I have noticed several people attacking KLSY on this Board. I
would like to get a couple of things clear. I am new to town,
but find KLSY very listenable and a solid CHR-HOT/AC. The night
jock is the best in town and is growing in 18-34 and teen appeal.
The PD, is not "small market." He has worked in top ten markets
as a jock and was PD of the year in a medium market. To say he
cannot compete against STAR is just wrong. So what if their
PD and Morning Show have been in town 20 years. Maybe they haven't
had any good competition? I know several PD's that just go through
the motions. Doesn't their PD have a TV show? How much time can
he spend coaching his morning team, working on promotions. How
in touch is a 50+ year old male with music that appeals to 25-34 year
old women? Seems to me KLSY is in a perfect position to do very well
but it won't happen over night. Notice most of the KLSY gains are
at the expense of KBKS, which sounds like high school radio. You
build from the young end and as any smart programmer knows it takes
a bit longer to get the older folks. Since KLSY changed this winter,
KBKS has been hurt in mornings, mid-days and nights. STAR will take
a bit longer. Maybe it is KBKS or STAR that will go Country not KLSY.
Give the PD and staff a break.
Look, I know it may be tough, but the PD has his lineup in place, just
put the format on in February. KLSY has already caught KBKS, they might
just catch STAR and even give sister station KRWM a run. Give the staff
a break. Props to Bill West and Company for doing something unique and
taking on a 20 year station. Let's hope someone gets the same guts and
takes on KMPS. Just my view from the new guy in town.
