KIOL needs a new morning show

Let me understand somethingYOu have a morning show that answers to no one but the owner of a radio station or those right under him. They have what would amount to complete control of what they want to bradcast on the air. They are an "island within a radio station". Yet, they are a horrible morning show? Could you help me with this? Seems that if they sucked that bad, or billed that low, then they would n't have the kind of control that they do have. And FYI, W&J have been in Houston for 4 and a half years.[/quote]Yes, I would be glad to help you understand. W&J do not answer to program directors, they or their lawyers deal with only the top management of the radio station. Feel free to talk to people they've worked with and for as I have for confirmation. Talk to some p.d.s and g.m.s at stations where they have worked to see what kind of team players they are. If you think that Stevens & Pruett had big egos, you can multiply that times ten for W&J--who also call themselves the radio gawds. They don't consider themselves station employees, but independent contractors not required to adhere to the same rules as the other station employees. 2 years into a 6 year contract they were fired by Clear Channel at KLOL. Yes, I said a 6 year contract. I was told this was done by CC Houston without the knowledge of the Mayes family.Understand, they do deserve considerable credit for the way that their crack legal team has been able to get them some really sweet contracts. Fired from KLOL after years of low ratings, despite billboards and station support. Then at KIOL, ratings almost invisible. You can also see that they have not earned the respect of the Houston radio community. They haven't had one good book in Houston. My bad, saying 3 years, make that 4 and a half years of FAILURE. You really don't need me to explain to you why and how radio stations make bad decisions with morning shows. C'mon man. The Houston stations that hired them thought that their Louisiana numbers would be duplicated in Houston--that didn't happen.Stevens & Pruett tried to do the Houston/New Orleans thing in the 90's and it bombed; they had to go back and focus on serving Houston. Houston and New Orleans are two different cities culturally, socially, economically, politically, geographically--neither one deserves to be shortchanged by having these guys (Rod Ryan too) serve both cities. Both cities deserve better. I'm just a radio guy and what I've written is my impression and my opinion, but I know others that share the same opinion. :-*

W&J had a gigantic set of shoes to fill. They're no S&P. Nope, not even close to Radio Gawds."The Walton and Johnson Show" is a business. They seem to conduct themselves in a business to business manner with Cumulus. Theres an old phrase about not doing something in your nest. It would be nice if they remembered that studios become closets sometimes. In my humble opinion, all morning radio shows leave much to be desired. I'd rather hear music. In the digital age, we can listen to other media when we want to hear opinions on current events or crafty bits & bites.I like them in small doses. After 23 or whatever years together, they do have a decent synergy.Albeit a tad too country for a rock station.

They are a syndicated show. Of course they’re independent contractors. As far as the answering to the program directors, they state their reasons for not being fond of certain program directors because many of them are corporate suits rather than real radio types.

What station support? Didn't see any billboards and the only commercial I ever saw featuring them was the terrible one with the random music coming out of the lady's mouth with Mr. Kenneth saying, "I just love these guys!" at the end.

You’re making it seem W&J were the only ones fired from KLOL. Except a couple producers and Wendy Miller, so was everybody else.As for making fun of Roula & Ryan well, doesn't everyone? They've poked at Dean & Rog a little too. Making fun of other DJs is not exclusive to W&J. Roula & Ryan trashed the “Latino and Proud” abomination several times. How bad do you have to be when Roula & Ryan start making fun of you?!

They did have the "to all virgins, thanks for nothing" billboard, which got them free publicity on the news.

W&J had billboard support for months on end, at least out in the suburbs and the usual places KLOL put their DJ advertising. I passed them all over the W and NW sides of town. Ditto when KIOL started, but nowadays I see more promoting of Outlaw Dave & Wendy Miller than I do W&J. I used to listen to them religiously before KLOL got yanked, but eventually got tired of their politics and dumbing down of the show. I don't know if it was the crackdown by the FCC or what, but they lost their appeal to me.

It's hard to rent spaces when a good majority of them are owned by your direct competitor.

Just a FYI..W&J are now on in Dallas...93.3 KDBN (A former Susquehanna station now Cumulus)...So that makes 7 markets they are in...(or 8 if you count BMT though they "technically" dont have a station in that market)
