KFNN SIGNAL IMPLICATIONS FOR PROGRAMMING DECISIONS

This class D station (1510kHz) w/ only 100W at night yet 22.5kW day faces major issues with programming decisions during Critical hours and overnight. It is unfortunate to have Clark Howard and Bruce Williams relegated to the overnights at 100W. And, Moe Ansari's 5pm-6pm Marketwrap over the FCC sunset.

Many programs have issues during critical hours - and even during midday in the fringe areas - that of course encompasses a longer period of time in winter. Weekends with Bob Brinker can be problematic with a music station interfering, even in the 2pm hour.

Perhaps w/ the downgrading of Spokane, the station could consider and upgrade to 50kW directional day, 35kW critical hours, and perhaps 1000 watts at night, all with a new 6 or 8 directional array closer to downtown, instead of the 4 towers near the Sonoran Desert Preserve well north of town and even north of the 101.

The old KFNN tower site could be sold to 1100 KFNX, another problem as their towers are along Carefree Highway near Cave Creek, 30 miles north of Tempe and Phoenix. Since KFNX is also class D, there is no need to cover the entire city of license (Cave Creek) with 5mV/m at night. I don't know if the KFNN site would cover Cave Creek at night at 1100kHz.

Thoughts?

This station is a prime candidate for an FM translator. Its 100 watts of nightime power is all but useless.

You want to supply the land? Lotsa luck finding available land inside the city to put radio towers. ::)

KFNX is a class B station, 50 kW days, 1 kW nights. It has to cover Cave Creek at night, as well as protect Grand Junction CO at the same time.

Yes true, VERY TRUE! Subleasing on South Mtn. or Tempe Butte is a very expensive option. But all they have to do with the Translator is cover Mesa. Still a real expensive option. Then it's the 4 years to develop an opening in the FM band in the already short-spaced Phoenix FM spectrum.

And just who listens to financial news after 5pm? Nurse Jeff and I'd rather see Lumberyard 14~Forty get one of those translators so we can listen to worn out oldies on a marginal FM frequency ;D But as Media Hut Professor The Beave sez...good luck shoe horning more frequencies into the crowded Phoenix FM band.

Moe Ansari is exceptional talent - passionate, informative, even though he is a salesman. Moe has the best Infomercial of any talk host I know of.

Bruce Williams is a gem in the industry, and I would have given Bruce the #1 talkers award instead of to Art Bell.

A translator is a good idea. Or, even in AM booster like in Santa Fe for KOB somewhere well away from the nightime towers. The business station in Seattle is working on an AM translator 50 miles north of the tower site.
