KKSF joining a band?

Mornings....Hhhmmmmm Cammy Blackstone and Ron Parker? Dave Sholin?
Mid Day.... Sue Hall?
Afternoons.... JoJo Kincaid?
Evenings.... Sylvia Chacon?
Overnights.... Dean Goss?

Now that would be getting 'the band' (back) together!

Hey, dude, how's this -

Dave Sholin & Cammy Blackstone - San Francisco
Ron Parker - New York

That way, BOTH coasts are covered... :)

I haven't stopped laughing my a-- off since I read the "market research told us to do this" line. They think we're pretty stupid, don't they.

But yeah, we needed a station that will play Styx.

Unfortunately, not a chance of this happening. This is a classic ROCK station. Based on the vibe of the imaging, we're looking at a station that see it's competition as The Bone, K-Fog and ironically, CC's own KUFX, in San Jose. Unfortunately, the air talent listed above are far too pop for where this thing is going...perhaps any old KRQR-type folks still around? Jon Russell is over at CBS....

Good job, KKSF. You went from being a station with an identity and personality to just another throw-away station doing what everyone else is doing. What a bunch of short-sighted, knee-jerk, no-vision bunch of crap. You're now on borrowed time.

KCSM should see better ratings now (and deservedly so).

I look at it as just one more reason to love Clear Channel Communications! They are great! ::)

KKSF you had a good thing going for awhile.

Perhaps the abrupt nature of the format flip might have been a factor, but I must say, this format flip must have had the least activity ever!

I agree with most of the above comments. The music mix was pleasant enough when I was listening - about 6:00 last night for a half-hour or so - very much like 95.7 The Drive before they got panicky and added in more hits.

I can't see this setting the world on fire. As for jocks - wasn't the smooth jazz format entirely voice-tracked toward the end? The same will be true with The Band - or they'll just go entirely jock-less. Maybe they'll throw in some snarky liners, a la "Jack."

Yes, it does seem like the statement on the website should be -"after extensive research, we've decided to do what's been done before...maybe this time it won't fail."

Well, they went from a dull format to a boring one. Seriously... SF needed a FOURTH FM rock station? The Bone has been tweaking itself lately -- adding "WTF?" tracks like the long versions of "Inna Gadda Da Vida" and (gawd help us) "Freebird"; I guess that was in anticipation of the KKSF switch? KFOG just has to use this as an excuse to go younger, doesn't it? Especially now that Dave Morey's gone? No more 1968 10@10s, I betcha.

same thing happened in NY, where 101.9 dumped smooth jazz for a rock format that is struggling badly.

KKSF's demise explains why I heard "Green Grass and High Tides," on The Bone Sunday, a very "WTF" eye-popper no station plays anymore...that is, until Sunday.

In its day, the Outlaws tune--at 20 minutes--was a good bathroom song that allowed for non-rushed relief. But with voice-tracking, I guess a computer can just re-boot and check itself while "Green Grass" trolls on.

The Bone has been playing the long, live version of Freebird for years. And Green Grass and Inna Gadda Da Vida have been played occasionally long before KKSF flipped to Classic Hits. Neither the Bone or KFOG was adjusting their playlist last week in anticipation of KKSF changing formats. It might mean that fewer commercials means longer songs get played more often. And why would KFOG "go younger" just because KKSF wants to play Credence Clearwater Revival?

Is this one of the formats that the trades have said are being programmed remotely? If so, it would be one of the biggest markets they have to go that direction.

KFOG has been walking a tightrope for years; it's one of your older-skewing Triple-A's. It has wanted to attract younger demos without completely alienating the loyal older "Fogheads" who've stuck with it for years, even tho' it's become boring as [bleep].

With the departures of the 2 Daves (Morey & Benson), what better time for them to tweak things? There has to be a point at which segue-ing from Green Day to "Like a Rolling Stone" becomes untenable, but they continue to play both ends against the middle. Triple-A is a painfully dull format: Coldplay + 6 guys who sound like Jason Mraz + 17 Feist-alikes, sprinkled with "Classic" chestnuts. Why continue to spin "Killer Queen" and "Rocket Man" 3 times a day when 2 other stations in town are doing likewise? Somethings gotta give.

Meanwhile, what makes Cheap Channel think "The Band" is going to do any better than the late unlamented "Max" or the failed reboot of KFRC?

Wow! The Bay Area used to be a premier radio market??

Clear Channel's idiotic move leaves a huge hole in the market.

A station like The Wolf or Alice would do well to jump in right now with a "Smooth AC/Jazz" type of hybrid. Kind of like what The Wave is doing in L.A.

Why let KOIT, which is enormously boring, ride the AC ratings wave, uncontested? Someone has got to see this??

For now, what a loss for the Bay Area!

The infamously side-long Iron Butterrfly and Outlaws’ tunes must be heavily day-parted on the Bone because I’ve never heard them get airplay in the past 10 years on any terrestrial station. Even when I’m commuting to work in the middle of the night—4am—I still hear the same, extremely tired Bone playlists with Aerosmith, the Stones and The Eagles. That goes for KFOG, too, with more contemporary “classics” repeated ad nauseum.

“Mike” states: “KFOG has…become boring as [bleep]”

Agreed. It is wholly stale and predictable, (Dave Matthews, anyone?), uninspired (they’ve been running the same promotions like clockwork for years, if not decades), and their jocks have always come across as pretentious snobs.

Atwater Kent says: “Neither the Bone or KFOG was adjusting their playlist last week in anticipation of KKSF changing formats.”

Conventionality, resting on laurels and playing it safe is not a benefit, especially if owned by the same company. From what I’ve heard on the ex-KKSF, they’re playing a lot of the same tunes from both The Bone and KFOG playlists. Time and the PPM will determine if no playlist adjustment is the way to go.

More likely KBLX will tweak their playlist and pick up the displaced KKSF listeners.

This is the reason that I love coming to his board every day!

One of my co-workers came into work today all bummed out because when she turned on her car radio to 103.7 this morning she heard the Steve Miller Band playing and then something about "the band" and thought to herself "WTF?"

And of course by being the receptionist at my workplace I get to be the immediate sounding board for any and everything as people come into work.

I then told her, "shoot, I saw this one coming days ago, thanks to Radio-Info BOARDS>TOP 20 MARKETS>San Francisco.

Now she's hip to the insider tip too.

Thank you to all the contributors that keep us radio lovers ahead of the game.

Cheers!

What I'd like to know is... what bowling alley has a smooth jazz station playing in the background?
