KLRG-AM 880 Sheridan/Little Rock

I've been listening to this station the past few days. Very interesting, to say the least. They appear to be rebroadcasting WTAN-AM 1340, a small suburban Tampa Bay AM, based in Clearwater, Florida. The Legal ID identifies WTAN, KLRG, and another small AM which is located on the other side of the Tampa Bay metro.

On their website, they bill themselves as K-Large, the Little Rock Giant, and as a 50,000 Watt Super Station. The daytime signal is impressive here in Conway, but it disappears completely after dark. I'm not sure of their directional pattern, but I'm assuming they have to protect KRVN/Lexington, WCBS/New York, and possibly first-adjacents WLS and WWL as well (?)

Audio quality is poor. Both Imus in the Morning and Alan Jones (afternoons) sound as if they're being delivered via extremely low bit digital feeds.

Most interesting of all are the promos I have heard, soliciting people to come in and do their own radio shows. I assume they're selling blocks of time to whomever wants them (?) "Call today and you can be on the air next week!" Is this a sign of innovation or desperation? I'm not sure.

Anyone else have comments and/or insights on this station?

You can't hear it at night in Conway because they are licensed for 50kw non directional day from a tower in near W. 65th street in south Little Rock and 31kw during critical hours from the same tower. At night they are licensed to a 4 tower directional array on highway 270 in Sheridan at something like 22 watts but I'm not sure if they are even on at night.

I assumed they were on nights at low power because they don't do any sort of sign off. The signal just drops out completely during the syndicated program. Then, I hear KRVN until local pattern change time in Lexington.

At certain times 880 blast into the Jackson, MS. It was indeed gospel for a number of years. From time to time 760 can also be heard down here. A few other Little Rock stations that could be heard heard was of course the Mighty 1090 KAAY (althought its not what it used to be) KARN 920 the old kids station K-Pal (1380) under all the other slop in the background. Seems that station simulcast KARN for a while didn't it? I heard it was gone for good. We used to listen to K-pal while driving through Little Rock with kids in the car. Signal wasn't bad, its a shame they let it die. Wasn't Radio Disney on 1380 or was that Radio Ahhs? I've always been curious about that station. That was the first kids station I ever heard, before Radio Disney was ever on the air. Was the original format locally produced or was it some network? If so who was it. Seems like it was kids before I'd ever heard of Ahhs or Disney.

1380 North Little Rock has had a lot of formats, and off the air for extended periods.

Presently KDXE 1380 is conservative talk such as Laura Ingraham, Michael Savage, Rusty Humphries and until the end of year "Dr" Laura S. (that one). 1380 KDXE was off the air for several months but went back on after KLRG itself reactivated. Previous 1380 recent formats was a couple of stints of ESPN Radio with a few months of Air America radio when Nova M leased it.

The Radio Disney stint was from 1999-2003 when the RD programming went over to the former KFYX(?) "Foxy 99" on Labor Day weekend (99.5 was stunting with classic Disney movie theme music). I think they also did all news (bird-fed), and even sports talk in 1998 (the first station in Little Rock to carry Jim Rome) before Citadel sold 1380 to acquire KAAY.

KDXE-AM 1380's Achilles Heel is it's tight directional null to the northwest. They cannot be heard in Conway at all. Now that Faulkner County is part of the Little Rock MSA, this puts them at a huge disadvantage.

BTW, KLRG is looking for experienced board-ops, if anyone is interested. I heard the announcement yesterday afternoon (12/16.)

That and the fact that it's an AM station.
