KLSX 97.1 FM Talk becomes Ampradio 97.1 Aircheck!

Not sure if anyone else has posted airchecks of the flip from 97.1 FM Talk to Amp Radio yet... Though I don't like either format, (haven't had 97.1 on the presets since 1995) I tuned this in while driving down Pico Blvd in rush hour traffic, just out of curiosity.

It was very nice to hear that they had let the jocks say goodbye on the air. What a difference from Indie.

The introductory AMP audio montage is obviously not aimed at my demo, (I think it's aimed at 14 year olds) but I found it to be a muddled mess. It went on forever. I had to force myself to keep listening, just because I wanted to know what the first song was. Oh, it was Kanye West. How daring! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Looks like 97.1 will go another 12 years remaining off my presets.

I did like that they tried to make it "LA"-ish with lots of little sound bites of people saying "Los Angeles," but overall it was the stereotypical, brain-dead LA they were trying to tap into. Sad. L.A. is so much more than that.

Well it was a nice dramatic way to signal the change, but they could've just started playing music if they really wanted to.

I wish I knew about it the exact day our 101.5 JamZ KZON first popped on the air here in Phx. I never knew that the talk radio format was flipped until about a week later when I was flipping through and heard an unusual song on an unusual spot on the rotary dial. I was excited to discover that we had a rhythmic station... for certain reasons... and I was happy we finally had a TRUE rhythmic format here once again, but..... well flash forward to now, I'll just say although there could be some major improvements, I still like 101.5 JamZ KZON the most out of all. It's funny how 97.1 is breaking that Kanye West first. It hasn't even premiered on future flavaz here yet, so at least we know 97.1 will at times be the leader in cutting edge music... or maybe Phoenix is just late and I don't know what I'm talking about.

And, thank goodness, as I always like to say, that electro-pop and dance seem to be rising as hip hop dies out. When you see hip hop artists abandoning their own genre, that's a sign of things changing. Now that I've scanned through, it pretty much sounds a lot like what our 101.5 JamZ sound like NOW that they've backed away from all that hip hop they used to play with their pop. I wouldn't mind a station like Amp, but like I've said, some good mix shows that include some form of dance remixes, and actual dance (not just mash-ups) would be good. When our 101.5 JamZ first took over the talk station in July '07, it was much "harder" than amp when it came to playing hip hop hits. But now they've changed from 101.5 Blazin Hitz & Hip Hop to Your #1 Hit Music Station (even though Kiss is where the REAL hit music variety is mostly at). Amp sounds alright for an FM dial terrestrial radio station... but so far it's nothing that makes me wish I could move to Cali when I already have two stations similar here. Oh well. Good luck to KIIS. I remember enjoying them way back in the day along with Power too. They both became boring for a while, then recently Power became a bit interesting again, thanks to Latino 96.3 (which doesn't have a freakin stream so I could only imagine their mix shows!!) I haven't been following KIIS lately, so I don't know about them, but WiLD 94.9 (in my opinion) still beats all the stations I know about or pay attention to in California when it comes to music I like. I believe 106.1 is good too, but they don't seem to have a website to stream from, so I'm going with 94.9 all the way. We need to borrow or steal some of those California stations you people have going out there.... no not the stations, but some of the PD's and DJ's who are willing to take risks to make things exciting, fun, and interesting! Maybe we can get someone to give our MOViN a makeover for a start...

Not so. Indie had a "goodbye" show during the entire morning of the switch, and then for two days ran a tape loop with messages about the Indie-on-the-Web project.

Like KIIS, it's aimed, primarily, at 18-34 women, with spillage into 34-44 and 12-17. From the music, it looks like it is targeted a bit more Hispanic than KIIS, too.

Thanks for the links. However, the 106.1 KMEL one wasn't one I was looking for... but Latino 96.3 will do for now until WiLD 106.1 The Party Station finally gets their new website done. Why couldn't they just keep the stream on their MySpace? So far I'm enjoying this Latino 96.3, and they aren't even mixing. I think I could listen to this type of format all (or most of the) day. If only our KVIB were more like this...

Amp is good, but I think I'd still be switching over to 96.3 or Power 106 at certain times if I were living there. Probably even KGGI a bit. I have no idea what Jammin Z90 or Q104.7 has turned out to be these days... but those were past favorites at times, especially the Q104.7 I could not pick up when I wanted to! The "party station" type format will forever be my favorite (and anything that resembles that typical format) and has always been since childhood.

Ok.. Latino 96.3 isn't turning out to be exactly what I was thinking... but it's still good. It's a station today that would've perfectly fit my taste in music 3 to 4 years ago.

I have no idea what Jammin Z90 or Q104.7 has turned out to be these days... but those were past favorites at times, especially the Q104.7 I could not pick up when I wanted to!

Both stations are pretty much Hip-Hop/R & B with some rhythmic touches (like Lady GaGa, for example). Links provided below. Only within about the last half hour or so of that morning show did the hosts start saying their goodbyes, wrapping up with Frank Sinatra's "My Way".

Oh no! My Jammin Z90 and Q104.7.. Does this mean their mix shows are no longer the same, too? Oh well... that was 9 - 10 years ago.. things change, times change, move on... Anyway, at least they're doing what they must do to succeed as a business and I'm happy for them because after all, I guess that's really what matters the most in the end.

Kidding a bit about 14 year olds, but they'll definitely be listening. If you have any kids, grandkids, nieces or nephews, you'll know that ALL 12 year olds listen to KIIS (after graduating from Disney.) (No, not literally all 12 year olds, David. Let me save you the typing time....)

As for Indie, they may have had a goodbye show that morning - that is news to me. But Jonsey, the heart of the station, was not given the chance to say goodbye, nor were most of the hosts. In fact, his guests for that day's noontime show were waiting in the lobby, unaware their appearance had been canceled. Nobody knew the station was leaving until the day-of, whereas the KLSX guys knew for days. How can the audience enjoy a goodbye show if they don't know it's happening?

The "tape loop" that Indie ran was B.S. The guys who really ran Indie were infuriated that it was running, because it was just something the corporate guys threw on there without their permission. (See LA Weekly article.) It was embarassingly contrived, and had nothing to do with the creative forces behind the station, nor its spirit. A terrible (and irritating) way for the station to go out.

That's what I thought. Clearly, the jocks at Indie caught wind with 30 minutes to go, and naturally said goodbye in some way. But that's not a 'goodbye show,' one where thought goes into how it will end, and the audience is forewarned so they can tune in and hear it.

The last two rock stations that mattered, KMET and the Edge, both had well publicized "end dates," and the creative people at the station had a chance to plan something special. KLSX also did this, and though I loathed the talk-version of the station, good for them and their fans.

Isn't it amusing that AAA's all get about a 1 share, yet the lesson is lost on whoever thinks that it was because the former efforts were badly done...

It was never better done than the short-lived KMPC-FM/KEDG-FM (The Edge). The station was inventive and brought new music to the table without being too cool for the room, gave their jocks some flexibility, had great personalities like Raechel Donaghue in the mornings (very creative and funny - most underappreciated morning jock ever due to the station's overall poor ratings) and Jim Ladd doing what he does and a cast of others that really acted like they were all on the same team and really dug the station themselves. Simply put, Coolest station ever.

Too bad the format can't do any better, regardless of who runs the ship. There really should be a place for intelligent adult alternative music that isn't on the snooty public radio stations.
