KIRO-AM to go all sports

Wow. KIRO-AM goes all sports. The worst-kept secret in the history of the radio industry is now public.

About the only surprise is that they're waiting till the beginning of baseball season to flip - most on the board thought it would be sooner than that.

Well, maybe they'll be smart enough to hire Shannon Drayer and Matt Pitmann who were let go by Fisher after they lost the Mariners contract.

Good voices silenced. I hope that New York Vinnie clown goes back to NYC where he belongs, and they don't offer him another go-round.

A few things:

First, as far as local shows go KIRO should re-hire Tony Ventrella, he's worked in radio and tv doing sports in the market, he's knowledgeable, he's a veteran of Radio and TV in the market and he would be a perfect fit.

Second, as much as KJR tries to be a sports station; they should just throw in the towel and become a hot talk/sports station, i've been a KJR listener since the mid 90's and for the most part now it's half sports/half what do guys talk about. Heck, Mitch In The Morning's been doing the Bigger Dance for about a decade now so that's a step in that direction, after ESPN leaves KJR I could see 950 becoming like 970 AM in Portland, yes the station does carry some Fox Sports Radio programming but mostly it's hot talk/regular talk.

Third and last, KJR probably won't have a problem with programming during the day but nights and weekends could be a challenge. I could see KJR picking up Fox Sports Radio or Sporting News Radio for nights and weekends alhough KHHO currently carries FSR 24/7 along with Jim Rome so I wonder what would happen to them. Also, KJR or KIRO could pick up Dan Patrick and Tony Bruno's shows as well.

Again, what's with the "out with the old, in with the old" thing?

I know - let's get Tony Ventrella to do afternoon drive. To round out the all-star cast, let's get Bill O'Mara and Bob Blackburn to do a morning show team. In middays, let's bring back Linda Cohn, and in the evenings, let's do taped replays of Wayne Cody doing Sportsline.

::)

The rumor I had was that Bonneville is trying to go after another FM and/or AM to compliment their cluster. Maybe KPTK and KMCQ?

KJR-AM should be shaking in their un-challenged shoes. Someone's gonna get their *%& kicked.

Several years ago I submitted that 104.5 was going to be a Clear Channel property going all sports, and thus to nullify that tactic another local broadcast entity such as KIRO should go simulcast with sports on either of their channels and then force Clear Channel to offer up a better-signalized Funky Monkey. The problem with this is that KNDD might be on the losing end of the stick.......if you believe an improved Funky Monkey and a strong KISW will beat up on little 'ole KNDD. At least that is my prevailing thought.

Check-mate.

As I have said before why would ESPN leave KJR and go to KIRO unless KIRO promised to play more ESPN live programming, especially in day time. Anything less would be no gain for ESPN.

So that being said, you all think KJR should be shaking in their boots at the prospect of their live and local going against KIRO running syndicated national ESPN talk during the daytime?

Just wondering.

Need I repeat the Bonneville is LOOOOOOAAAAAAADDDDDEDDDDDD

Worst kept secret in Seattle radio. Will set a series of changes in motion I suspect. Clear Channel and Bonneville have no love lost for each other. The war in Phoenix was won by Clear Channel. When KTAR went FM News and KTAR-AM went sports. Clear Channel launched a strong news attack and reinforced 550 KFYI with all of their premiere talent. In the end KTAR went from number one to number ten. KFYI is now the number one station in Phoenix and outbills KTAR, according to my most recent sales figures, almost 2-1.
Expect the same battle in Seattle:

KIRO-AM: All-Sports with Mariners, Seahawks and live shows mornings, afternoons and nights. ESPN the rest of the time
KIRO-FM: News/Talk with FM signal to attract younger audience

KJR-AM: Follows lead of Clear Channel AM stations in most markets with News in AM Drive followed by Clear Channel controlled powerhouses Rush, Glenn Beck and Hannity. Much like KFYI did to KTAR in Phoenix. There is no love lost between Clear Channel and Bonneville.

KJR-AM becomes a news talk powerhouse knocking out KIRO and stripping KTTH of all their syndicated talent. Bonneville may have the money, but Clear Channel owns the top syndicated shows with Rush, Beck and now a new deal including Hannity. Game over? KIRO wins the sports battle, but the war for top news station in Seattle is just beginning. Clear Channel could win that war with good local morning drive news and Premiere talk in many markets including Phoenix and KEX in nearby Portland. They use the same model in every city and it works. They strip Bonneville's KTTH of their highest rated shows causing even more hurt for Bonneville. Bonneville didn't seem to learn from their Phoenix experience. Or have they? Time will tell.

Dont get the whole sports thang ??? Why would KIRO-AM flip to sports and go after KJR-AM's 1.5 share ??? i agree with above posts that Clear Channel won't just sit on their butts. If KJR-AM counters and gets all the good Clear channel owned talk shows it would be a frickin war between KIRO-FM and KJR-AM for the NewsTalk Title :p So what happens to KOMO or KTTH or KVI??? They ain't got the Bonneville Fm signal or dollars and they wont have the big Clear Channel shows. My vote is for one to go Classic Country which does okay and given the country powerhouses in this market could do okay :)

Kiro-am wins the sports battle but aint a sports town so who cares. Mariners suck and seahawks suck and huskies suck and cougars suck and sonics ain't here :-[ KIro may have done KJR a favor. I do agree with AQH that we need some new local sports talent if this is ever gonna do anything not a bunch of old retreads. The Fm dial is full of retreads like Rivers, Ichabod, kent and alan nad tony thomas. New station should bring in new blood 8) Look at the success of WOLF or MOVin in recent books to prove the ole point 8)

Floradora...seems like you don't like Vinnie. I go the other way on him. He's a fan, does good interviews, treats it all like its supposed to be fun not the end of the world and is passionate. He has a wealth of baseball knowledge and did a great post game show when he did the Mariners back in the day. Might not be the most polished broadcaster in the world but he brings heart and soul to his work.

