Seems like La Mejor 104.5 had a visitor lol. I was able to pick up KLQB 104.3 today. It started on I10 and beltway 8 close to That Elephant flea market and then lost signal till I got to 610 and Wayside. Then lost signal and I was able to pick it up on 610 close to LBJ Hospital and hasn't lost signal on my vehicle radio on my neighborhood on 59 north and Crosstimbers Rd.

No surprise, we are entering prime tropo season after all. If you watch the DX map (http://aprs.mountainlake.k12.mn.us/), you'll see most of Texas was in the very active zones last night and this morning. Many of the usual suspects (KTXN/98.7, KISS/99.5, KSAB/99.9, KSMG/105.3, KTKX/106.7 to name a few) have been making their appearances on the local dial.*

* the dial of a normal radio with a normal antenna.

Don't even need more than a "normal radio", Huff. Had WYNK-FM @ 101-5 3 nights out of this week. Confirmed with a weather report for WBRZ and several mentions of local ads. This was done on a WX/AM/FM portable I picked up from Best Buy for a song. Would you believe I even logged the College Station translator at 103-5 night before last? It's true, matched its programming directly to our own KFTG, and that's a lot of distance for a D translator from over 100 miles northwest.

Are we entering the tropo season early this year? Usually it doesn't start until March. Yesterday or day before I couldn't get any HD-2, because it seemed like everything normally "just over the horizon" was blasting in. Nothing from Dallas or San Antonio, but things like KNDE and KCOL.

KMAZ-LP has been getting beaten up pretty badly from both ends. KMKS has been overtaking it throughout the week, then when KMKS drops back down, here comes Beaumont's Magic. K283CH has not had any problems, so far, combating co-channels KZEP Hot 104-5 over in SA, or Kiss FM KKMY from Beaumont. It has held strong, as has K291CE at my abbreviated checks of 106-1. Haven't heard the Big Dog in months.

Not to diminish mrtejano's accomplishment, but KLQB is really not that difficult a catch here in Houston. Like KROX-FM, it tends to show up down here pretty regularly. Once 101X moves south and boosts power, we should see it match Bob-FM appearances over here. Austin stations just seem to make a beeline towards us this time of year. Eventually, even KKHT will have to combat KASE 101 again, as it's done many times before. Give it another month, and we'll be hearing country music trying to infiltrate our FM sports station, and being somewhat surprised when we hear that we're suddenly listening to Air 1 on KXAI Refugio-Corpus Christi, instead of what we assumed was KHJK La Porte-Houston as usual.

I think the tropo has started. I picked up KNCT HD out in Lavaca county very good a few weekends ago, even with KHVT very strong next door. I've been getting crazy pick ups with my new setup I have.

Last night many stations from Houston and Corpus Christi were coming in like local stations.

As for translators a few weeks ago at the beginning of January I was picking up a weak Hum Tum 106.1 translator in San Antonio with a cheap radio.

You're saying that in the near future we will be able to hear 104.3 here more often? Will than affect 104.5 in any way?

No, mrtejano, not 104-3. It's 101-5 that's going to significantly upgrade. Once complete, 101X will cover a large section of the I-35 corridor, from northeast San Antonio up to north of Austin. It will have nearly as large of a coverage area as 103-5 does currently, and if you tune your radio to 103-5, it's likely you will hear KBPA from San Marcos at your location.
