KEXP Buys KREV

You owe me one. (Not a big one, but having to listen to that hip-hop music for 90 minutes has blown my tinnitus into overdrive. I'll take an official KEXP-branded geoduck, if any are left over from the last SMDD* drive.)

Just finished a round trip from the Redwood City hills, through San Carlos east of 101, to Redwood Shores adjacent to the Bay, and then back via a different route. Your signal can now be received where I live, both in the car and on a classic FM tuner that's totally analog. (I'm listening to it right now, in mono. It's not a clean fuzz-free signal, but it is stable. In stereo it turns to trash. In the car it's now clean enough to track door-to-door, and HD does kick in fairly quickly and stay locked in most of the time. As soon as I got out of the hills, the signal was very solid, a big improvement.

If you want more granular specifics, PM me.

You are in our anticipated fringe area, so that is very encouraging. Thanks so much for the feedback! Regarding SMDD, we planned the launch for right *after* our spring drive so you won't hear that until the fall. (I will say that our drives can be silly/entertaining in their own right.) :) We have some of these, but understand if you want to hold out for a geoduck.

Actually, if you send a geoduck my way, we'd have to keep it as a pet. (Not kosher.)

The sticker (or is it a decal or a coaster? Not clear from your photo) looks cool. Seeing it reminds me of my involvement in the launch of a different 92.7, on a certain lengthy island off the other coast, back in an earlier century. Also of my last trip up to Seattle, which coincided with KEXP moving into your new studios by Seattle Center. Ahh, good times, great wrinkles.

Can someone post a screenshot of the HD on KREV (like off an HD radio receiver)? I'd like to add it to the HD Directory website & RadioLand mobile app. Thanks!

So, this has been a fun saga to follow, even though I've never been to Northern California or Seattle.

I found KEXP kind of by accident in 2022. I was looking at Wikipedia improvement projects that could be interesting for highly viewed US stations. KEXP was among them, and its history looked really interesting. So, while the Phoenix Suns melted down against the Dallas Mavericks, I got to work and radically redid that article. I also started streaming KEXP regularly and fundamentally enjoying what I was hearing (it's the first thing I go to when I'm exercising). It's the most I've listened to a radio station not in my car.

I was surprised when KEXP bought KREV and wound up deciding "well, if I've taken KEXP's Wikipedia article to Good Article status, I'm gonna need to do it to KREV." The 92.7 frequency has a bonkers history, even without the crazy clown show known as Ed Stolz, and my article on it rivals some of my best TV station work. (Some of the press about the KEXC launch definitely consulted that article...) Following this saga has been quite fun.

By the way, was listening at about 1:00 this afternoon, and the new "KEXP Seattle, KEXC Alameda–Oakland–San Francisco, broadcasting live from Seattle Center" TOH ID slipped out a little early... You're not gonna get Larry Mizell Jr. introducing an EAS test like it's a song, like I heard back in January...

Anonymous editor sure was quick, hmm.

Tuned in for a minute just now, they’re playing ambient music with overlayed radio tuning sounds, the soundtrack to an educational piece about radio oscillators, and then a bumper for “KSFO Five-Six-Oh in San Francisco and Just For You”, a vintage one. I’ll get a proper recording when I get back from college.

"Why don't you focus on expanding the radio signal in the Puget Sound area?
We’re trying to! We have been and continue to explore ways to boost or augment our signal strength in the Puget Sound area, including the purchase or transfer of broadcast signals - but ours is a very expensive and highly constrained market. There is a new broadcast technology we’re looking into that would help us come in a bit stronger in areas that are on the outskirts of our current coverage area - hopefully we'll be able to provide a positive update on that soon. We’ll keep working on this as we expand to the Bay Area."

Interesting note, perhaps maxxcasting?

So will KXEC be a simulcast of KEXP?

They announced the plan in November:

When the Bay Area station begins broadcasting in the coming months, we’ll be airing more or less the same programming on 92.7 FM San Francisco as you’ll hear on the radio at 90.3 FM Seattle. But within the first six months of operation, we’ll also launch a Bay Area local music show that will air regionally (similar to Audioasis in Seattle). We’ll also be doing our best to build relationships and connections with the local music scene that will help us define the evolution of the Bay Area station.

Then updated:

We will launch an all Bay Area music show to air Saturdays 6-9PM Pacific in Summer 2024. We’ll also be seeking out and building new relationships with members of the cultural, business, nonprofit, and music communities in the area.
