KGIL Returns

Actually, I was being facetious with that suggestion.

More realistic is the idea of putting KGIL's programming on 540. Of course, that won't help the commuter who complained that he can't hear 1260 on his commute between Seal Beach and Montebello. 540 hardly comes in at all in that region. In fact, I would say Saul has a real AM coverage hole throughout much of the South Bay.

"Them's the breaks" because he bought a radio station that was meant to primarily serve the San Fernando Valley. It was licensed to the city of San Fernando and the pattern also favored most of the Santa Clarity Valley. When it was upgraded in power it still has the same limitations, just more signal in the same areas as before.

In any event it is nice to have Michael Jackson back, I had nearly forgotten what a good interviewer he is. Also nice to have a Michael Jackson who is not a freak in the news. As I and others have previously discussed, there may be issues with the syndicated shows going on 540, especially as I understand Neal Boortz, who is already on in San Diego. Maybe drop "The Zoo" and put the Adult Standards back on surrounding MJ.

Too bad they can't get together a little regional net for Mr. Jackson, using some of the other pattern challenged AM's in this region. He would have been good for KTLK but I'm sure that he is too old for their consideration and anyway they are somewhat directionally hampered though much better in LA and the "South beach" areas.

Since AT&T has canceled the Time : “At The Tone The Time Will Be...” Maybe Saul will consider this as an option if the new format dies. An AM station that just tells you the time. What competition is there? The Hollywood Bowl Parking station on the other side of the dial? Not even close.

Not so far from reality; XEQK in Mexico City did all time all the time for many decades. 11 5" ads and the time check. You could buy an ad every minute, every two minutes or every 4.

Well, LA Radio got another complaint today from a woman who was frustrated that she couldn't hear Michael Jackson in West Covina because of the static.

You know, with enough complaints, Saul could plot himself a neat little map showing where in LA County KGIL isn't heard. Then, at the approriate time, he can beg the FCC for an FM translator channel which the commission seems so eager to want to give AM stations.

Or would that get put into the "Fat Chance" file?

As a follow up to this discussion, the OC Register reported that Saul has been telling listeners who are complaining that they can't hear KGIL to listen via the web at www.1260.am and to download podcasts of Michael Jackson's show.

He also recommended that people purchase a GE Super Radio to pick up KGIL.

I forgot to mention that Saul also plans to simulcast KGIL on the 105.1 HD channel. Whether this means the end of KMZT or if he is going to use an HD 3 channel is unclear. But this idea of migrating an AM station over to an HD channel may be the eventual trend for other AM/FM owners in L.A.

There are a number of AM stations already broadcasting in HD (here's a link to just the California lineup: http://ibiquity.com/hd_radio/hdradio_find_a_station/CA/StnMarket). The problem is the HD Alliance can't convince people to spend the money to buy the radios, thus the listenership is insufficient to be able to generate ad revenue (especially while radio as an industry is suffering declining revenues across the country). So whether KGIL is broadcasting in HD or in Quadrophonic (for those people able to remember that far back), it's really not much of a story because there are few people listening to KGIL-AM and fewer yet able to listen to KGIL on HD. Might that change in 5 years? I suppose it could. But I doubt KGIL's current format will be around then.

To dbdigital: after re-reading your previous post, I realize your point was more about the concept of putting the talk format on one of Saul's FM HD channels...thus giving it the same footprint at the KMZT signal (as opposed to simply doing an HD version on the existing KGIL signal pattern). My bad...I see what you're driving at. That said, I still think the challenge is one of limited audience using HD Radios, and so-far non-existent (or barely existent) revenue to the HD band overall.

540 gets KGIL too!

LARadio.com announced that as of next week, KGIL will be simulcasting most of its programming on AM 540, which will help Orange County and San Diego listeners. The only KGIL program that currently airs in San Diego is Neal Boortz, so other than those two hours (7a-9a), the rest of the station should be able to be simulcasted. :)

This woman also complained that her great grandchildren didn't visit her in the nursing home.
