KFWD Format Switch 8/1

MundoFox is doing a soft launch August 1 in some markets. Official debut is August 13.

http://www.tvnewscheck.com/article/60996/mundofox-is-aiming-young-and-bilingual

"With its soft launch set for next Wednesday (Aug. 1), the new Spanish-language broadcast network is targetting younger viewers — 18-34s — more than the existing Hispanic networks, and it isn't afraid to let some English on the air, including commercials. Partners News Corp. and Colombia's RCN say they'll have 50 affiliates covering 80% of the U.S. Hispanic population on board by the official launch on Aug. 13."

Sorry to see KFWD go back to Spanish. Good luck though. I hope it is successful.
I also think KTXD could make sime headway by buying some ads on KFWD over the next few days.
Wonder how KTXD is doing in the ratings?

I thought KFWD was a Belo station with WFAA. I thought Belo was programming KFWD 52 RF HD9. Why???? We going to put FOX Spanish channel on 52 . FOX 4 needs to add FOX Spanish to sub channel 4.2 on FOX 4 main HD signal. This is a better way than changing KFWD 52 programming.

IIRC-- Being the .1 channel guarantees a better cable channel slot. And Fox made some comment on capitalizing on the affiliate's available spectrum. So maybe they have other plans for the .2 and beyond.

No, the JSA/LMA ends. According to Uncle Barky's column several weeks ago, the Belo programming and sales agreement had an option for Belo to buy KFWD to make a duopoly, but Belo never acted on it.

Belo couldn't act on it -- FCC rules technically do still prohibit common ownership of newspapers and TV stations within the same market. The combination of WFAA and the Morning News is long ago waivered in, but that waiver wouldn't extend to KFWD.

The option agreement was written on the assumption that the FCC would repeal that rule, but the repeal got sidetracked in the courts and has never happened. And while Belo (TV stations) and AH Belo (newspapers) are now technically separate companies, there's enough common management that the FCC still apparently would not allow Belo to buy KFWD.

Also it was reported here a while back that belo was going keep helping with providng gear for the station to operate but that the channel would have its own managment staff and station employees. I don't see KFWD building a new master control room and new station offices. They will still be in the same building as WFAA and will get equipment support from WFAA so part of the JSA will still continue.

Also does anyone know if KFWD will finnaly broadcast in native HD come wednesday? They already have a HD feed going to cable systems but it was only showing upconverted 480i shows in 1080i? If I am not mistaken WFAA is helping KFWD add HD equipment to master control.

Sounds like an LATV clone. If you like 50.1 you'll probably like MundoFox too.

They must have some desire to keep KFWD under their roof for some reason. Otherwise, why would Belo spend their extremely-pinched pennies on something that isn't owned or controlled by them? Unless WFAA/Belo is really *that* generous of late (I guess they were once before with KERA/13) .....

If some firm wanted to buy Ch.52 in the future, wouldn't it be a bit awkward buying a station that's housed within another station, without full possibility of having true control and ownership of what makes it up?

Fox would rather have this network on a full-power station they don't own.
KFWD is still owned by HIC - the same company that owned it when it was Telemundo. It's no surprise they took advantage of this new opportunity.

Money! Simply put, KFWD will be paying Belo to be housed at their facilities.

One plus: With the flip to MundoFox this morning, KFWD is finally broadcasting in HD

Actually, I took a peek earlier today, and a couple of the actors on 1 show snuck in some English, and Ch.52 aired an English ad for The Dump (the furniture store) as well as a (non-Mundo)Fox promo for a new fall show, Ben and Kate, all in English, no Spanish subtitles. Hopefully, no Hispanics watching will get confused and think Ben and Kate will be on MundoFox this fall.

The picture was better, but I still need to upgrade to an exterior antenna (not sure whether to mount it just on the eave a-la a Dish or DirecTV or a ground-up pole (then I'd have to figure out how to ground it)) since my crappy rabbit ears just aren't cutting it.

They are going after bilingual Hispanics. I grew up in the Valley where it was very common to see or hear English ads on Spanish language shows and vice versa. In fact the evening local news in English would include eyewitness sound in Spanish and not offer translations. And you couldn't hope to find a job dealing with the public if you didn't speak both languages. That last part is still true.
