KFRC Gets New Consultant

Because of bad ratings KFRC hired Terry Patrick to help the ailing station. You'll hear changes soon! If not already! It will be interesting how they try to turn this around!

Infinity also gave Keith Abrams oversight on programming for 11 of their Oldies stations this past week. Does anybody know if he'll be working with KFRC as well?

> You'll hear changes soon! If not already!

I listen regularly, albeit sporadically, and I haven't heard anything different over the past several days.

I think that not having KFRC-AM attached to the station is partly to blame for the ratings drop. Last Summer, the combined AM and FM had a rating that was (how do you say this on Radio-Info.com without saying what the number actually was?) exactly between a 3.0 and a 5.0, and that had to include a lot of baseball listeners who had their AM radios tuned in the next morning and just kept it there.

Now, if I listen to an A's game in the evening while driving around, and the next morning I start the car and still have it tuned to 610 and hear "Family Radio," I can't hit the off switch fast enough.

Infinity should seriously consider switching KYCY/1550 to a KFRC-FM simulcast. It's funny that they didn't hire a consultant to work on "KYOU Radio" because of its "bad ratings" -- I noticed that there was no rating listed in the Arbs for the leading podcasting station in the nation.

Oh! Great another consultant playing his favorite music for a fee!!!!

And what is so great about Terry Patrick????????? Hey guys! It's really simple
"Play the Hits" and keep the beat and tempo rolling. And not with the same 250 records. This guy will most likely spell the end of KFRC-99.7 as an Oldies
station much like WCBS was ruined also. Can Jack be far behind? I say no he is right around the corner no matter what MAX does!!!! The station is ailing
because they blew out the real KFRC to that insipid family guys crap! Infinity is finally finding out just how many people really listened to the "Big 610" which was a lot more than they ever thought! "All things must pass even radio stations." Oh! By the way, Life goes on get over it!

Wasn't Patrick the guy that was brought in and screwed up Big 98.1 before it was blown up and became Kiss?

I just tried googling "Terry Patrick" and didn't come up with much.

He's based in Seattle and was involved in the December 2004 switch of KYWL/Spokane from CHR to (quoting Radio & Records) "the ever-popular 'anything' format as 'Bob.'"

Apparently, he was one of the first consultants involved in auditorium music testing back in the early Eighties:

"I still remember that test very clearly. Terry Patrick, now a successful programming consultant on his own, worked for The Research Group then, and was the moderator of the test. And what a test that was! Listening to about 300 hooks from groups like "101 Strings" and "The Henry Mancini Orchestra"…kind of like being nibbled to death by ducks!" (http://www.rogerwimmer.com/researchdr/music1.htm)

There are also quotes by him on the TM Century website extolling the virtues of their all-Christmas programming sevice.

The changes have happened!

As I said below, KFRC took away pre-Beatles oldies. I think they took away the call-in requests in the evenings and I haven't heard that Beatles montage song that seemed to be played every night up until a few days ago.

The Death of KFRC 99.7 is just over the hill and around the bend!

Gawd, does that mean Christopher Lance won't be calling himself "Requestopher" any more? How do you take away listener involvement from a station? THEY ARE YOUR CUSTOMERS!!!

"I'm sorry, our playlist is so tight that we couldn't possibly play a song that you would like to hear..."

As for the "Beatles montage" -- that hideous "Stars On 45" drek -- that would have been the first thing I would have gotten rid of, too. Deplorably awful.

Never say "over the hill" around an old person, you whipper-snapper...

{Bumped up from the next thread:}

I hope that the "Pre-Beatles Ban" is selective, and not all-encompassing.

Has it gotten to the point that an Oldies station can't play Elvis because he's pre-Beatles? No more Buddy Holly? No more Chuck Berry? The Beach Boys had seven Billboard Top 40 hits before the Beatles hit these shores ... but now we won't hear "Surfin' USA" and "Little Deuce Coupe" any more?

The list could go on forever -- The Four Seasons, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Bobby Darin, The Champs ... how the heck can an Oldies station *not* play "Tequila" every once in a while?

Can the flip to oldies by one of Clear Channels bay area AM stations be coming rather soon? And it looks as if XM and Sirius might be gaining another bunch
of new subscribers? How old is this Terry Patrick guy? Why do I get the feeling he wasn't even born in the 50's or 60's? Do you think he's still waitiing for
his acne to clear up? lol lol

The corporate suits in New York came up with this hairbrained idea! Does it surprise any of us really?

That song has been played way more then once in a while. Everytime I listen to KFRC, I'm drunk.

Still the big 610's audience was mostly A's listeners. Take a look at the winter books and you see a difference. Just like KNBR's.

They need to move the A's to at least KYCY. It's a shame the way the year is starting to shape up, that there based on a religious station. It's hard to keep listeners to keep the dial on the frequency or want to remember to tune back there for baseball.

Re: KFRC Gets New Consultant - Changes

They need to blow up the station..update the overall sound of it. You can still play Beatles tunes if your station doesn't sound old to begin with.
People can get their nostalgia elsewhere. They should KILL that morning show.
When I listen, everything just sounds 'old'...and I'm pushin'40...

I don't know one consultant that does that. Generally, they insist on playing th elisteners' favorite music, often demanding research instead of gut feel programming.

Re: KFRC Gets New Consultant - Changes

I know! Why don't they play the current hits, sprinkle-in some compatible oldies, be live 24/7, have contests, jingles, promotions and live remotes, and have management back-up his employees when a listener can't tell enthusiasm when she hears it? We can call it, oh, I don't know..... "TOP 40".

As I write, I'm listening to the Beatles montage on KFRC at 12:45 PM on 7-31.
