KKAM Lubbock is now "The Fan"

Some time yesterday, they started calling themselves "The Fan." This seems hastely done, they do not even have a new logo on their website yet. And, I noticed they are not including the dial position in the name, it's just "The Fan." So I wonder if the plan is to move "The Fan" to another frequency, or even FM to compete with Double T.

just my opinion, but there is not enough possible revenue to move sports to an FM, especially since they will not have TT, and they've never made money or ratings on the format and FM wouldn't help much. but, news talk on FM....? many are doing it.

This FAN thing.... this CAN'T be based on the new sports station also called THE FAN in Dallas, could it? From what I have been reading and from what I have been told by friends in DFW that station is horrible. However, those are just opinions. Just curious.

Except for maybe KOHM, we will NEVER see an HD station in Lubbock.
Two Reasons:
1. It's too expensive;
2. It doesn't work well enough to justify reason number 1.

You'll be able to plug-in your Ford before IBOC ever comes to Lubbock.

Haha yeah. I was being sarcastic. I know it will never come to Lubbock. GAP was smart for not investing in the technology.

But anyway. Why would KKAM start naming themselves after a station in Dallas that has been described by many so far, as a "complete failure?"

Well you have my curiosity peaked now- what do you mean by "doesn't work well enough"?

And HD Radio (IBOC) HAS come to Lubbock thank you very much. I'm quite happy to show you Lubbock's first HD rig.

Although I do agree- I doubt any other Lubbock stations will go HD anytime soon. Most are having enough problems keeping their current analog operations going, let alone willing to expand with more offerings in digital. And yes, it is very expensive but was the right choice for us to offer more programming. I am also surprised at the number of folks willing to pony up for a new HD Radio too. But that's another topic.

And as for KKAM, well, is it really that surprising? Just when I thought they made the dumbest move ever- they go and top it.

I thought moving pro sports off KFYO in the mid-90s was their first mistake, followed by many many others later on.

KOHM does a good job with HD radio, I'd say better than some of the offerings in Dallas. I got a good deal on an HD radio in Dallas, probably since several stations offer that programming there.

As for KKAM, I hope the new station starts up soon on 104.3. I'm a big fan of The Herd. I assume that they'll carry it, being an ESPN affiliate. I tried hour three of "The Jungle" today. Now I remember why I remembered to never switch over during the afternoons the last time KKAM had that show. Just crap.

DG is right. Tech Football on KFYO was something to be proud of, because I could visit relatives all over the region and always pick up Jack Dale's call. That group was dumb at the time to put the games on KKAM. And of all games to call KFYO home, they went with Lady Raider basketball.

I heard a few weeks ago at the end of The Herd an identifier that said it's the station "with all the balls". Sounds like the guy with the monster truck, 4x4, with large mud flaps and loud exhaust. You know what I mean. That station couldn't be sounding worse. They had me for about two hours a day, and now I guess it'll be zero. The only things they have going for them is Tech Baseball and that the new sports station isn't on yet.

Yeah, from what I've read elsewhere on the board, HD radio does not travel well. In San Diego, for example, it is a disaster, since, just like with HD TV, you need to get a full signal all the time for it to work. So if you are driving up and down the 5 where signals peak and dip because of the topography, HD has trouble in the car, and has trouble being received in certain areas. From what I understand, you would need more power to create an impenatrable solid signal. Then there is the trouble on AM where the HD carriage causes hash that interferes with co-channel located frequencies. Add to that, the big box stores like Target and Walmart do not really have many receivers, are not knowledgeable on them, and the ones they do have are prohibitively priced. And why buy one when HD radio isn't in smaller cities like Lubbock?

That's what I meant by "they don't really work properly."

That said, Lubbock radio stations don't even give scrolling music titles through RDS, nevermind HD...

I know we are off topic a little bit here, but I remember I started a thread regarding Lubbock RDS a long time ago. It always surprised me that none of the stations out here did that. It's one of the things that bugs me about this market. Me being from Dallas, I'm always used to seeing what song is playing on my stereo. I have made trips to small markets like Waco and College Station and nearly all their stations scroll information (and KNDE - College Station is planning on going HD...). In Midland, a few of their stations scroll information as well.

Do you think any station around here will ever jump on the bandwagon and start scrolling information? It is more important for a station to focus on content rather than RDS content, I suppose. But it would still be cool if a station out here started doing that.

Geez! KKAM DIDN'T rename themselves after a station in Dallas! C'mon...Why make mountains out of mole hills? It's simply a new coat of paint on an old house.

Neither did Z102!

And KKAM is a condemned old house that needs to be demolished IMNSHO.

We shall see if the new KTTU fares any better.

Well, let's see...
The AM sports station that doesn't carry any sports teams, or the FM Sports station that nobody can get?
It's a race to the bottom!

By the way, I agree with BVG. One of my biggest pet peeves has always been that KKAM didn't have an actual name, just "SportsRadio." That's not a name, imho. At one time, I thought we were going to be XtraSports 1340 since many of the other stations in the chain were doing that. The FAN works too, I just wonder if its too late now. Perhaps they are planning on going after the Cowboys or Texans? Astros?

Arena football?

Any what would you do with 1340?

BTW, how's that silent 88.1 coming along? I'm sure there are a lot of people that like listening to dead air.

I'd put JACK on it! That certainly wouldn't do any worse than what will be left on it soon.

Pulling TTU sports off 790 years ago was a mistake. Pulling the remaining sports off of KFYO after the buyout was even worse. They should have done the exact opposite- put the sports on the most powerful AM station in the market, so at least they would cover the largest audience possible. Instead, they chose a very weak, crappy AM signal that barely covers Lubbock County. I thought it hilarious that I could hear Red Raider football BETTER on FMX or wherever the few times it was found on the FM side.

And that silent 88.1 is coming along just great! KTXT never sounded so good. There are certainly more people listening to it now than ever did last Fall.

And for the record there's no dead-air on 88.1. There's NO AIR on 88.1.

At least when there's dead-air on KOHM it's in stereo (ha!).

I do happen to know the difference between dead-air and off-air.

Evidently you do not.

Worry not however. I'm thinking 24 hours of Barbie girl with some Weird Al thrown in when I fire it back up.

The NEW COAT OF PAINT KKAM used... was the same NEW COAT that was just recently used in DALLAS. *** Insert Evil Laugh Here *** They must shop at the same paint store. *** Insert an even bigger Evil Laugh Here ***

Seriously though, yes maybe it's just a coincidence... however, it just seems strange that a new sports station that's in DALLAS (of course, the location of GAP CORP. OFFICE) pops up by the name of THE FAN... and a few weeks later, give or take, KKAM renames it's self... THE FAN?

With that being said... seeing that THE FAN in Dallas is the OFFICIAL HOME OF THE DALLAS COWGIRLS... would that mean that there could be a possibility of THE FAN in Lubbock caring those games? I apologize for my ignorance regarding who carries the COWGIRLS here in Lubbock. I never listened to their games.

Tech sports was never pulled off of KFYO...like KKAM in this day and age vs KTTU, the contract was lost by KFYO and won by KKAM/KFMX. Yes, the six radio stations that GAP ownes have not always been together.

You are correct BVG...poor word choice on my part.

I was around the Copy Craft Building back in those days, and they DID PULL the pro sports off of KFYO after the buyout.

The only logical move I kept up with since my glorious days with Gulfstar was when they moved Limbaugh to 790. That actually made sense.

But I've yet to see the logic in so many other changes they made, pro sports being one of them.
