Anyone have any opinions about Kicks 96 in Richmond?
canolte said:Kicks 96 is one of the stations owned by Chattanooga-based Brewer Broadcasting; the GM is a micromanager and fiercely competitive to the point that, in my opinion, he might say anything bad about the competition (the five stations owned by Dave Rodgers), true or untrue, if it would serve his purposes.

Was it 78 or 79, Boomer Dinkins, Panama Jack (red), Simon and some others ... came in from Panama Beach, FL. Was it a Brewer Station then, I'm too young to remember? Eacho of those guys made it to WNAP before it decay'ed away in the 80s.

True! Brian got his start at 101.3 WRIA as a part timer in the early 80's and Brewer offered him full time. Another true story: When 96 was Top 40 with a rock edge and 101-3 was Top 40 with more of a pop base, I was able to get a pair of tickets to see Prince in Indy. We (WRIA) promoted the hell out of that pair of tickets. Not to be out done, QLK promoted that they had "rolls and rolls of tickets to give away". Truth was... they had to buy a pair of tickets from a scalper. ONE pair... just like we had ONE pair.1316wwood said:Some good talent came out of there including Brian James who sounded at age 19 like he does today. Great voiceover talent that you can hear everyday as the announcer for the tv show Extra.

Had a chance to work with him briefly in Lafayette (at what was WXUS, now WKHY) and when he did fill-in weekend talk show work at WLW about 11 years ago. I was working in the newsroom.
