KERA talk show

It's been months since the passing of the great Glenn Mitchell and 90.1 still hasn't come up with a replacement host for the noon to 2 slot.

Who would you suggest?

> Who would you suggest?

I'd suggest before they get a new local host, they fix their god awful phone hybrid. The thing pops and buzzes during almost every call. In fact when I gave them ca$h during the last pledge drive, I specified on the check "Please use towards the purchase of a new telos system". But so far, the problem continues.

That money probably went to the "Bill Young Hair Plug Fund"

My vote goes to former KRLD morning anchor Jack Hines. He used to do a Sunday morning talk show on KGO in San Francisco that would be a nice fit following Glenn's legacy.

There's no one locally who comes to mind.

But I have a plan. First, I would shorten the show from two hours to one. Glenn went many years with a one-hour show before expanding to two. The next talent should take baby steps.

Next, I would canvass the local universities for the prof whose classes everyone LOVES to take. The "cool" prof. I'd check SMU, TCU, U. of Dallas, UT-Arlington and North Texas.

Finally, I would see if Ron Chapman would be interested in doing the one-hour shift on Fridays (when he's in town). A Chapman free-for-all. Whatever he wants to do for one hour.

When the great Red Barber retired from baseball play-by-play, NPR tapped him as a contributor to Morning Edition. I think Chapman could carry on that tradition on the Dallas level.

Jack would be a perfect fit. He is very knowledgable. He especially knows his "blues and jazz"

Another good candidate might be Ed Busch, who was known for his off-beat and personality interviews. Ed still lives in the Dallas area.

Ed would be a good fit too, if he were willing to drive to Dallas from Cedar Creek every day for public radio money. Btw, I don't know if it's been mentioned here but Abby Goldstein is following Jeff Luchsinger out the door over there. She's moving to a public radio station in New England.

If Ed isn't interested, perhaps Freddie Mertz might be. After all, his last DFW stint went well, didn't it?

Or how about any of the fine staff from the legendary Cafe 990?

How about Charley Jones from TSN's Texas Overnight? He's very entertaining and smart.
