KFCD 990 AM

Well, people it looks like our good friends @ KFCD 990 AM have once AGAIN changed formats. I was changing stations through the AM dial the other day & I noticed that 990 AM went back to a Spanish Protestant Christian format from the Gospel format. I don't know what they're up to at that station but it looks like they're flip flopping @ 990 AM every 2-3 months. If they're having that many problems with those formats might as well try something new or go back to the Sports Fan format they had a year ago or try Tejano for a change. At this time Tejano is not on a single station broadcasting on the regular dial unless you have a HD Radio you could tune in to 107.9-2 FM. Whoever owns KFCD 990 Am should consider such a change or just sell the station to someone who could really do something with this station. My friends Gospel & Spanish Protestant radio have not worked on this station & it's about time the head honchos @ 990 AM do something different for a change & Tejano or a '50s Oldies format on 990 would really work.

I'm betting this is controlled by some investment company still, and they're merely leasing out the time...so the format is dictated by the highest bidder. When the money runs out, they just go to the next sucker on the list.

Mr. Shannon, you are correct, sir.

The station is pay-for-play. When SportsFan went off the air, it was so churches could pay them to play gospel. I'm sure they'll keep doing the same thing over and over and over.

A bit sad, really. This was the heritage top-40 station for Wichita Falls back in the late 60's. It even put a decent signal into Midland, TX.

Unfortunately, I knew someone who worked there when it was SportsFan 990. They weren't paying anyone's salary. That's why whoever owns the station is doing a good job running it to the ground. It's a shame. it would have been a really good AM station for the Collin County region, perhaps for local Collin County news and sports. It definitely would have been excellent to keep the Roughriders on that frequency. I could barely hear the games on KKGM 1630AM.

Please pay attention, the company that owns the station is out of Buffalo, they lease it to people locally to put on their programming, Like Gospel, or the Joke SportsFan990 which was run by that idiot Tom bailey (who is the guy who didn't pay anyone), the station is a used car, they rent it to someone until they miss a payment then rent it to someone else.... They don't care if anyone ever listens, or if it gets ratings, they make $60,000 a month on the lease and that is all they care about. Until they sell it to someone who cares it will be a new format every 3 to 6 months.

Used to be, the FCC would require a station to serve the "public interest, convenience, and necessity." I guess a new form of Gospel music in a different language every three months is serving the public.

God forbid that holding company would ever have to generate a rating point. They knew full well Bailey wasn't paying anyone and was threatening clients. They were told straight to their face over and over. They didn't do a thing till they realized Bailey would never pay them back what he owed.

Now, they're taking money from churches with a straight face.

Why would they care if bailey was paying anyone? There only interest is the rent money... Just like the apartment manager doesn't care if you pay your bills, as long as they get rent. Besides anyone dumb enough to work for bailey deserved the lesson.

Nahhhh...I wouldn't go that far. Thom Bailey could apparently talk a great line of BS, and that "passion" (consisting of fake animated movements and yelling and being borderline nuts) could actually fool one into thinking he's legit and just inches away from being a huge success. Also his lies about "big plans" and "expansion" and all that...The only reason I take some exception here is even some smart folks got taken in by this guy, thinking he was a real entrepreneur ready to set DFW radio on its ear. It's about the same as the people who got taken in by Dave Schum and Cafe 990 (6 years ago this very week.) I wouldn't call any of them dumb, but perhaps guilty of believing in someone and having faith (people probably thought Bill Gates was nuts at one time, too, early on.) A buddy of mine came very close to being sucked in by the Thom deal, and this guy's been in radio sales forever, and knows how to spot a con and a scam...but Thom apparently had a pretty good "game" in place.

Their only interest is rent money? What about keeping their license?

In the old days, you couldn't just rent your station out and bury your head in the sand. Plus, if you rented your station out and knew full well for months that your renter wasn't paying salaries or anything else, you were the license holder and you couldn't just point at your lease and say, "Not our fault. We only voluntarily turned our air signal over for money so anything they do isn't binding on us."

Forget 990. Any of the pay-for-play pantheon locally shouldn't be able to get away with that.

it's not the licensee's responsibility if the person who leases the facility 24/7 doesnt pay the salaries of staff, as the licensee didn't hire them.. and most TBA/LMA contracts state the person leasing the station is responsible for all bills, maintence, upkeep, etc.

You're right. How silly of me. A license holder has absolutely no responsibility whatsoever to insure that whomever they're leasing their signal to does so legally and professionally.

Excellent mindset. So, they can lease the signal and let the renter overmodulate. Or use profanity. Or be heavily partisan during an election cycle. Charge one party double what you charge the other.

Then, when the FCC comes a-callin', they get to just point at the renter and show an invoice and say, "Well, it was them. We rented it to them. So we aren't responsible."

And people wonder why this business is in the dumper.

They are ultimately responsible for the fine, but I guarentee the LMA in place provides for the licensee to go after the program producer to pay back the fine.

Don't mind letterman, he is still mad that he took the bait and was part of the joke that was 990... You only have two peole to be mad at, Tom bailey, and the man in the mirror. At least you have your Letterman scholarship to fall back on.... Being mad at the people who rented the station won't make you feel better. :'(

Wow. Not only is being critical of everything without offering any of your own credentials one of your superpowers, you have apparently added mindreading.

Mad? Can you also sense emotions from random names in the phone book?

Finding fault with an industry that bestows licenses on people who rent them without repercussion to inept operators is merely expecting a higher standard from the industry. Nothing more, nothing less. If you'd like to begin mindreading, try mindreading my experience as the Editorial Director of the Cartoon Network--which is slightly higher than local market radio. And, with standards that reflect the size, success, and accomplishments associated with a higher standard.

I'll let you get back to bellyaching about everything else.

SportsFan 990 to the Cartoon Network, yeah, that sounds about right.

According to current FCC rules both of those actions are perfectly legal.
Exception: political spots must be made equally available at the "lowest unit rate".
A station can charge what it wishes and the Fairness Doctrine was abolished many years ago.

But that doesnt apply to every election or race.. I think it just applies to State and Federal.. IE: Governor, President and Senate/House.. not like mayor or anything.. nor does the Equal Time come into play.

Yes, charging double what you charge the other party is illegal. Can some of you even read? You even claim it yourself. LOWEST UNIT RATE. You're making my point for me.

Secondly, being heavily partisan (i.e., yelling "Sieg Heil" into bullhorns at a polling location when a political candidate shows up to vote at his precinct) will get your station fined and sanctioned. It's happened.

I don't wonder about why radio is dying as an industry--or even how to save it any more. The problem is so clear it isn't even funny.

IT IS THE QUALITY AND CHARACTER OF THE PEOPLE IN RADIO.

Even in this thread, a spectacular display of mediocrity maintenance has been put on display for all. I'm suggesting a world where a broadcast license means you have some sort of obligation to make sure whatever or whomever is operating the station is doing so with high standards. In a way that formats don't change every three seconds because the stations weren't financially viable to begin with--TO ANYONE BUT THE CORPORATE HOLDER--which the bottom feeder mentalities on this board seem to think gets to do whatever they want and just point a finger when things go south.

Amazing.

The last thing on the minds of 99% of people in radio is broadcasting. If broadcasters ever get the reins back to the stations, maybe things will improve. But that's not going to happen with all the toadies currently in place.

And, who apparently think a broadcast license is a license to not serve the public one tiny bit.

Par usual, you got it backwards.

It would be nice if you could put your omniscience to work resurrecting the industry. After you're done changing water into wine and walking across that lake.
