KHHT now rhythmic oldies

Naw WKTU plays Rythnmic currents. KHHT sounds like a updated verison of the old Mega format without Smokey Robinson and George Lopez

In what way do you think Hot 92 sounds like WKTU? Here's the 1 pm hour for both stations:

KHHT

Pebbles - Girlfriend
K.C. & The Sunshine Band - Boogie Shoes
The Supremes - Baby Love
Michael Jackson - Rock With You
LaBelle - Lady Marmalade
The O'Jays - Back Stabbers
Prince & The Revolution - When Doves Cry
Roger - So Ruff, So Tuff
McFadden & Whitehead - Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now
Roberta Flack - Killing Me Softly With His Song
The Commodores - Lady (You Bring Me Up)
Dazz Band - Let It Whip
Kurtis Blow - The Breaks

WKTU

Katy Perry - Firework
Beyonce - Irreplaceable
Usher - More
Lady Gaga - Poker Face
Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel
Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are
B.o.B - Airplanes (w/ Hayley Williams)
Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body
Mike Posner - Please Don't Go
Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow
Nina Sky - Move Ya Body
Jay-Z - Empire State Of Mind (w/ Alicia Keys)

Other than the fact that they both played 1980s Michael Jackson, I don't see any similarity.

Well looking at KTU playlist it looks way better than KHHT. Too bad KBIG didnt give the format a try. Their verison of Rythnmic AC was very confusing. Didnt know if they were Hot AC or Rythnmic AC sometimes. WISX in Philly and WMIA in Miamai is having that same problem sampling KBIG old format

WKTU's playlist is more or less like KIIS-FM's playlist.

Funny thing is, this format has been done to death in LA and failed each time (or, if not failed outright, at least failed to succeed). I don't know why stations keep bringing it back when it's always been either a flash in the pan format or just plain lackluster here.

Am I missing something? They sound the same as always. Kool and The Gang, Rick James, Evil Ways/Santana. Explain the difference somebody.

The question is why doesn't Rhythmic AC work here? Shouldn't it attract a lot of Hispanic listeners, a la Rhythmic CHR and Rhythmic Oldies? Don't we have a lot of Hispanics in LA? I think the reason it has been tried so often is because it should work here. Apparently, it has never been done correctly here. If CC wanted to do it here, they should start by duplicating KTU.

KBIG would have been the perfect choice but for some reason CC didnt give it a full go. Maybe they were scared it might hurt KIIS. I remeber when KDL dance format signed on at 103.1 CC did a LMA and flipped it to Indie. KBIG was very confusing. It sounded good but very confusing. Either Hot AC or Rythnmic AC. One thing I hated about Movin is that they didnt give it a chance. Once they hired that PD from Mega 100 he moved the station into a rythnmic oldies direction. LOL Then all of sudden hey Ricky has a idea lets play 80's New Wave. The ratings increased a bit but it wasnt enough to save the format. KHHT tried to somewhat do it but I guess they were scared too of running of some of their loyal listeners. Not to mention taking a chance of ruining their so called Old School and R&B brand. But as it goes in this industry its all about making that billing

So basically we had 4 so called Rythnmic AC stations that bit the dust due to lackluster ratings.

KIBB B100.3
KMVN Movin 93.9
KBIG 104
KHHT Hot 92.3

The reason why I included KHHT because its more of a rythnmic oldies station now. Alot of the stuff they played when it was Mega is back. If I hear a 90's song maybe once every two hours. So basically it serves the hispanic adults and still caters to blacks, whites, and asian listeners as well.

KBIG is the only rythnmic ac station I can think of that was somewhat decent ratings wise for a while. I miss the days of thump radio on friday nights after 12 midnight

KTU works in NY, in part, because the New York Hispanic audience is predominantly from the Caribbean Basin. That group is, via a mix of heritage, ancestry and exposure, partial to Afro-Antillean music. And from there, it is only a small step to rhythmic music in English. After all, salsa came from NY, in a fusion of Black and Jazz music and Cuban and Puerto Rican music of the 60's.

The Hispanic community in LA is not Afro-Antillean, and does not have the same response to r&b, rhythmic and related music that might occur in New York. KTU will not work specifically and the concept has to be modified and not "covered" elsewhere in the market.

Good analysis, David. Cultural heritage cannot be underestimated. Even close to home, 92.5 (XHRM) works in San Diego, but probably wouldn't work in LA because the market demographics are noticeably different.

There are some who speculate that CC will use one of it properties to simulcast KFI on an FM signal. Makes no sense, though, IMHO.

Wow the only time KHHT plays R&B when Art Loboe's on. He's playing Case Missing You from 2001. KKBT used to play this every day. Love it.

The stuff you hear on his show is the exact same music you hear on KOKO 94FM in Fresno. He owns the station and it plays a lot of hits you dont hear on LA radio anymore go figure. Rythnmic Top 40, R&B, Pop and Freestyle music

Also on KGGI.

The Art Laboe Sunday special started on KGGI in 1991 and it expanded to other markets on the westcoast since then. KHHT has been airing it since its days as MEGA.

I starting to think that Art Loboe is voice tracked.
