Ken Shelton

Whatever happened to this guy? I recently came across an old tape from 1988 that was on WBCN's 20th anniversary and had Ken playing all of the "Lunch Songs." They were pretty damn funny. Was just wondering if Ken is still doing radio, and where he is nowadays? Also where did he go after WBCN?

After WBCN, he was on WZLX and then WBOS for a while. His last area on-air gig that I know of was at WROR about six years ago when they briefly tried switching from classic hits to a classic AOR format. They hired Ken as a voice that would recall Boston AOR radio in the '70s and '80s. The experiment was unfortunately a ratings failure, and after two declining books they went back to the classic hits format, and let Ken go.

That's too bad...is he still on air nowadays? How old is he now?

I think ken took a few years off to raise his kid(s?)...which is a noble thing to do.

Didn't Ken run some kind of online memorabilia company/site?

If he did...I could never find it online....

I still have vague recollections of listening to "Captain Ken" play "Owner of a Cuisinart"... and somewhere in a box I have an in-studio interview he did with Justin Hayward and John Lodge of Moody Blues fame back in '91. Definitely one of the Boston AOR greats. Sadly his time has come and gone.

Those "Mighty Lunch Hour Songs" were awesome !! So many of them.. "No Burgers, No Fries.. No Pizza, No Pies".. to Bob Marley's "No Women No Child".. "Electric BBQ" from "Electric Avenue".. The ones that paradied "Do Wah Diddy", "Papa Was a Rolling Stone", and "Silly Lunch Songs" from McCartney's "Silly Love Songs".. I think Peter Wolf did up a couple to his own stuff.. Captain Ken was awesome on the air in his BCN days !!

I have that same BCN 20th somewhere in the piles..

Like I said, I have it as well. I had it on cassette and have since dubbed it to my computer as an mp3 file. I have made a few cd's for some friends who wanted to hear it as well. Is there a way I could upload it to here for you guys? I'd do that if you want...it's great, gotta love the Lunch Songs!

I felt so lucky to grow up with a station like BCN around in the mid 70's and into the mid 80's until I left the Boston area.. Probably a large reason I got into radio in the first place.. Was lucky to have jobs at the time that kept me around a radio to keep it locked into BCN.. Shelton has one of the smoothest voices around, and his midday show was tops beginning with "Mishegus" with Charles.. Remember "Rock Trivia" they used to do ? Didn;t Shelton get in trouble a few times for some 'questionable' remarks.. ?? Nothing like that could even be duplicated today..

Jo Jo Kracko is GREAT name. He was at war with Bella Oxmix, as in, "I'd advise you to keep dialin' Oxmix." :) Second Season?

I don't think you can upload them here, but there are sites that will "host" it for you. I can't remember all of them, but even one of the free web spaces should do the trick!

Hope you can find somewhere, I'd love to hear them!

Go Bridgewater!!!!!

I honored to get such a complement by the coolest voice man around, Jim Cutler !! Plus I have the Vic Tayback look going, so it works.. Great episode, and one very cool name !! Thank you !

Time Traveler, those of us who admit to listening to Clark and Captain Ken in the 1970s are definitely dating ourselves.

Sad but true....BTW Clark and Captain Ken were also the original DJs on WCOZ. Clark ended up at WEEI-FM a couple
of years later and Ken joined him there too in 1979, before jumping over to WBCN in 1980...

Clark is one of the new owners of WCAP Lowell, high above Caps Diner in scenic Downtown Lowell.

(former WLYN FM staffer "Jackson" is there, along with former Herald music critic Dean Johnson. Jack Baldwin must be the radio version of a cockroach.. after everything else is long dead he is still around)

Ken is just another in a long list of people who were once Gods in the market, who are now doing something else. Remember when Parenteau was blown out of BCN, some speculated it was age, but I suspect it was money. Bill Smith... Harvey Warfield, Charles Laquidara, insert the name of your favorite DJ here and wonder where they went to. Bill Silver had been around the market for a long time, worked at a number of stations, got blown out of Greater Media and last I heard was a financial adviser. David O'Leary was doing weekend nights at
BCN in the early 80's worked his way up the ladder, got blown out the door at WBOS. JoAnne Doody Professional career at WFNX, WHAV then flip to WXRV, then up to NH, then to BOS... GONE!
50 years old and on the beach after spending her whole career in radio. Jay Gordon of WODS was doing overnights, and his syndicated Elvis Only show.. gave up his air shift to go into the financial adviser business too.

Bradley J. Was riding the (new) wave at BCN last I heard him he was doing fill in on WBZ overnights.

The list goes on, people who were huge in the day, Video didn't kill the radio star, Wall Street did.
