KIIS FM Vs Amp Radio

Neel Mehta said:
97.1 doesn't seem to have as great of a signal as KIIS-FM...at least east of LA. It starts to get static here in Azusa and once I reach my house in the foothills, 97.1 sounds pretty bad while KIIS-FM is still receivable. On my commute to Rancho Cucamonga on the 210, I also gets lots of static on 97.1 and on Friday, when I was trying to listen to the switchover on the way back from Wrightwood, my radio was picking up 97.1 The Point from Vegas until i got close to the 15 from the 138. KIIS also has stations in the high desert but then again, they lose it in Ventura County where 97.1 might have better coverage.

The Antilope Valley, being in the LA metro (all of LA and Orange counties) is significant for KIIS. Riverside, san Bernardino and Ventura counties are not in the metro, and any audience obtained there is pretty much useless to any LA station.

KLSX is actually nearly three times the power of KIIS, which is the third lowest powered commercial station on Mt. Wilson. KLSX has considerable signal advantages in the LA metro.

So far, I am impressed with AMP. However, it is difficult to objectively compare AMP to KIIS at this point; it is too early.

We Angelenos have been "married" to KIIS for a few decades now. KIIS is intelligent and classy and has a great personality. We have a history with KIIS, including an elder son, Rick Dees, a living legend, and a younger one, Ryan Seacrest, that may become equally legendary. LA and KIIS is a love that has withstood the test of time.

AMP is new, young and sexy. Dude, I just met the new CHR in town. Totally hot! Get this....10,000 songs in a row [insert your own analogy] yet NO boring commercials!!! [you get the point]. I sure hope AMP turns out to have a good personality [i.e., hires good personalities]. That way, it will be easier to live with the commercials, which are sure to come eventually...

...Or we could say KIIS is Madonna and AMP is Britney...

Well, When we first got our Club 95 Latino Vibe here in Phoenix playing 10,000 songs or so in a row, I remember other stations trying to beef up their amounts of music as well..

And is AMP CBS owned? If so, this is good because this means that our 101.5 JamZ probably has a better chance than I've been thinking. Also, 101.5 just broke the big announcement that they will be paying people's bills.... wonder if 104.7 Kiss FM is doing the same thing? After all, the pay your bills event, as far as I remember, all started on Kiss years back.

It seems like Amp actually started with a decent amount of music, rather than having a few songs play over and over and over and gradually increasing from there, but hopefully they wont do that thing where they start out with a lot of exciting stuff, then down the road jocks and other stuff start popping in and the playlist is dramatically shortened... which is what happened to our MOViN (and Club 95 Latino Vibe KVIB to some extent).

I wish we had an AMP. Our 104.7 Kiss FM needs competition and we need a top 40 station that actually plays some music in the morning, but the only thing is if this happened here it would also affect 101.5 JamZ and Power 98.3 because everyone is trying to sound similar to push the other out. If we had AMP, I'd just stick to AMP and 101.5 JamZ and be satisfied with those as my top 2 fav's. Some of the others are good just for when my favorite songs aren't on the other two, or for interesting mixshows. I think our Kiss would do fine with extra or direct competition because they are happily just sitting on top, while the other two seem to linger around the same area, usually one right above the other in ratings. I think Power 98.3 should go back to being "Where hip hop lives" and go back to the more urban and let JamZ just be the true rhythmic format by themselves and stop trying to focus on causing the failure of another station...

Anyway, good luck with AMP. Everything always sounds exciting in the beginning when it comes to radio stations (for those who care or have interest in radio, of course). Lets hope that this AMP turns out to be more than we were expecting.

Over on radio-locator.com it shows that KIIS has better coverage then KLSX.
KIIS coverage map: http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KIIS&service=FM&status=L&hours=U

KLSX coverage mag: http://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KLSX&service=FM&status=L&hours=U

The Radio Locator maps are clearly marked "for amusement purposes only."

Generally speaking, the usable coverage is slightly inside the innermost red contour.

But in areas like LA with severe terrain issues, only an L-R plot will really show what is happening.

KLSX is dramatically better in such a plot.

How about the service contour maps (54 dBu) on the FCC site...

KIIS:
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM295340.html

KLSX:
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM144897.html

These also show KIIS--with less ERP and a slightly lower HAAT--
having a larger coverage area.

Those are theoretical contours; the 54 is for protection, not service.

The real issue is that the stations like 97.1 and 105.9 that moved from Flint to Wilson and went directional can put any amount of signal out over the Pacific Ocean they want. If they set the LA Basin on fire in the process, the FCC does not care. The FCC does not protect ocean paths for anyone.

When you look at an L-R chart, you can see the difference. In the areas that matter, KLSX is a better signal.

The coverage of the IE is not an issue... it's not the same radio market.

David: can you link us to these mysterious L-R charts?

La_Guy: it's Mt. Wilson.

You can produce your own Longly Rice charts... the software is less than $10 k, and the data update subscription is only a couple of k a year, per chair.

Well sure...the next time I have $10-12K just laying around, I'll make a point to
bump L-R charts right up to the top of my "must buy" list. ;)

What was the last top 40 station that "revolutionized" radio? I can't think of any in the last 30+ years. All stations are the same rehash of the original formatics for top 40.

Z-100, New York, 1983? Maybe not revolutionized, but heavily influenced. Can music radio be revolutionized by today's owners and programmers?

playlist the same?
(Im from NY) to busy to listen online...

but wonders:
is the playlist - close, and just "sounds better"
on AMP?

...i mean, kiis-FM id's are soo hammered in.. not the general public,
but - - the people hear, can hear a fraction of the promo/ID
or...the two seconds of a :10 second liner, and *know* what to expect...
(ie: "slow jam/new hit/old school...etc)....

versus, AMP....
the songs "sound better"
Im serious...if you hear .....oh i dont know,
emimen "the real slim shady" on kiis...thnking , wow they played today...what's
their angle, why playing an old song, what is .......

AMP,plays it, and . . . automatically,
"wow 'what a classic' *interesting choice, they have it together!"

*example*
the hot ac station plays ________________________ / feels great at the office...(sounds Better).
if kiis/AMP played: __________________________/ might sound out of place / boring.

a song like...."get you good/shania twain" or.... . . . cant think of any / but u get the idea...
