KFOX PD Garner Goin Exits

All Access is reporting that Entercom owned Classic Rock simulcast duo 98.5 and 102.1 KFOX Program Director GARNER GOIN has left the building. Look for sister AC KOIT (96.5) PD ANDY HOLT to add PD duties for KUFX.

The first K-FOX PD Entercom hired, Larry Sharp, lasted less than a year. Now Garner gets the boot just under 1 year. Greg Kihn and Tim Jeffreys were also fired last year. Doesn't sound like Entercom knows how to do classic rock.

Firing Larry Sharp was a colossal blunder so canning his replacement seems par for the Entercom course. Let's see, The Game can't exceed a one share, KOIT's ratings have be never been lower except for Christmas, KBLX has changed into an entirely different station with bad ratings. Entercom is the laughing stock of the market
In the words of Casey Stengel, "Doesn't anyone here know how to play this game?"

Seems to me the last thing Entercom did right in this market was to flip KITS to "Modern Rock"... back in 1987.

But Entercom was very different back then, just a tax shelter for some Philly lawyers.

Entercom does something right once a year...when they transform KOIT into the all-Christmas station.

(OK, it wasn't their idea originally, but at least they've kept a winning tradition alive.)

Aside from that, Entercom's legacy is a succession of wimpy band-aids on serious problems with varying degrees of success. And a lot of human casualties along the way. Good luck to the current group of Entercommers SF - may they be the ones to rise above.

Oh, I dunno, when they owned KITS 105.3 they did nicely. I used to listen to that station all the time. They introduced me to modern rock.

Does this mean no more of the new sound of KFOX? I think the simulcast has failed, they should really move the game to 102.1 and put something new on 95.7.

Goin's format "tweak" 6 months ago was intended to position them "younger" and a bit more female-leaning than The Bone, but it doesn't seem to have done anything. Musically, they're still your typical boring repetitive Classic Rocker; only now in addition to "Sweet Emotion" 27 times a week we get the same Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers songs in heavy rotation. I love Annalisa and listen to her when I wake up but boy are her talents wasted there.

I see Entercom hired another Fox Program Director (Classic Rock) competing with Entercom in another market. Garner Goin was from Clear Channel, Denver at The Fox competing with Entercom's The Mountain and now Chris Hoffman from Cumulus, Kansas City from their Fox competing with Entercom's The Rock will be Program Director at KUFX. Interesting, The Fox was owned by Susquehanna before Cumulus which is where KUFX General Manager, Dwight Walker worked before going to Entercom. He managed KFOG and The Bone for Susquehanna.

Yes he is. An earlier post stated he was adding PD duties to KFOX as well as KOIT.

All Access is now reporting that CHRIS HOFFMAN has been named the new PD at KFOX, effective FEBRUARY 18th. HOFFMAN is a 25-year radio veteran currently serving as the OM for CUMULUS’ seven-station cluster in KANSAS CITY. He has also been the PD of Classic Rock KCFX (101 The Fox) and the KANSAS CITY CHIEFS RADIO NETWORK for the past nine years, where he also hosts the midday show on KCFX.

I see Hoffman also was program director ofthe Kansas City Chiefs Radio Network. Maybe he will also take over The Game so they can fire that PD. as for Andy Holt, Entercom lovers him for all his years in New Orleans before, during and after Katrina. Apparently he gets a pass despite the KOIT decline under his regime.

You're assuming Dwight Walker knows what he's doing when it comes to programming. He doesn't.

Makes perfect sense if you're a bean counter

Program Director from a Fox Classic Rock station...check
Program Director competing against Entercom in another market...check
Program Director from former company, Susquehanna...check
Program Director with sports background, K-FOX is the anchor station for the Sharks...check

Ops manager in KC for seven stations, moves to SF to program a station-and-a-half that's infamous for turnover...hmmmm. Must've been promised something down the line.

Will the other shoe drop once this Hoffman guy gets to town?

Granted I'm a casual listener to K-Fox, but it seems the new guy is scaling back a bit on the '90s stuff they added in October. It seemed like there were 2 '90s cuts an hour recently (the usual suspects: Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Green Day, Lenny Kravitz). In 8 hours this morning there were maybe 4 or 5 total. A smart move, it seems to me, since The Bone has been adding '90s stuff that seems out of place there (like Beck's "Devil's Haircut"). I realize everybody wants "younger" but keeping older demos to get a higher cume might be a good tradeoff for K-Fox.
