KISW's 50th Birthday Celebration Starts Feb. 12

Now that's longevity..

50 years without a major format change is quite an achievement. Congrats! It should be noted that KISW as a radio station just passed its 71st year this January.

Heh, I was about to post this. I've been listening since 1980 and it's always been my P1 station on every radio since my first digital car stereo in about 1986. Can't say I'm fond of some of the shows but still listen to Taryn's 12-pack most nights.

The promos note that Slaton, (Jon) Ballard and Crow & West are going to be on plus "special guests." Hope to hear Cathy Faulkner and of course R&M. ;) Was Vanderpool ever on KISW?

It's awesome to see a radio station stay around this long with the same format, and STILL be one of the best stations in the market. They've certainly been able to find the right balance of music, with select classic rock tracks and the best of modern rock as well. Not to mention, they've programmed the station with great local talent all day long. I've traditionally been a KZOK listener, but have found myself listening to KISW more and more as of late. What a neat legacy.

Including one of the few to have an announcer die while working a shift....
and the sad part is no one really noticed enough to call the police.
(This when they were classical and still up on Roosevelt...._)

This has happened more than a few times. A friend was PD in a medium market country station, and at about 5:50 he got a call from the morning guy saying that the overnight man had died. "Have you called 9-1-1?" he asked. "Yes". "Then push him in the chair to the doorway and play the music. And don't say anything about it on the air out or respect for the family."

That is a tough decision... and my friend felt bad about it for years, but there was no alternative. And I asked myself what I would have done...

Vanderpool was afternoon DJ on KISW (possibly weekends? maybe during the weekdays?) during the very late 1990's or very early 2000's some time. I remember hearing him on my car stereo, and this was before my stereo blew out, and I never listened to KZOK so it had to be KISW.

.......that was probably KXRX. He did the 10pm-2am Monday through Friday and fill in shifts.

^^^^ I know Vanderpool did the Sunday night new release music show on KISW 1999-2001 or thereabouts. It was right before Damon Stewart's new music show.

KISW was not the only Seattle station that flipped to progressive this week in 1971. When word got out that classical KISW was going to flip, 94.1 KOL-FM flipped from progressive nights/AM simulcast days to full-time progressive. KOL-FM actually beat KISW in the first few books after their flips, but KISW pulled ahead. The arrival of KZOK helped squeeze KOL-FM, which flipped to easy listening in 1975.

Congratulations KISW for 50 years, Happy Birthday from Detroit. We have a 50 year Birthday for our very own WRIF on February 14th. Again congratulations.

I was hoping they would have segments on their webpage. I'll check it out. Thanks.
i have most all of the broadcast. Editing them now. I did not get any of the stuff durning BJ and Miggs. Most all of Castle, Got the men's room and Taryn. I did get some of the replay from Sat and Sunday. Probably will post on Soundcloud.

Thanks. I kept catching Slaton, Faulkner and others. Really looking forward to Crow & West.
