Kicks 96 - Richmond

Kick butt station, mostly live except for evenings. Have an AM (WHON) that does local and syndicated talk. Small group owner, GM (if he's still there) seems like a nice and very knowledgeable guy.

Kicks 96 is one of the stations owned by Chattanooga-based Brewer Broadcasting; the GM is a micromanager and fiercely competitive to the point that, in my opinion, he might say anything bad about the competition (the five stations owned by Dave Rodgers), true or untrue, if it would serve his purposes. WFMG (G 101.3) is Kicks' only real business competition but they compete for listeners with WIFE-FM.

WIFE-FM 94.3 probably doesn't compete too much ... if I remember correctly, signal is a problem in Richmond.

Don't know the GM, but I tried to get Kicks 96 in the burbs of Cincy ... I found it more appealing than anything in that town. (been a while since I was in Cincy, though)

Recently, I remember the question – "Who does the best FM radio in Richmond?" My second-string comic relief kicked-in and I responded: "That’s like comparing jars of peanut butter—in the generic isle at the grocery store!" Music preference aside, WQLK [Kicks] and WFMG [G101-3] are on-par. Although laudable by local standards, to characterize Kicks-96 as "kick-butt" is just a bit gracious. 1490-WKBV’s finesse is with community news; but 930-WHON, with a better signal and the Rush franchise flanked by homegrown morning and afternoon programs, appears to earn Tingler Road favor in the News/Talk contest.

You hit that finishing nail square-on its tiny head! The final tube had yet to cool on the former 100.3 WIFE-FM rig before that "fiercely competitive" WQLK GM planted three very-tacky billboards in FM-deprived Connersville with the headline: "Has your WIFE left you?" – And boldly-assumed squatter’s rights as Connersville’s radio station – for the FIRST TIME EVER and for the easy-pickin’ sloppy-seconds only. He even established his convoluted version of a "local presence" by renting the canopy of an empty downtown C'ville storefront in a further-tacky attempt at a local office/studio appearance, but what resided beyond that logo’d canopy-covered front door was only dusty space used to store a riding lawnmower ::)

Fact of the matter is, the Rodgers regime is far classier in its operation AND better-endowed by its bank balance than is that of “The BBC” [Brewer B’cast Corp for short].

The recent reincarnation of Country WIFE-FM at 94.3, although WELL EXECUTED, breaks a sweat to compete in their target hometown of Connersville... It is hampered only by its 3kw-equiv signal from nearly twenty-miles to the west... Otherwise, it is a good effort! Interestingly, Rodger’s best programming effort seems to reside on his most demure facility—1580 WIFE AM! HOLY COW, that’s a nice-sounding Oldies station – excellent playlist, presentation, AWESOME audio quality on a competent AM receiver, and not a sat-format in sight [THANK GOD]! Bob Wills did a good job launching that station, and recently-arrived PD Ted Cramer has it singing like a superstar :)

Speaking of Kicks96 is that Buddha guy thats on in the mornings with Angie the same guy who is on the AM station at 3pm? The guy thats on in the afternoon his name is Dan Mills. They sound one in the same. Dan has been there a long time. Anybody know how long?

Does anyone remember the original generation of WQLK, pretty much a "rock" station at the time? Was it 78 or 79, Boomer Dinkins, Panama Jack (red), Simon and some others ... came in from Panama Beach, FL. Was it a Brewer Station then, I'm too young to remember? Eacho of those guys made it to WNAP before it decay'ed away in the 80s.

More original than that was the original sister AM WHON, which was Top 40 until they flipped the format to the FM (I think 1979)

I do remember QLK back in the late 70's. It was a Brewer station then. Some good talent came out of there including Brian James who sounded at age 19 like he does today. Great voiceover talent that you can hear everyday as the announcer for the tv show Extra.

Japman, it still is a Brewer station. They left the rock days behind back in 1990 or 91. They have been a country station ever since.

They flipped in the summer of 1993 to country.

Also, Buddah is in fact Dan Mills. I remember him on WQLK dating all the way back to the station's rock 40 days in the mid-80s, and if I remember correctly, he's been doing a talk show on WHON ever since the station went talk in 1991.

Brewer has played it rather smart in programming WHON. WLW down in Cincinnati is pretty popular in the Richmond area, and WHON counters that with a mix of heavy-hitter national talk (Rush, Michael Savage, Coast to Coast AM, etc.) and local talk with Troy in the morning and Dan in the afternoon.

WKBV used to be the go-to station for news in Richmond, but these days its more or less an ESPN Radio affiliate with a local morning show (at least from what I can gather). Does WKBV have other syndicated talk programs besides the ESPN Radio fare?

WKBV does a more complete coverage of local and area news most days than WHON. The stories cover a wider range of topics and include a lot more local audio, including excerpts from the local interviews done on the morning show. Those interviews rage from hard news topics like the local impact of the Governor's property tax reform program to community events. Most of the interviews are done live...even the ones with Congressman Mike Pence once a month. WKBV also carried a lot of information about the big Centennial Model T Party that spent more than a week in Richmond and a lot of money with local businesses this summer. That included interviews with more than 30 visiting drivers.

WKBV also runs Dr. Joy Browne out of New York City for the obligatory advice show between the morning show and ESPN's Tirico and Van Pelt. Where is it written in stone that a local AM station has to carry political talk shows?

WKBV runs a syndicated home improvement show live on Saturday mornings and the usual religious programs on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, including live church services.

So it seems that WKBV's doing more to keep their local license than WHON.

True! Brian got his start at 101.3 WRIA as a part timer in the early 80's and Brewer offered him full time. Another true story: When 96 was Top 40 with a rock edge and 101-3 was Top 40 with more of a pop base, I was able to get a pair of tickets to see Prince in Indy. We (WRIA) promoted the hell out of that pair of tickets. Not to be out done, QLK promoted that they had "rolls and rolls of tickets to give away". Truth was... they had to buy a pair of tickets from a scalper. ONE pair... just like we had ONE pair.

In my opinion, Brewer has always been slimy. And I'm surprised they're still in business and not behind bars.

IIRC, Brewer was originally based in Tell City and relocated to Chattanooga. When the old man died one son took over and expanded while the Mom and other son, Jay ran WTCJ in Tell City. WTCJ faded through the nineties and was finally sold to the competitor Bud Walters who relocated the studio 30 miles away in Owensboro, KY. Today WTCJ just takes up bandwidth.

FWIW, Brewer was a launching point for a few who went on to bigger and better things. Denny Nugent started with Brewer and later programed WHAS in the eighties. Greg Strassell began at WTCJ and now a VP/Programming for CBS Boston.

What name did Brian James goes by on WRIA? I remember a Brian Oberly working there but no Brian James.

Brian James' last name is Oberle....and he definitely is the voiceover guy (and the guy who also narrated the computer-generated documentary on the Spartans' last stand that the History Channel likes to run over and over again.) Had a chance to work with him briefly in Lafayette (at what was WXUS, now WKHY) and when he did fill-in weekend talk show work at WLW about 11 years ago. I was working in the newsroom.

As I mentioned in an earlier post Brian is currently the voiceover guy for the tv show Extra.

Thanks you Chris Nolte. I like listening to you in the morning. I think your show is interesting.
