KIRO's NEW PD

Back in April, I pondered whether bringing in Arquette would make Bonneville more conservative. Well, Glenn Beck is conservative. (But so was Savage). The difference is Beck's program is more entertaining, less angry, and I truely think will help KTTH in the end. Medved is interesting, but a bit too intellectually draining for many around the country, perhaps not Seattle. KTTH is a very nice compliment to KIRO...a nice AM combo to have. (Plus, anyone remember what 770 used to be?...didn't think so!)

KXA was one of the first stations in town ... for a long time their "stick" was the wire that spanned across the two towers on the JC Penney Bldg (now Newmark, I believe) on 2nd ave. They were broadcasting from a plaza at the corner of 2nd & University Sts. They were essentially a full-service (variety) station, featured in the PUGET SOUNDS book (by David Richardson). He started his radio career there.

In recent years they had been a classical station ... then Pat O'Day bought it and turned it into "Old Gold 77 KXA" as an AM counterpart to KYYX (which was ironically located only a block up the road at 3rd & University ... roughly where the lobby upper balcony exists now at Benaroya Hall). In mid 80's it went to Olympic, which I believe was run by Ivan Braiker at that point ... went through a couple of format iterations along the way (including another run as KULL gold from the bird). Mid 90's it goes through Heritage and then Bonneville...becoming KNWX...then to Entercom eventually becoming KTTH ... and back to Bonneville.

One of the things that kept getting in their way was having to protect 77/WABC New York, just as 1250 had bigger headaches trying to protect KWSU out of Pullman. I believe both of those restrictions are gone...though 1250 still runs a night pattern from different tower (in Kirkland).

I do find it pretty funny that 770/1090 (conservative and liberal talkers) have to share a stick on Vashon.

Another intersting note. KIRO broadast form that Dipole antenna on 2nd Ave till 1941, when they moved to Vashon. Then KXA moved in and used it for their transmitter site till they moved to west seattle and then to Maury Island just a short distance from where KIRO is now.

Good job guys on 770! Bottom line, it was an under-utilized frequency that is just now starting to reap the benefits! "Old Gold 770"...now there is a memory (albeit brief memory!)...of a little piece of Sea radio history!

Weren't Old Gold 770's call letters KOOL? That was a good oldies station by the way.

KXA.

KOOL has always been in Phoenix.

Back to the discussion about KIRO, on Monson’s show the other day, he put a listener on the air after a long 8 minute news/spot break and the caller’s first words were something to the effect of "boy, those are long commercials." Dori said it was worth the wait wasn’t it, then later referred back to the long break and said big changes are coming to KIRO and you’ll love them, his comments coming after he was part of a station staff meeting that day. Any ideas about these ‘big changes?’

I try to avoid being party of "catty" discussions here, but in this case I can only hope HE is one of those "big changes". I don't mind when talk hosts take a different position than I do as it's fun to listen; but I just feel that DM is kind of "winging it" and .... how shall I put this .... "not likely to be a returning finalist on Jeopardy".

They were KULL for awhile (when doing the Unistar syndication) ... but that was a second life as "oldies" long after the "old gold 77 KXA" days.
