KFOG Flips To KNBR Simulcast

Earlier in this thread, someone joked about the folks at KSAN being on watch. Is The Bone strong in its current form?

Would Cumulus reap any rewards long-term from putting 560 or more likely 810 on 107.7 or are those talkers are already a total lost cause?

WMAL in DC was still a strong station which Cumulus moved to FM because the AM signal was downgraded. DC is a more receptive market to news and talk, too.

KGO and KSFO are basically dead. Moving to FM would be like switching coffins on a cadaver.

KQED-FM and KCBS all news at this point has prevented KGO and KSFO from heading to FM given that KQED-FM is the top rated News/talk station in San Francisco and KCBS Radio is In a battle with KQED for listeners.

You don't move into a more expensive home unless you can pay for it.

KGO died a decade ago, and had been on a decline for most of the preceding 8 or 9 years. KSFO was an overflow station for KGO when Luckoff and Swanson were there. Also long ago.

There is nothing to move. No audience, no content that appeals to under-55 sales demos.

Not to mention that San Francisco isn't a strong market for conservative talk.

For those who can't get enuf classic '90s alt, KFOG appears to have stopped playing currents for their final week -- it's all classics from the '90s.

Are we going to see any “goodbye” celebrations on KFOG? I have heard the jocks and absolutely zero mention of the format flip at all from them. Typical quick voicetracks with station promotions.

If the flip was a secret, I could see pulling the plug and going right to KNBR. Otherwise, with a station with as much heritage as they have, ought to at least do something interesting on the last day. Even if they don’t do a retrospective with DJs like WPLJ, it would be a shame if they didn’t acknowledge their heyday.

Maybe a best-of KFOG circa 1982? Last song is the first song they played way back when?

Some of us would argue that they have spent the last 3 years trashing their "heritage" :)

I suspect they will go away quietly. It's not clear whether the flip happens Thurs nite at midnite or Fri morning at 6.

Yep. They put so much effort into trashing their heritage, that now they can actually announce ahead of time that it's flipping and nobody cares.

Not exactly...people are still pissed because they held out hope the station would go back to the ancient past. Even though they don't listen.

Where are you getting this from?

How about this:

Nope, nothing in that quote screams "pissed" at all. As far as whether the author "held out hope the station would go back to the ancient past," it's more in the way of a goodbye acknowledgement rather than wanting it to flip back to the old KFOG.

What do you expect? The summer of love ended a long time ago.

That’s precisely what I’d like to see. No crazy 2 weeks of ‘retro KFOG’. Maybe the jocks acknowledging the end of the format (which is information that was given from the GM). Maybe a nice little farewell set or two for the last hour. Like I said, if the information was mere rumor/speculation, I could see blowing up a heritage format with no farewell. Otherwise, it seems a bit of a waste. What do you have to lose?

Hey, almost exactly 37 years ago (September 16, 1982), all the previous audience got was a commercial every hour for a few days suggesting they change the dial to KOIT. Roger Whittaker's "The Last Farewell" got played as just another song in a beautiful music set, they ran a "tell your friends you listen to KFOG" promo, an Oakland A's commercial, a beautiful music-format newscast, a legal ID and then the Stray Cats' "Rock This Town". They had a 2.7 the previous book---which means there was probably more of an audience with some feeling for the format that was ending than there is now.
