KFXK Ownership and 9pm Newscast news...

Years ago the FCC used to have financial requirements for station owners. Thankfully, those requirements were loosened and allowed stations to operate like any other business. However, if KFXK and KETK couldn't afford to do the transition to digital without going into bankruptcy, they needed to cease operation.

Tyler-Longview is too small a market to support 3 full blown network affiliates with news, let alone 4. The new owner of KFXK will soon find this out. Bottom line: don't be surprised if both stations wind up back in bankruptcy within the next 5 years.

It's the same owner. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent....

I just find it comforting that these companies have found all these loopholes that allow them to skirt the ownership rules.

News hasn't ever worked on 51. It's just not a news station. There's nothing wrong with that. When I was there, we did just fine with sitcoms and shows like Baywatch, Renegade, and others. I just don't see this time being any different.

Has anyone noticed that Mike DeLear (SP?) is no longer GM of their sister station KETK? I haven't read anything here about it, but I believe he departed a couple of weeks ago.

51 needs to give up before it even gets out of the starting gate.....They'll never make it. You think the last time would have taught them a lesson....

I think it's more likely the owners are trying to appease the folks at Fox. Fox wants news on all its affiliates. Where Fox has options for other affiliations, the push to get news is high. (that's why Waco probably won't have news on its Fox station for a long time since Fox really has no other choice in that market)

Although, do they REALLY have another option in East Texas? Considering that KETK still controls every station except KLTV, and KLTV isn't gonna change ANYTHING.

Considering how eaten up the Tyler market is from the east and west with Shreveport and Dallas, it seems to me Fox could just do without an affiliate and probably wouldn't lose too many viewers. To me, that would be the biggest fear for the folk at KFXK.

I'm afraid you're right. With FOX4 from Dallas being carried on cable in Tyler and many other places in the area, for instance, they've got plenty of competition and nothing that really sets KFXK apart. Unless you consider that for seven out of 24 hours each weekday some kind of "Court" is in session: http://research.backchannelmedia.com/station/show/KFXK/

I hope this doesn't qualify as "beating a dead horse," but you guys are really hitting on a theme that's near and dear to my heart.

Local stations that don't have substatiantial local programming are going to find themselves in dire straits very soon.
