KIRO moving and shaking up the mornings?

Yup..heard Maura yesterday. Good move. It seems like B'ville is bringing back some old school. Now, if they can just get Jim French out of retirement..(Kidding!!).

I just wathced Maura Gallucci do the news, with a few clicks of the mouse no less. No cart machines at all. She said she is now a full time employee, talking to Dori on the air.
Holy crap is KIRO's new studio (size/layout) impressive? I just turned on the web cam. Where did they fit that in that building? Someone says 710 ESPN Seattle is getting the same treatment, good on them.

Stations down south have nothing so spiffy.

Just out of curiosity, why the change from "News Talk 97.3" to "KIRO Radio"? Ratings look fairly steady, way ahead of KOMO. KIRO is #3 in 6+, very good for a news/talk station in any market. How did KIRO do in 25-54, the money demo?

Now that John Curley is doing the morning show, who took his place at night? The station website shows "KIRO Radio at Night". No host is listed. Is it local or a placeholder for syndication?

Again, just curious. Thanks! :)

KIRO is not a "news-talk" station. They don't even call themselves that anymore. They engage in dumbed-down talk (and are getting good ratings.) KIRO and KOMO are now different formats, except that they utilize the spoken word.

KIRO-FM and KOMO both suffer in the 25-54 money demo, which I suppose is why both stations are changing. KOMO, got rid of its talk shows mid-day and now does news around the clock. KIRO-FM jettisoned their morning news block, though it is still called "news", and is doing talk/entertainment radio. KIRO-FM appears to be trying to draw audience from Bob Rivers, KUOW, BJ Shea, Kent and Alan and recently Danny B at KZOK. all who dominate 25-54 morning radio ratings. Except for Kent and Alan and BJ Shea who play a bit of music, the rest are all talk.

I think Curley is entertaining and did well at night. In the morning there are MANY more choices in the talk/entertainment/news arena. KIRO-FM has decided to enter that game. Tough battle. When news, weather, traffic become important during the winter months KOMO may be the big winner here. The actual talk that is winning right now is KIRO-AM, which is top five in adult demos and top two in male demo's and during 6-7p dayparts Mon-Fri.

I agree that Curley was great at night and that it was the perfect time slot for him as it gave him the freedom to expose his eclectic personality. The morning time slot with all the interruptions of needless traffic reports and the same weather report over and over again may prevent him from unleashing his talent. Having said that, Bob Rivers better watch out. I think his show is starting to drag as some of the newcomers on his show are trying to dominate it. I for one will switch from being a loyal Bob Rivers fan to see if Curley can make it happen.

your analysis is spot on, on all points! nope, i never did catch the john curley evening broadcast. in fact, i have little knowledge much beyond the fact that i know who he is. the morning broadcasts on KIRO are fresh, uncluttered, unrushed, and uncontrived. curley, makes the whole show work as the hub the spokes are hooked up to. i dont like much in the corporate radio world of mediocrity and predictability. but, it seems this team is a winner! im actually listening and liking!

John Curley is an excellent choice. Natural talent.
yep, seems so

Curley sounds good so far. The two person C.R. that Robin and Maynard (among others) really perfected dove-tailed right into the 3,4 person morning show that Rivers has done with such success. Why? You need a damn good traffic cop in the middle of it all to keep it moving, under control and interesting. As well, not letting your crowd all hog the mic and try for superstar status. A balanced attack. To do all that and provide a bit of actual news, info entertainment and fun chatter and dialog takes a leader who has to be totally on mark at all times. We saw what didnt work at KIRO in the mornings. If Curley can keep himself in check, Bonneville may have some long term Applebees dollars to enjoy.

Less than 12 days into the morning show and Curley's already called in sick. And on election day no less.

Sorry, but I don't want my news covered with confetti. Bill Radke had the perfect balance between personality and straightforward delivery, for my taste. And a masterful sense of humor, that didn't get in the way of credibility, and felt like a good match with the other hosts. On the other hand, John Curley, on TV and on the radio, comes across as a paid-for hack and an intellectual lightweight. A jock, in other words. Not a newsman, nor really even a good host, since he gets in the way of what the content is, believing the "camera shot" is all about him. Sure, he's loose and comfortable with a mic. But that's not the kind of loose I'm looking for in the busy morning hours. Maybe as a semi-smart aleck during happy hour. But not in morning drive, please.

Wonderfully said. I feel EXACTLY the same way. I am in the car from 5:30am - 6:45am. The day John Curley took over mornings, I went from listening to KIRO in the car to an iPod now. I don't even turn the radio on any longer. I am one of those people that made the jump from radio to my iPod.

Is anyone going to send John Curley one of those tiny sound files with the correct pronunciation of Tom Tangney?

TANGney not Tagney.

Jeez, it's like Pres. Bush pronouncing "nu-cu-lar". It shows sloppiness of mind.

As I've said, will Curly implode or settle in as something more than an entertainment bit on morning radio? Forget about the argument of who was better or who wasn't. Anyone that has a little P/L biz sense knows that who ever sells more refrigerators and captures the Les Schwab sponsorship will win every time. Otherwise, there's always NPR.
