Or maybe JACKED!!!!! hey, who knows with the current state of corp. radio these days, although KFRC does have a bunch of old listeners anywayz, could it be time for a format change???? las vegas recently got jacked, maybe now the bay area could become jacked too???

Re: KFRC PD GONE! (Bob Harlow?)

Is/was Bob Harlow the program director?

Before now I thought a Jack format wouldn't happen, but Max is just not working. Maybe it will get better, but the stuff I've heard from the Max morning and midday talent is Fresno quality, maybe worse. Plus, the 99.7 signal is far better. It could be a slugfest if KFRC flips. That would also require an almost entirely new staff.

I'm just musing here, mind you. Who can guess what Infinity management will do? To used-car salesmen and three-martini lunchers, lots of screwy things sound like a good idea when you're on the third olive.

Jack stations don't need staff. Just the program director and a voice tracker!

Infinity has planned to make KFRC a Jack station since they changed the one station they had in Vegas. I'm hearing they plan on having a one man show, meaning a PD and thats it. Since Infinity sold KEZR and KBAY to Next Media, their efforts are to destroy any possible chance Next Media may have at controlling the San Jose market. I recently listened to the Jack station in Las Vegas when I was there. Not Impressed! The music was all over the place and reminded me of a train wreck in between segues. C&C Music factory's Gonna Make You... into Aerosmith's I Dont Wanna Miss, then Fleetwood Mac, Landslide into Van Halen, JUMP. Not to sure what Jack is doing in Vegas. Not like the Vancouver Jack. If Infinity plans on running a station like Jack in the Bay area, they need to think twice. Jack in the City by the Bay just wont work.

I heartily agree ... given that MAX is going nowhere fast, and the much-publicized Jacks in NY and Chicago aren't exactly setting the world on fire either, you gotta wonder why they'd flip KFRC. Unless they plan to move oldies to 1550?

Jack in LA is doing well. Go figure.

Re: KFRC PD GONE!To Be A Jack Station 9-01

> It seems like Jack on 99.7 is constantly repeated as a done-deal every couple of weeks. So pardon me for sounding like a broken record, but it still doesn't make sense to me either. First, Infinity has 106.9 coming - so it's not like they don't have capacity for a new format. KFRC's ratings are declining, but still adequate - a bit higher than Alice or Live 105, and there hasn't been much talk about changing them to Jack. Yes, I know the long-time fashion in advertising is to avoid targeting consumers over 50, but we baby boomers are the most affluent generation living. We have lots of disposable income, and unlike our more tight-fisted Depression era parents, we dispose of that income regularly on expensive new cars, second homes, vacations, computers, food, etc...not just hemorroid ointment. This is a segment KFRC reaches, and some radio station will be smart enough to fill that need until boomers start dying off in significant numbers, which is at least a decade off. Having said that, if 99.7 has a better signal, I can see them going Jack on 99.7 and moving Oldies to 106.7. Finally, the ratings for Max FM are not so encouraging so far, so why would Infinity be anxious to flush a heritage station for half of a smaller pot - even if they can do Jack "better?" I notice that September 1st is predicted as the launch date for the format change. If it happens, I'll officially eat my words next Thursday.

KFRC PD

Jack and Max aren't exactly the same thing, gentlemen. 0

What's curious is that the other Bonneville Variety Hits stations in St Louis,
Phoenix and Chicago are doing really well. It could be San Fran isn't ready to
be a V.H. market. Comparing S.F. and L.A. is like apples and oranges, really,
so just because Jack does well down there doesn't mean something close to it will do the same in San Francisco.

Also, the previous SUBJECT line had KFRC going Jack September 1 but never actually digressed in the post. Must just been an attempt to get attention.

Here is a theory as to why:

L.A. is a very unique situation.<P ID="signature">______________

You just kind of hit and ran with the subject line on your original post ("KFRC ... To Be A Jack Station 9-01"). Were you guessing, wishing, hoping, or do you have an actual basis in fact for having posted September 1 as the "go" date for Jack on 99.7?

Since you only mentioned it in the subject, but not in the body of your post, it seemed a little suspect to me.

I can hear it already KFRC-FM 99.7 to Jack and Max-95.7 to oldies along with simulcast partner KKYA-1260AM. Not likey though as it would be to easy. 1550 KYCY as oldies is going nowhere. Just look
no further than Portland, Oregon and the mess that was made by switching KISN from FM to AM. Jack-FM on 99.7 is a lost cause, the music Jack would play is already well played in the bay area and in San Jose. Although Infinity is really good at programing lost
cause radio stations and keeping them that way! WNEW, WCBS, WJMK. Infinity would do better switching 99.7 to regional mexican hits of the 60's thru the early 90's, the ratings would be much better than the oldies played now! Just look at the ratings for KSJO that just came out today and its a no brainer move! Why should Clear Channel have all the fun? To the staff of KFRC 99.7 that maybe
out of a job in the next week I say thanks for the memories!

