Kimberly & Beck?

You're assuming it was "false outrage." If there are actual transgender people who were personally offended, it's not false.

If you listen to or read the story, you'd see that not only did actual people with acual TG family member(s) hear the broadcast live, but K & B actually also made fun of a local high school TG student.

This was hardly an out-of-town faux outrage scenario.

Also, let's stop confusing "freedom of speech" with "right to broadcast your speech over somebody else's radio station".

Unfortunately, if you haven't heard the broadcast, it's been taken down. There are condensed transcripts that give you an idea of what was said, but it doesn't really illustrate how awful the original broadcast was - in both content AND execution.

I'd fire them simply for doing 12 minutes of bad radio. And if you don't think that's bad radio, there's a reason you're a Small Market Guy.

I fully understand the duality of management that wants you to be "edgy", but not to the point where you offend activist groups (maybe), or especially SPONSORS. Listen to that bit, and tell me that you want YOUR commercial to run within 10 hours of that.

Not only that, but the bit shows a stunning lack of awareness to how the world has changed regarding LGBT issues - particularly in a state that recently changed its marriage rules. Is there an issue about what health care options are available to public employees? Arguably, there is. Should you single out trans-gender issues to illustrate that? Not if you don't want to bring the wrath of Elton John down on your head. Should you call out a high school kid over gender issues? Only if you're a ****ING MORON.

As I said, I'd fire them for bad judgement, and lack of awareness of the world around them. I don't honestly know their ratings, but I'd be shocked if they were good enough to survive a much smaller controversy. That bit was almost like a cry from Kimberly in particular for a summer on unemployment. Maybe she thought that she could get away with it because she's a woman. Well, THERE'S a lesson learned, right?

"...but K & B actually also made fun of a local high school TG student..."

Insert the boy who likes My Little Pony...or someone with a speech impediment...or any quality that makes a person different. And you start to see how STUPID it is to approach the topic from that angle.

I'll trust your judgment SirRox as I too tried - and failed - to listen to a clip of the show...I wanted to hear it in its original context. Remember friends...you can sit down with a news reporter for an hour long interview, scratch your nose 2-3 times and a malicious editor can take those parts out of context, edit them together and make you into a buffoon.

But as stated earlier, I've heard Barry by himself - and with an inexperienced female sidekick. From my personal (and admittedly limited) POV, he's much better by himself - at least he was in Pittsburgh in the 90's.

I have a good friend, one of many great jocks RIFfed by Clear Channel who's struggled to find something else, he oughta apply for the gig...then again, if this PD would allow TWELVE minute bits on ANY topic on a music station, I'm guessing there are bigger issues going on here besides an undisciplined AM show where at least one of the participants should've known better.

For those that had missed hearing the actual clip, here it is again:

I will say this.....as someone who is transgender and had worked in the radio industry and was let go for coming out....
Who had lost much of my blood family and friends when they had rejected me...
Who had lost many friends in the transgender community to suicide because of ignorant @$$holes like Kimberly & Beck telling them that they are "nutjobs".....
(BTW: For all of you people that agree with those two, take a look at all of the transgendered people that were murdered last year that are memorialized on the "Transgender Day Of Remembrance" website)

http://www.transgenderdor.org/memorializing-2013

I say this....

Good Effin' Riddance!!!

You can try to justify or defend these two for what they had done, but all I heard in this clip was a pair of insensitive bullies that were ranting on and on for almost 12 minutes attacking a minority that had done nothing wrong, not a damn thing, but exist!

As I understand it, sometime ago, this same duo made fun of a African-American mother who had just lost her son on the air. Again, totally inappropriate.....

If you have no talent to offer, but marginalizing other groups of people, then perhaps you shouldn't be working in the industry at all.

Awww. Cry me a river.

If I didn't like it, I don't listen again. But I don't put on some sob show about it so no one else could ever listen again.

Other people did it for you, and then Entercom made it so no one else could ever listen again. At least not on their station.

And that is something you are glad about. Absolutely pathetic.

Wow. First of all, as great a personality as Howard Stern is, this is a good example of a big negative caused by Stern: AWFUL copycats he spawned who don't have the comedic sensibility, nor apparently intelligence, but are just instead, raw grating idiots. I also don't make a distinction between the two. They both sound bush-league. What a loss to the industry. lol

By the way, you wanna get a feel for WHO talkradio's P1's are these days? Who they've decided to pander to? Take a stroll down "The Blaze's" comment section under ANY article. You'll read some of the most vile and hateful garbage. Just a dumb crowd.

Kimberly & Beck spoke their minds on how they felt about transgender people on their own free will. They were fired because of it.

You can argue with me about "Free Speech" or "First Amendment Rights" all day long, but they had to answer to Entercom's management for their actions, since that is who employed them. Entercom has already been through this very exact same thing at KRXQ Sacramento back in 2009 and I'd imagine that management was not going to go through that again.

It really "Grinds My Gears" that this has turned into that K&B hates Transgenders. It's about that the City Healthcare plan will now pay for Sexual Reassignment Surgery... which is SO WRONG it's not even funny. There are probably a 100 other necessary things that the Healthcare Policy should be paying for before it pays for an Addadictomy. And the "Nut Job" comment that Kimberly made was made after she also mentioned that the Healthcare Policy will also cover the Counseling that goes along with the Gender Reassignment Surgery. In my opinion, the comment worked as a JOKE and it made me laugh. I'm sure a lot of people Laughed as well. I especially laughed when Chris chimed in and said "Thank You Sir" to the woman caller. It may not be your cup of tea, but it was funny. People just need to lighten up and jump OFF The Bandwagon. It was just a Radio Show with an edgy topic being discussed for entertainment value. I was entertained, and I thank K&B for giving me a few laughs that day.

Maybe if their accompanying comments were actually FUNNY instead of just stupid, it would've gone over better.

I'm someone who likes Stern and Michael Savage, so I'm not looking for bland radio, but this K&B bit was just dumb. It sounded so forced. They both sounded like a couple of noobs who heard a few old shows of Stern and decided to be shocking. By the way, this is the kind of empty shock garbage that killed "hot talk" before it ever got off the ground.

That's one of the hard parts about humor: One man's joke is another man's insult. Back in the day, it was common to hear ethnic jokes. Comedians made fun of immigrants from certain countries. Not any more. Instead there are new fringe groups to pick on. That kind of humor will never be funny to everyone, and it's important to consider that when planning a bit. There are still lots of other ways to be funny, and that's what you hope a creative air talent will do...not jump on the cheap and easy joke.

That's a fair point, so I looked into it, and here's what I found in the Rochester City Paper account of the new health plan:

"To receive the benefits, employees will have to purchase an enhanced coverage plan."

So it's an extra charge, not part of basic coverage. And the employee is paying for the enhanced coverage, not taxpayers.

Lesson being: If you're gonna go off on some rant about a controversial issue, you better have your facts straight. Sadly, this doesn't apply to talkradio any longer---a format whose audience used to represent some degree of intellectualism, but now is just a big flea market with table after table of Archie Bunker.

Mel Brooks could have talked about it. It would have been funny. It would even have been funny to transgenders. And nobody would have complained.
How come Mel Brooks gets away with stuff that gets others fired, boycotted... ?

Howard could have talked about it, too. It would have been funny but not as funny. And someone would have complained, if only on general principles because their hobby is monitoring Howard and writing complaints to the commission.

Interestingly, perhaps the most egregious error on the part of K & B, is not being funny enough.
