KFOX at 102.1

Bonneville looked at moving KDFC to Beacon back when they took over the station, but decided there wasn't any advantage to the move. They would lose significant coverage over the rich Marin County area, and there was a co-channel station in King City that meant they would lose their grandfathered coverage towards San Jose.

But I just checked the FCC database and that allocation is currently listed as vacant, so who knows?

I thought they changed that so a "Super B" could move without losing grandfathered status. They just can't increase coverage.

True, as long as the interfering contour doesn't bump up against another station. For co-channel that's the 40 dbu to the Class A's 60 dbu. If it does, you have to reduce power in that direction until it fits. That puts the null pretty much directly over San Jose.

It's not a linear relationship since the 40 extends a much greater distance than the Class B's normal coverage limit of 57 dbu.

The audio seemed a bit thin at the launch of the sign on. Almost if they had not made any adjustments to the airchain feeding 102.1. Also notice a 1.5 second delay between the audio feeding the two sites. 102.1 is trailing. I assume that is due to the HD compensation assuming 98.5 is non-HD???

The sound quality of 98.5 is far better than 102.1 even in areas where both signals are strong.

Wow!! I tuned in 102.1 for the 1st time today and the 1st thing I heard was ugly sibilance distortion. 98.5 is fine, but it sounds like they have the pre-emphasis turned on twice or something on 102.1. Strange.

HD delay is in the range of 6-7 seconds. More likely a 1.5 second delay is the latency of the link between the San Jose studios and S.F.

They couldn't try and buy the KSFX call letters? they would be better than the KUZX call letters. But what dose it matter because call letters don't mean anything in PPM world.

Those call letters KSFX belong to 100.5 Roswell New Mexico, 100 The Fox Greatest Classic Hits.

Reception of 102.1 in that area has ALWAYS been bad. It is the same issue with KFRC 106.9. Both of the transmitters are located on Mt. Beacon. SF shadows the signal on that part of the Peninsula. The same type of issue exists for folks in the shadow of anything on Sutro Tower. Ever try to get Sutro Radio or Television anywhere just immediately south of San Bruno Mt or on the coastal areas of San Mateo county ?

I noticed that KFRC/KCBS 106.9 is much beter.
