In my opinion, KC101's processing sounds bad. Their processing has always been stuffy, but at least with pitch it sounded alright. Ever since KCI has removed pitch, they've been removed from my presets. Hot 93-7's does as well... it was great until a couple of weeks ago. CHR/Pop and Rhythmic are formats that you need to pitch the music. Even Hot AC and AC. Maybe to you, the music sounds awful pitched up - but a bunch of 30 year old dudes aren't the demographic. Ask any girl in the 18-34 demographic in Connecticut, play them the same song on KCI and the same song on KSS and they'll tell you it's boring on KCI. Why do I know? I've tried it myself. Music is boring without pitch to girls, and to anyone with any kind of CHR background. Pitch makes songs sound so much better... And no matter what my feelings are about WKSS, I'm not going to deny that their processing and pitch are kick-ass. It's around 3 percent, and it sounds really good. KC101's processing sounds like an AM station. TIC-FM has a good 2 or so percent pitch as well.
...but no sweepers, voiceovers, jingles
what's up with that?
Good point though, I'm not in the Kiss demographic. But, hey if they sounded good, the may have more listeners!!
It's a Clear Channel thing across a lot of their CHRs right now. Check out WAKS in Cleveland, WFKS in Jacksonville, among others that are doing the same thing. A lot of dead segues, etc.
And as far as processing goes - I see and understand what you guys are all talking about as far as less pitch. I just think it's a tradition of CHR (in the mid 90s, WXKS sped up their songs as much as 5%) and it sounds great. I also think pitch is important on CHR with songs that are burnt or burning - I think it decreases the likelihood of the listener changing the station to find a better song if it sounds "hotter". That's just my two cents though.
Radio is still viable to people in my age demographic - and it's not as bad as people think it is. Granted, a lot of us have iPods and etc. But radio is still viable - don't count it all out yet.
