KIYS

Rather continue to be off topic in the Ben Ferguson thread, I thought I'd bring the KIYS discussion to its own place.

DeadElvis is getting word that the KIYS move to the Memphis metro is nearing completion. The station will be relicensed to Crawfordsville, AR and transmit from one of the KWAM sticks.

After reading through some old threads, some questions have popped up. Namely, CC's ownership limit. Talk a few years ago was that CC already owned the maximum number of stations in Memphis. Is that still the case?

If they are somehow able to keep it, it may have some potential as either the FM outlet for WREC or a country competitor to Kix. But if not… K-Love, perhaps?

Now that it's been a few years since KIYS was last discussed, what do you folks think could be done with this facility, in this economic climate?

There isn't much difference in how the signals of the new 101.9 and the 95.7 cover the city.

Corodva, Germantown, Collierville, and Olive Branch are all outside of the 60db contour. Unless they want to try and flank Kix and make their other stations look better. I don't think that worked so well for WOGY here in the past. WOGY had a better signal in key areas than 101.9 will have. Would CC settle for a country station with a 2 share?

I don't think they would try CHR. That pie is being sliced to many times now. 107.5 has a better signal in the more important places where 101.9 would be lacking.

You have to program to the people who can pick you up and do it better than anyone else. That is why both class A 107s in town hold their own against some big signals. Several of the big signals in town don't even try anymore.

Also the performance of 98.9 is something to consider. It has never achieved any sizable ratings outside of the smooth jazz format (which was probably tough to sell). It has a full market signal and has failed.

The urban formats are all well represented in town and Clear Channel is on top with them already. I am not sure if they would put something on 101.9 to try and flank WRBO and risk hurting WDIA and KJMS in the process.

It would complement WREC well but will not work well on clock radios and inside offices in the areas listed above. That would be a cheap option for operating the station. Will that really give clear channel much ROI. I don't think WREC is going to double it's billing by added an FM simulcast.

So what am I saying? I think it will simulcast WREC or do something Urban.