Not to mention the guy did a lot to help save baseball in this town back when many were content to see the Mariners leave.

Maybe KIRO ought to put him back together with Michael Knight. When they were partnered up mornings on KJR it was a pretty funny show without all of the crap you hear on KJR today.

I vote for him to be a part of the new era at KIRO!

Calabro and John Clayton would be great as some part of it as well. Pittman is a good update guy as is Glasgow.

Lots of intriguing possibilities.

I would think someone may be interested in grabbing Storm rights. I know for a fact the team ownership not crazy about the signal they have now...and with Sonix gone these folks have a real shot at securing some interest in this market. Add to that their goal is to be family-friendly with AFFORDABLE major league sports tickets...and it opens the door for someone to get those rights and it becomes a win-win partnership as that team becomes our pro team (even though Mayor Nick seems to think he'll be granted a brand new NBA franchise for Xmas). May not work on KIRO or KJR because they won't have the same male-dominated fan base...but there IS an opportunity for something more aggressive than 1150.

Of course this news is a cause of great excitement for Doris Monson. I hear she's trying to taking his jock-sniffing up a notch. Now she can sit with even more true athletes and yuk it up, smoke cigars and feel like a true woman.

If KIRO were to get the Storm, what joy - Doris can yabber about her precious girls EVEN MORE! Something to look forward to!

I see both sides of Vinnie. He's passionate and emotional but that NYC accent is a bit much. This is Seattle, dude.

even with KIRO Going all Sports. doesnt automatically means clear channels dumps KJR's all sports format to steal the news/talk audience. I think KJR will stay all sports they got a heritage local talent while im sure ESPN has a gaurentee to have Mike and Mike and Tirico/Van Pelt and On None Mariners night games Game Night cleared on Kiro. 2 shows most espn affiliates must carry is M&M and T/VP for new affiliates to the ESPN Family. Unlike KJR they got an exemption i think on carrying M&M and T/VP due to the fact that they joined up with ESPN in the early days of ESPN Radio when it was just on weekend Nights. Here in Indy when WIBC Went to FM so it could clear 1070 for all Sports they air mostly ESPN Programming outside of a local Mid Morning and Local Afternoon Drive show along with Colts/Pacers programming. while the the former ESPN Home XL950 had to go Hot talk in the morning and Dan Patrick, Sporting news Radio most of the Day and a local afternoon drive. WNDE the 3rd and original All Sports station carrys Fox Sports and A Local Afternoon Drive

Just to set the record straight. KTAR FM posted it's best ratings in 4 years in the last book. #8 A25-54 compared to KFYI's #14.
KTAR-FM had the most listeners of any morning show in Arizona... #1 cume 12+. In the 5-8:30am slot, KTAR-FM and KTAR-AM both beat the second place news/talk station in A25-54 and M25-54. For the first time since the summer of 2002, KTAR-FM is #1 in news/talk in the 8-10am timeslot. KTAR-FM is top rated news/talk station in pm drive for the third book in a row.
Also, as of the end of last month, KTAR FM was the #1 local revenue generating station in the market for the year.

Should KJR be shaking . well, ESPN syndicated shows have been winning L.A. and Chicago mornings for most of the last two years, against major market local shows. Take it for what its worth.
KJR has been sloppy for some time. It often sounds very tired and predictable. KIRO will have major cume numbers, with Mariner baseball starting in April. Plus, Seattle sports are so pathetic, there is no absolute need to hear local programming. Why ? To hear Sonic playoff updates. oops, they left.
Should be interesting. No idea how it plays out. But competition usually benefits the listener, so have at it boys.

You know, a few weeks ago I thought about KJR's reaction to this would be and there would be no greater revenge than to yank Limbaugh off 770 and put him on KJR. Limbaugh is KTTH's bread and butter and when he's gone, it will take KTTH YEARS - if EVER to recover (KVI just barely made it.) Most former Limbaugh affiliates sink like a rock once he's gone.

And Premiere can slap KVI around one more time and yank Coast To Coast and put it on 950 too. It actually might be better because unless you're really close to the water outside of Seattle in North Puget Sound, KVI's signal is CRAP. Most people in Mount Vernon listen to KEX or KFBK for their George Noory/Art Bell fix because KVI's signal is so bad.

Bordeaux, I think you're sampling a little too much of your namesake. KSPN is in the lower third of ratings in LA, I think OCT PPM has them skyrocketing to a a 1.3. They do a little better in share mornings, but they are far, far from "winning" anything.

As for KJR or KIRO-AM -- the answer is not canned talent from anywhere. Local is better but what's most important is they be ENTERTAINING. Frankly I'm surprised KIRO wants to telegraph moves planned for April.