So Mr. Tim Jordan OM and Doug Harvill KFRC-FM GM, What's really going to happen? Why not just be upfront with the listeners about what the future may bring unlike the BS pulled on listeners in New York and Chicago!

Actually, KFRC had a nice bump today, and is a 10th behind Alice in the latest trend. If anything, it would make more sense for Infinity to put a Jack type format on 106.9 in October. Max is down significantly, but it may still be too early to tell. Off topic, but hear KFRC's HD Xmtr just came in.

All very true, but the difficulty has been getting advertisers to see it that way. Too many of those making ad buying decisions are early-30somethings who understand "Jack," Country and CHR, but shun anything that seems old to them.

The oldies format is going the way Easy Listening did 20 years ago. There are/were still listeners, but not enough advertisers. Billing is higher with younger skewing formats in spite of smaller audiences.

Re: KFRC PD GONE!To Be A Jack Station 9-01

What I find fascinating about these early trends for Variety hits is the wide variation. In some markets, the format is doing extremely well right out of the gate. In others, such as San Francisco, the format is off to a horrific start. There are some in the middle, but if you were to chart it on a graph you would see clusters on both extremes.

Some would say it's far too early to judge if a station like Max will be a success or not. I generaly agree with that. But it's just as valid to ask if the VH stations doing well now will still be winning a year down the road.

Re: KFRC PD GONE!To Be A Jack Station 9-01

Dying Medium, you Hit It Right on the NAIL! 106.9 will be the new home for the Doghouse come October. Personally, I believe it to be a great place for the Doghouse to start fresh. Not only will it be fresh with the gang of the Doghouse, but can you remember the day's of Hot 97.7? Try Hot 106.9, with the Doghouse, Jazzy Jim Archer, Big Daddy Vic and more former Hot names to come! Just a few weeks ago, several former Hot 97.7 DJ's got together at the Agenda in San Jose. Why do you think this happen and who paid all of them to come out...Infinity! Is Lisa Fox leaving "LA" and coming back to the city by the bay? Panama Jack considering jumping ship and making an afternoon drive part of his daily life in SF? Will Christopher Lance be OM of the new Hot 106? How does Jazzy Jim Archer fit in this, Music Director and PD of the all new Hot 106. Jim is the only one who knows Wild inside and out and can seriously destroy wild with his old chums of Hot 97.7. Wild will fall from existance soon after. The big Cheezes of Infinity in San Francisco aren't stupid. They have been thinking of new way's to control the bay area. Now they have the tools to do so. Bust Wild and KMEL right where it's gonna hurt them the most. Use talent of a former Hot station in the Bay Area that well, everyone in the South Bay loves and now miss.
As for KFRC, we all know the station has heritage and is known for changing with times. Infinity is well aware of the next decade and how declining sales will hurt revenue. Most of their listeners are now on a fixed budget. Those that a JACK audience will target are today's high rolers, home buyers, business owners, Escalade buying listeners they (Infinity) aim to attract. What better weekend than Labor Day Weekend to make the transition to Jack! One month later, as the preparation continues today, launch HOT 106 to the Bay Area! Halloween music for a day then non-stop commmercial free mixing for three day's straight. Music like old school jams by Stevie B - Party Your Body, Dino's - Summer Girls and today's current hits by Kelly Clarkson, Usher and you get! An all new "Fresh Music and Old School Party Jams" staion for the bay area.

Re: G-Bliss....

I sorta figured that the doggs would go on ethier the new jack fm or 106.9, but how can they call themselves HOT 106, when 106.9 is leaning towards the 107 freq.??? and I don't see anything on the net about a hot 106 webpage coming soon?? will they be a full fledge POP CHR or a rythmic CHR like the rest of the wannabes??? and please tell me they are going to have a COOL ASS logo, also, I think they should bring back Diana Steele to do afternoon drive, and have Evan Luck do evenings again, where the heck is evan luck anywayz????? does this mean they will bring back HOT DAY SOUTH BAY at great america???? If what you say is true, then it will be cool to have another straight CHR back in the bay, I'm getting bored of KHOP@951 in the valley.

GB - Now THAT is interesting and exciting speculation - I hope you're right. And if 106.9's signal is weaker than 99.7, I can see Infinity swapping formats and making it "Hot 99.7." I've got to disagree though with the comment that most KFRC listeners are on "fixed incomes." The Baby Boom years are considered to be 1945-1960. That means that the oldest Boomers are 60, and the youngest are 45. Most of us are still working. I'm 53, both my wife and I still work, and we have more combined household income than ever before. With a dozen years left on my mortgage and kids in college, I doubt I'll be able to retire until 2017 or so.

"Randy in Eugene" made a good point about advertisers not paying attention to older consumers, and advertising on lower rated stations with a younger audience. That explains how K-101/Star 101.3 can soldier on forever with the same basic format and be a top biller despite usually mediocre ratings.
