KFOX at 102.1

From South San Francisco to Millbrae, I am surprised the reception is not up to par. It comes in and out as staticy and distance.

I'm surprised nobody brought this up before. At least in my experience, the clarity of the reception on 102.1 has never been great. One of the frustrations of listening to soft classical pieces on the station (I believe the high-brow term is "pianissimo") is that the static was often the loudest thing you could hear.

If anything, loud classic rock music should have less of a problem. But even with dual signals, K-Fox will not be the most listenable classic rock station in the Bay Area. So predictions of 103.7-The Band's imminent demise due to competition from KFOG and KFOX may be premature.

Reception of 102.1 in that area has ALWAYS been bad. It is the same issue with KFRC 106.9. Both of the transmitters are located on Mt. Beacon. SF shadows the signal on that part of the Peninsula. The same type of issue exists for folks in the shadow of anything on Sutro Tower. Ever try to get Sutro Radio or Television anywhere just immediately south of San Bruno Mt or on the coastal areas of San Mateo county ?

I live in San Francisco. At my house, and driving in my car in the city, the 106.9 signal is clearer and less staticky than 102.1.

The sound quality of 98.5 is far better than 102.1 even in areas where both signals are strong.

Which brings up the question - why would a company take a station that is number 7 in the ratings and change it to a format that is buried down the list.

Too many rock stations competing for the same audience.

This will not end well.

That's the difference between 80 Kw (106.9) and 33 kw (102.1).

It's all about national revenue; getting additional average rating points with two signals (just ask KFOG and KCBS) mean millions more in national revenue.

It's the same issue in the Tri-Valley area; 102.1 and 106.9 are dogs. Oddly, 97.3 and 98.1 are both fine here; granted 98.1 has a booster in Pleasanton on The Ridge; though 90% of the time, boosters trash a signal more than help it.

Again, why didn't KRXQ get 102.1??

KUFX sucks
They put K-Fox on because K-Fox can at least call itself a Bay Area Station. 98Rock is in Sacramento, a Completely different market. If Entercom wanted to give The Bay an Active Rocker they'd make a new station, not simulcast one from outside of the market

This is so frustrating and I am so done with terrestrial radio. I want them to leave the AM/FM tuner out of the music system in the next car I buy. With the loss of classical KDFC (yes, in the South Bay it is a loss ... Weak signal DXing, Driving, and Classical are a bad mix) choice is further diminished and the sound of the dial is another step toward bland, boring sameness. There is little choice left unless you happen to dabble in the different shades of Hip Hop, Classic Rock, Spanish Language or talk radio. Satellite radio and Internet/Pandora feeds are definitely the rising stars in my listening future. I hope the rating points counters are listening to the door closing. And I am taking my "revenue" with me.

Wow!! I tuned in 102.1 for the 1st time today and the 1st thing I heard was ugly sibilance distortion. 98.5 is fine, but it sounds like they have the pre-emphasis turned on twice or something on 102.1. Strange.

They couldn't try and buy the KSFX call letters? they would be better than the KUZX call letters. But what dose it matter because call letters don't mean anything in PPM world.

Speaking of 102.1 signal. Didn't they tried to move their signal from Mt. Beacon in Sausalito (North of the Gold Gate Bridge) to San Bruno Mtn awhile back?
