KFI finally!

Thanks! I would even run it by other Michigan and even W. Ontario DX'ers to try for KFI right now. 640 is a very crowded frequency along the East Coast, so anywhere east of Akron and Toronto you probably wouldn't have much of a chance with it. It was even difficult for me to confirm them.

I read that kilokat (from West Michigan-- i'm in the South Central part of the state) logged them and thought i'd wake up early just one morning and try for them. Got them on the first try! I think I may try to make this a pattern and get other rare AM stations from the west.

KNBR is next on my list. WSCR I-BLOC will make this one difficult, but the 680 frequency is very similar to 640 where it's jammed along the East Coast, but really opens up once you get to the Midwest, with only two or three stations between here and SF/LA. I think I can get it.

I used to get KFI very well here just north of Chicago, but now with WMFN it's very tough. Best chance for me is KNX which often peaks around 7AM CDT later in October.

Really? When I visited friends the suburbs southwest of Ft. Worth several years ago, KFI was owned by spanish-language (probably Mexican) stations.

The "big" signal is the Hidalgo del Parral, Chih. station which can be heard early evenings witin 100 miles of KFI to the east of LA.

I was wondering about that, David. Interestingly I don't recall hearing Spanish under KFI in El Cajon, but then I haven't listened to KFI much at night. What's the Spanish language station I hear under KNX sometimes?

How interesting you mention that!

When I listen to 640 here in Tampa hoping to hear KFI, when I null out the annoying Cuban station as best as possible, there's another mystery Spanish station coming from either the WNW or ESE.

I was wondering if maybe it was another Cuban station from the eastern part of the country but now that you mention this Mexican station, could that be what I'm hearing?

So I listened for an hour last night and for a short time I heard what sounded like a news or talk station coming from the WNW but it was so faint in the background of the other stations to make much of.

What is also kind of interesting is that I can hear KKOB clearly in LA with no difficulty at night (as well as KTNN - 660) I cannot get any of the LA stations (e.g. KFI, KNX) in Albuquerque at night. Not somebody else on the frequency. Just nothing.

That's very odd because I had no difficulty in picking up KFI and KNX from the Santa Fe area at night. Both came in pretty well. KNBR also came in, though not quite as well. Even heard XETRA 690, though it was faint; 1090 from TJ was better.

So far, I've pulled in KNX from the NW suburbs of Chicago (a couple of times last winter) - but no KFI yet. The farthest east I have picked up KFI so far has been from Nebraska.

Lawppy - congrats on catching KFI from Michigan too!

I thought I had KNBR this morning, but I'm not positive. What I think I heard was something to the effect of "K-N-B-R News" which went directly into FOX News at the top of the hour. Anyone know if they run FOX News at the top of the hour during late nights/early mornings? My source doesn't show any FOX News affiliates on 680.

The KNBR website says they run ESPN from midnight to 5am, which would be 3am-8am here. I have been hearing ESPN on 680 during these times, but it's coming out of Memphis. I'll keep trying this week...
Nope... It wasn't KNBR, KNBR hasn't done news since the late 80's, and Fox News Radio is on 910 KNEW in SF, Keep Trying!

A year ago on LD Weekend-I stayed at a ,otel just outside Richmond IN (right near the OH) border) off I-75. With my old Bose Wave I caught KFI right at local sunrise. Solid ID. Got lots of 5 kw stations from 400-500 mi. as well.
Blind luck or the early bird gets ... ....
I didn't get KFI in eastern IA the early AM before(400 mi further West) so I'm leaning to the former.

Is it true that before sunrise is a better time for propagation in general than after sunset or is it the same?

I obviously realize you can't look for KFI right after sunset in the east or midwest but I think you get the point.

Or if sunrise and sunset are great windows of opportunity, would a good time to try for KFI from the east be just after sunset in the west?

It depends on what direction you're trying to DX from. For example when I was in England years ago I tried to DX the US. I found my best chance was right before sunrise in the UK. Reason being that at that time most of the powerful Eastern European stations were then in daylight and I had a clear shot across the dark Atlantic. The opposite was true when trying to DX from the east when I was in Hawaii.
You also have to be aware of the other stations which may be on the frequency you're trying to DX and what their day night power/patterns are.

I believe that I was hearing KFI earlier this morning, around 3:30-4:30 a.m. CT. I was hearing Coast to Coast a.m., which I know is on a number of 640's, but when it came for id'ing, I could barely hear the announcer say KFI, but "more stimulating talk" (their current slogan, which I believe no other N/T station on 640 is currently using for a slogan) was loud and clear! And of course, on CTCAM, I had no trouble listening to the show. But when it came time for the ID, well, I hate you "Murphy" I had the mp3 recorder going, but to no avail! Sounded like WOI and WMFN were in the mix, and a few others, and WMFN (Grand Rapids, MI) was starting to get stronger around 4:30 a.m. CT. By the way, within this past week I heard WCRV from Memphis just before they powered down around 4:30 p.m. Might want to check 640 more often... I'm in NE Illinois.

Lately I've been noticing WCRV wiping out the usual signal from WWLS Moore/Oklahoma City here in East Texas for a good portion of the day.

Nice.

In SW Ohio, 640 is a target rich environment mostly at sunrise and sunset...but not when it comes to KFI.

Do you get Akron there?

I have been listening for KFI from here in Vermilion, OH but so far it's been a jumble of WHLO/Akron, OH, WWJZ/Mt. Holly, NJ (Radio Disney), Cuba, and other mush. I thought I might stand a chance on hearing KFI since KOA 850 from Denver has been coming in pretty well at night over WKNR and others from here.
