He is the last man in town that does.
What about 102.3 KJLH?
He is the last man in town that does.
Is Stevie Wonder still really involved with the station? If so, does he really show the level of independent thinking and chance taking that Saul does? (These are real and not rhetorical questions, I haven't listened to the station since the 80s).What about 102.3 KJLH?
What I wrote is mathematically true for all situations, wherever, whenever. Anything times zero equals zero. But I was specifically replying to David's comment about licensing costs:Does it have to? Has it ever?
We have been through this so many times. If the owner's intent is to have a toy with which to play and not to make money, then he can do whatever he wants, play whatever he wants, and change it up whenever he wants, and, guess what, money is no object. The number of listeners are of little or no concern as well.
Meet Mr. Saul Levine, who, unlike mega-corporate owned "Jack", really does play what he wants. He is the last man in town that does.
He's discussing ASCAP and BMI (and possibly a couple of more minor players), those costs. AFAIK, they're a percentage of revenue. So my point was that when a subchannel has no discernible revenue, those costs aren't likely to be a consideration in whether or not to do a stunt.Even with music licensing there is not going to be a difference as the Author/Composer fees are not based on songs but on percentages of revenue and a few other considerations.
The previous programming on the HD3 signal consisted of a lot of recordings that were mono anyway, so it didn’t really matter. It should be noted that for those interested, unlike HD-1, HD-2, and, HD-4. the 105.1 HD-3 channel has always been MONO regardless of the format. Just checked with headphones and Taylor Swift "channel" is indeed mono. Country, Classical, and Oldies still in Stereo.
True, however in the recent past HD-3 was used to simulcast KKJZ 88.1, so it was a disappointment that the simulcast was in mono. The previous programming on the HD3 signal consisted of a lot of recordings that were mono anyway, so it didn’t really matter.
I think so many Taylor Swift fans tuned in that it crashed the broadcast. If you think that is crazy, you should see the ticket prices! As of the morning of August 5th, the Taylor Swift format on KKGO HD3 has gone silent.
Technical glitch? Or did they just realize it was a mistake?
The tour is reported to have passed $1.5 billion in ticket sales, and is working on the dates and venues for Europe, Latin America and Asia. This could be a $3 billion dollar tour.I think so many Taylor Swift fans tuned in that it crashed the broadcast. If you think that is crazy, you should see the ticket prices!
Does that amount include the "secondary" market? If not the total could be two, three maybe even four times that amount. AMAZING!The tour is reported to have passed $1.5 billion in ticket sales, and is working on the dates and venues for Europe, Latin America and Asia. This could be a $3 billion dollar tour.
No, that is just ticket sales. But you are absolutely right that the ticket is not the only "spend" by attendees. There is travel for many attendees, and that includes car use and expense, air travel, Uber costs, lodging and local food and beverages, as well as souvenirs, T-shirts and other apparel. Even parking at the venue. Huge.Does that amount include the "secondary" market? If not the total could be two, three maybe even four times that amount. AMAZING!

How many Canadian markets could do the kind of crowd needed? Vancouver, Toronto, maybe Ottawa. Montreal, being mostly Francophone, is questionable. Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary may be too small. And nothing big enough in the Maritimes.Which is why the Canadian prime minister appealed for Taylor to bring her tour to his country:

Trudeau to Taylor Swift: Don't make it a cruel summer and come to Canada
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to Twitter to try to convince American pop star Taylor Swift to add some stops on her "Eras Tour" in Canada after she announced 14 new dates in Europe.www.reuters.com

That is not unusual for the area of my experience which is Latin America. At one time in the earlier 70's I programmed an FM in Lima and out of 21 or 22 FM stations, about 17 had entirely English language music, ranging from Top 40 to AC to several blends of rock. The amazing thing about Taylor is her music is not limited to English-speakers.
Doesn't Saul own k jazz?Getting this thread back on topic, I discovered yesterday afternoon that the all-Taylor Swift stunting on 105.1 HD3 has ended and the subchannel now carries K-Jazz. Meanwhile, KKJZ-FM 88.1 appears to be off the air, because when I tuned to that station I heard nothing but static. I wonder what’s going on there.
KKJZ is actually owned by California State University Long Beach. They have a management agreement with Saul’s son Michael, sort of like an LMA in commercial radio.Doesn't Saul own k jazz?
ThanksI think we need to be more clear. The KKJZ management contract is with a company called Global Jazz. Global Jazz's parent company is Mt. Wilson FM Broadcasters. Saul Levine owns both.
Michael Levine is General Manager and Program Director at KKGO.
Stephanie Levine, Saul's daughter, is General Counsel for KKGO, but she is Station Manager for KKJZ. Saul is listed as General Manager and Michael as Director of Underwriting.
The KKJZ studios moved off the Cal State Long Beach campus to the KKGO studios in Westwood (on Cotner Avenue, next to the 405, just north of the 10) in 2015.
