The Beave said:IF someone was to actually do surveys on the streets of Phoenix (I hear corporate radio grumbling as we speak) and actually find out first hand what they listen to and why... Radio can't rely on phone participation, or diaries. Although that's what we do, How many stations have you heard that have hired independent consulting firms that actually went out on the streets asking for opinions from listeners and prospective listeners?
What's wrong with Callout research? I don't know about the diaries, but I think Callout research will get you more participation than taking it to the streets. A solicitor on the phone can be given a simple answer from somebody in the comfort of their own home; a solicitor on the street would most likely be ignored or given an excuse to why they can't answer.
But I agree with you on your main point: more research!
