Kidd Chris Problems?

I don't get this at all.

When O&A got in trouble for the Homeless Charlie bit, or Imus with Rev. Al, or JV and Elvis with the Asian community, there was outrage, there was protests, and people were fired/suspended within 2 weeks.

From what I understand, there was no organized protest, no outrage. This kind of sounds like WYSP is planning to flip the format and wanted/needed a way to fire Chris and not have to pay him his entire contract.

I highly doubt that CBS radio will intentionally fire Kidd Chris.

That's a rather broad, grand-standing statement. There's audience for this kind of material. Just because it doesn't appeal to you doesn't mean there's no appeal.

I'm not saying hardcore hate should be on the radio, but shock radio should be.

An interesting point that was brought up... the deragatory term that is the title of the song (lest Mommy's Henchmen (tm Radio-Info) get pissy) was originally brought to Philadelphia airwaves by... Opie and ANthony.

What does that even mean? You don't "accidentally" fire someone. Firing someone is ALWAYS with intent.

After the O&A mess, I wouldn't be shocked if there was some sort of provision in CBS contracts that can get you terminated for lewd and/or racist content without you getting all your money.

O&A lost their show for Sex for Sam, but still got paid their full contract. Imus, on the other hand, had to sue to get some money from CBS after he lost his gig.

If there was a pending format change, they would have to pay their contracted talent the full boat, I would think.

Without listening to the song, YSP crawled up in the corner AWAITING the onslaught. Essentially, terrestrial radio has become afraid of its own shadow. Thank you, Janet Jackson... and See you next Tuesday!!!

Personally, I think Kidd Chris sucks, BUT!!! It's time for the anti-PC crowd to start pushing back, starting with the radio. Safe radio is going to doom AM and FM. HD won't make a hill of difference. Make broadcast radio INTERESTING again!!! Take the reins off, [EDIT]!!!! BWAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!

As I'm not privvy to the inner workings of WYSP, I can only guess...however...

It is commonplace for stations to ignore any event that might cause controversy in hopes that "nobody complains" Which usually means...We hope nobody got it on tape and files a complaint with an agency that could act on this, or a client doesn't walk.

The fact that this thing was run repeatedly (most likely in a morning show promo) speaks to the ignorance of a bunch of people within the building. Someone dropped the ball. And ultimately the Program Director is responsible for everything said/broadcast on their station. So, CBS was completely justified in blowing out both the person responsible, and the one who allowed it to run.

My personal opinion of Kidd Chris aside...ANY talent who thinks that this kind of content is not only acceptable, but funny, demeans the rest of us. Radio has spent a considerable time trying to re-establish itself as not pandering to the LCD. Many talented people work every day to be entertaining, and yes...occasionally push the envelope.

But...perception is reality. And in a big city like Philadephia...where the national media looks at it being so "major league"...to have this be representative of what morning Rock radio in the majors is...just takes us all down.

I'm really personally angry. This guy has turned an already over-attentive media/FCC's attention back on what's BAD about what we do.

There's an old saying:

"Nobody remembers the good we do...Nobody forgets the bad"

It's talentless, unfunny bits like this that continue to perpetuate the myth of radio's failure to be a viable entertainment medium.

I might be wrong...but I don't think so. Not this time.

What is amazing to me is that people get fired for doing what they were hired to do. Does the management of CBS want us to believe that they had no idea what was going on. When I worked in radio there were hard wired monitors in every office. I don't personally enjoy all of the socalled shock jocks but because there are people who do they should be on.

I did enjoy Howard Stern but he went satellite. Here in LA I liked Bill Handel, but since "Nipplegate" and Stern's defection his show is a shadow of what it once was. At least since he airs from 5am to 9 the first hour is still somewhat better being in the "Safe Harbor. Even so a lot of the parody and off the wall commentary has disappeared or toned down drastically.

and you should have the final say....? Thats YOUR opinion... But im sure other people think differently

I'm not a big Kid Chris fan but a simple 2 week suspension along with a fine would have been more appropriate than flat out firing him. As far as the PD that was cruel. No PD can oversee every little detail that goes out over the air. Looks like a cutting of the budget by firing with cause. CBS radio has become such a low class company to work for.

O&A or Stern are their only options at this point and Stern is locked into Sirius. Forget Adam Corolla or Danny Partridge.

YSP should stay local. Play all music on morning drive, something the station hasn't done in years.

Yes, yes! If at first you don't succeed, lower the bar a little more!

Maybe I'm getting too old (48), but I just don't see a place for that bit on the air. When licenses are on the line, when stations have millions on the line in contracts, lawyers and advertising revenue, how the hell does this get on the air? I like a lot of shock jock humor, but this went way too far -- especially in the political climate of the past couple of years. Unfriggingbelievable. Neither Chris nor Cook should ever work in the industry again, but I'm sure they will.

O & A would be a logical choice for a replacement, as they were there before. They were starting to take off when they got yanked.

I didn't see anything to support that.

This is a win-lose-win for Chris.

Chris was never going to take over the morning drive for the market because the station was never going to put out the marketing dollars to make that happen.  That's the loss. (oh and read between the lines, the termination of the show was not because of the 'racist song'.  It was just a convenient enough excuse.)

However, he would never have gotten away with much more of the content than he was on terrestrial radio, so to be terminated is probably a blessing.  A win.

With the merger of Sirius and XM, he has the best chance to try and land a gig.  Execs will be mulling over programming content for the merged provider and he may be able to wiggle his way in.  A win as well, if it works out.

Meanwhile, Preston and Steve will stay put and remain a terrestrial radio show which is non-syndicated.  Honestly, if you consider it, it really does speak volumes as to the value assigned to the program and content.  How on earth does this show not get syndicated by now?

The real bottom line is that CBS Radio has horrible leadership and management and they just showed that by firing somebody 3 months after a supposed infraction.  If it honestly takes that long to get wind of something, is it really the on-air personality that is the problem?

Did anybody see anything in the news about this before now?  Was this 'infraction' a national crisis ala Don Imus that led to the termination?  Nope!  Hmmmmm..... makes you wonder.

I'm not saying CBS Radio senior management aren't just cashing in lottery paychecks, but I tell you what, it wouldn't take 3 months for my boss' boss to know I was up to no good.

I really don't think Preston and Steve WANT to be syndicated. Their show is VERY tailored to Philadelphia and connect very well with the listeners. Trying to pull Philadelphia humor in say, Chicago, probably wouldn't work.

A valid point. However, this ultimately makes you question where things are moving. Will terrestrial radio survive as a valid medium or will it become the public access to cable television? I guess only time will tell.
