KGY flips to Oldies, adds FM translator

Alpha Broadcasting is doing pretty good down there, KXL FM, KINK and KUPL are among the highest rated stations. It was too bad that they switched at would of been KXL AM 85th anniversary. Was hoping for some old sound bytes and coverage of the station' heritage. But yes, KUFO offered something that only KGON remotely comes close to in Portland

So there is no modern rocker in Portland?

Dropping KUFO left a void that would cost a fair amount to recreate in Portland. The demographics probably were studied and decided against another station giving it a go but who knows in the future. KISW has been KISW for decades. It won't be monkeyed with unless some idiot decides its time.

They used to have more money to throw around for shows like BJ Shea, which you need for an active rock station but even they have cut back. It still does well, reaches Vancouver BC, so their demographics say 5-6 million people. It's warehouse and manufacturing rock, so a lot more of that exists between Tacoma and Canada than Portland to say, Salem.

The 102.3 signal goes as far as Ridgefield, not much of a player there. They list having dj's but don't know it they are local or not.

KISW and KZOK will always be the Seattle "institutions" for rock music. Also, it helps that the KISW signal is so powerful. I've picked it up it up in the lower mainland with ease. It seems like the stations on the Entercom tower have better coverage compared to the other Tiger Mountain station. Can anyone confirm or deny that?

Ok, but that's pretty much the same with KKBW, there's not much of an audience in that area, is there? CC could have just put the Premium Choice Active Rock format there. Instead, they went to alternative.

Speaking of KKXA, why don't they dump Regional Mexican on 1520 in Portland and flip it to a KKXA simulcast. Change calls to KXAP (KXA Portland) while you are at it, too...

Geez, I remember 1520 as KYXI, all news back about 1982. Before that is was KGON AM. Since your over there, is 960 KALE still doing Country Legends?

Yes, KALE is still "Country Legends 960".

They are adamant in the fact that they make sure the listeners know that its only "KXA"! :D

Yah... stations have bend doing that sort of thing forever. More recently, KKMO did the same thing. The announcer would barely say "kay", then much more loudly, "KAY EMM OH". Same with KKOL. Me?... I would never have let those 3-letter calls go in the first place. KXL and KGW (am) are others.

Not to belabor the KGY thread, but they've been creative with their audible positioning since someone there decided to adopt the "KAYO" concept without actually getting the call letters. All perfectly legal, so long as the top-of-hour is unambiguous.

If you go back far enough, you might remember "KOMO. TV, for Seattle", back when they all had staff announcers. I always did get a kick out of how solemn and serious some of those guys could be with their IDs... "Kay Eye Are Ohh Tee-Vee... Channel Sevennnnnnnn, Seattle!)

I remember watching that KIRO signoff as a kid! That must have been around the late 90's to early 2000's when i was staying up late on summer vacation. I miss the sign off's, are there any stations left that still do it in town?

I assume that KYYO will eventually make a deal with KAYO 100.3 Wasilla to swap call letters or something!

But what would the Wasilla station call itself? "100.3 The Yo-Yo"? Or "K-Yo-Yo"> That's what KYYO sounds like to me!

The station is actually KAYO 100.9 in Wasilla. It seems they only brand as "country legends 100.9". If they are not putting too much stock into their letting, maybe they would trade.

I would say very little effect. I can barely get KDUX here in Olympia. The coverage map shows KXXK fading out around Elma.

I find it interesting how those Aberdeen FM signals don't have as much western reach as they used to. I may be incorrect, but I believe someone in the Seattle forum (probably Crainbebo) told me that most of the stations are operating from a hill near Cosmopolis. I believe KSWW had their tower atop a hill near Satop at one time. As for KDUX, you are right. The signal completely drops from the radio somewhere in the rugged terrain near Capitol Peak.

Yeah Cosi Hill. I compare the path by using part 97 repeaters, which gives me a rough idea how well a translator will do compared to say a 440 or 902mhz signal over a given area. Bush Mtn 902 repeater is almost identical to KGY translator in coverage.

Speaking of the mess on 95.3, it's about to get messier. A new LPFM has been approved for Bremerton at 95.3 w/ 8 watts
