KEXP is #1 per CMJ Magazine

Re: KEXP is #1 per CMJ Magazine

#1 in trade magazines. #23 in the ratings.

Re: KEXP is #1 per CMJ Magazine

Still think they deserve some prop's ... not many non-comm (and licensed as "Education") stations that make the kind of national splash that KNHC and KEXP have. Usually these things are just a living lab for those who are learning a little thing or two about broadcasting -- and MAYBE the signal gets to their house so mom & dad can catch the kid "on the air". Even if stations like these aren't knocking the world out cold with their commercial ratings ... the fact that these folks can make something out of what is hardly a "level" playing field is pretty impressive. If the people running these stations can do it with the resources they have ... imagine what happens when you hire them and they have a REAL audience and marketing opportunity/budget to work with!

Re: KEXP is #1 per CMJ Magazine

But they're not college kids learning radio to take with them into radio careers. The core staff of KEXP is a group of well paid adult professionals hiding within the confines of a false radio economy provided by Paul Allen. KEXP is a good station able to expand their influence beyond the college campus via the internet. God bless 'em. But don't believe the hype about what a powerhouse they are. They are a good station with a small audience.

Re: KEXP is #1 per CMJ Magazine

You are wrong. KEXP received a ONE TIME grant spread over three years. Those dollars are long gone. Their budget and operations are now supposedly self sufficient - achieved, like KUOW's, through pledge drives and underwriting. I congratulate them on some terrific accomplishments and exciting radio over the last few years. They are a very interesting component to the Seattle/Tacoma market.

I'm not wrong. They were launched with a cash safety net that enabled them to pay professionals to program and market their radio station for years. That funding has been phased out but its effect remains. And, their ability to sustain and grow without Paul Allen's money remains to be seen. They are a good station. I don't deny that. But they are not your typical stuggling college station. And, their impact doesn't reach much beyond the insular indie scene.

Both stations rely heavily upon out-of-market revenue (donations from out of Seattle). KEXP is a little more savvy with the technology, but that's primarily to boost revenue streams.

KEXP provides zero educational value for people wanting to get into radio. The people there already get paid, and I would wager that some of them couldn't, or didn't, cut it in commercial radio. KEXP also goes thru the same kind of distrust and mismanagement that commercial radio stations do, but its apparently all okay since it's not owned by Clear Channel and they play music that very few people want to hear.

KNHC is an enormous educational benefit for kids who want to get into radio. They too try to position themselves as "worldwide" via the internet. If I had $100 to give to either KEXP or KNHC, it definitely would go to the latter. Because I know there would be a bigger benefit to radio overall for KNHC to keep on going. Whereas, KEXP goes to line pockets of individual people.

Re: KEXP is #1 per CMJ Magazine

Amen, AQR. Our taxpayer-funded University of Washington, licensee of KEXP, has been hyjacked by a group of professionals running KEXP, nothing more, nothing less. I think they have a lot of explaining to do to the ASUW. The origins of KEXP are the 10-watt KCMU, run by the Associated Students of University of Washington. You can still see the old tower on top of McMahon Hall.

I say, give back the airwaves to the students at UW and make it a campus station.

Still remember the ID they had mid-70's ... "broadcasting with a full 10 watts from 12 floors above the laundry at McMahon hall..."

Speaking of old towers, I understand Entercom sold the Roosevelt bldg where KISW was housed for many years (LOONNNGG before it became a rock station). One person actually died there one weekend while doing his classical music show. Haven't done a drive-by to see if bldg has been taken down or not.

Are there any non-coms that are not supported by a school?

The only one I know is KSER in Everett. Not a big signal, though. Not many independant non-coms out there.
