KLAZ's new morning show

I haven't gotten a chance to listen. I lose KLAZ right be I hit the state line but a larger female role in the morning show has been a long time coming. Considering the format of the station, you guys certainly made the right decision increases the use of females and adding a little youth to the station. Even when I worked there, I was 35 and felt like I was pushing the demo. To be the young, hip station, I think you have to be young and hip and I was never hip. LOL!

My only wish is for mid-days to be live or at the very least, voiced by someone who knows the market. NOT that I am saying that because I do voice work and know the market, only because I believe you lose a certain amount of community credibility when you have someone on air who doesn't live in the area. Then again, I'm old school and really miss live radio. Of course, talking out of both sides of my mouth, I certainly understand the financial benefits of voice tracking. I just wish you could find someone local who knew the city instead of the out of state voice you're using.

Anybody got any udpated reaction to the new Big Daddy/Heidi show? Now that they've been on a little while, it sounds like the show is tightening up and they're playing off each other very well. Keith's big strength is playing straight man and making his partner sound great. No telling what the actual numbers are, but it's obvious they've built a strong phone following. They've also gotten just a bit closer to the edge with some of their material. Nothing scandalous, but definitely edgier.

Overall, it sounds like a plus, but it's hard to replace a show that's been in one place for a long time, even a mediocre one. From what I can tell the old show wasn't bad at all, but the new mix definitely gives Heidi a bigger role and should draw more females over the long term. An intangible is the constant promoing. That goes a long way toward building a long term base.

Just my humble opinion and your mileage may vary.

Voice tracking gives with one hand and takes with the other. It makes bean counters happy since it looks cheaper on paper. Of course, you can't quantify the credibility that comes with someone who's really in tune with the market. Some places do more than others to try to keep their trackers in touch with their communities. At it's best, tracking can give you a financially feasable way to bring in top notch top talent at fraction of the price of a full time local host.

The real problem starts when the suits start thinking they can replace everyone with voice trackers. Pretty soon you don't have anyone to run the board when you do a remote, or even have to scramble to find someone to go out on a remote.

I think the most a programmer can hope for in today's environment is to have live mornings and afternoons. Convincing management to be live, local and full time (with benefits) anywhere else is going to be an ongoing struggle.

As far as talent is concerned, it again is a mixed situation. A lot of us are getting paid a lot less than we think is fair, but we're able to make up at least some of the difference by voice tracking.

I agree with you for the most part but I really don't think your mid-days girl would qualify in my book as a "top notch top talent". PLEASE send her a phonetic spelling for Lake WAU-CHEETA... WASH-I-TAW.

There's nothing more irritating to locals than hearing names of people and places butchered by some out of state voice tracker. Believe me, I've been that out of town voice tracker and have had my big old white behind hanging out the window of a radio station because I mispronounced the mayors last name. It's been a long time since then...today, I would like to think I'm a little smarter. When I started doing news for Mountain Home the first thing I did was ask HOW DO I PRONOUCE THIS!

This statement isn't really even point specifically to voice tracking. You guys in management always seem to think out of state means better quality air staff. How do I say this nicely??? We be in the South boys...don't have some darned ol' Yankee on the air reading me my weather. GRRRR! I like a little twang with my radio!

It's nice to feel welcome.

I remember going into what was then KACQ 106.3 in the late 70's & Bob Clemens showed us the wall of automated reel-to-reels & carousels. The AM was live but FM was all taped country. Joey Michaels was one of the DJ's on the tapes.

There's a blast from the past.

Has anybody heard the bit Heidi and Big Daddy are doing with Heidi's long lost "grandmother" Granny Crawford? I won't even try to describe it, except to say that it's a tossup for who's gonna get more bent out of shape: the KKK or the NAACP....

Now you can ad the Gay and Lesbian alliance to the list of haters. When you p.o. that many people you gotta be doing something right....

;D
