KMAS - FORMAT CHANGE?

I turned on KMAS this morning to hear the news, but they're still playing oldies.

I would imagine that since today is technically a holiday, the big flips on KVI and KMAS won't happen until tomorrow.......

Curious that they didn't use the "throw-away" day today for a dry run on the automated new format. That would have made too much sense though, wouldn't it?

The change has come *yawn*- News Radio 1030 KMAS and 104.1. It's "Daybreak" with Jeff and Dale. Syndicated National News Radio starts at 9am... hang on kids!

Jeez, Randy...you're not bitter over being fired, are you?

It's a new year...let it go. You're better than that.

Hi John- thank you for your opinion. What you don't know is the way it was handled.

You're absolutely right, Randy. I don't know how it was handled.

All I know is what's on this board, and IMO your continuing public slams against your former employer aren't doing you any good as you try to find a new job.

I caught about an hour of the broadcast this morning, 6:15 to about 7:10. Dale and Jeff mostly discussing the format change and what to expect from the all new “Newsradio 1030”. Dale felt that Mason County needed a news station that can provide current and up to date information to the listeners. He furthered his discussion to make the change stating that with the internet, satellite and ipod type devices, consumers can customize the music that they want to hear. Adding to the Mason County Daily News website as well as the printed MCDN paper, an all news station was a logical change for them to make to bring Olympic Broadcast and Media full circle.

In my opinion, what he overlooked is the typical Mason County resident doesn’t include a techno savvy consumer who uses Ipads, Iphones, Ipods and satellite radio. While there is a sector of the listening market that does draw music from sources that he suggested, I would think there is a healthy amount of the population that is of an older generation that doesn’t use these new gadgets.

Shelton is a small market and should be broadcasting as such. I draw local news, local (high school) sporting events, local interest programming and local talent from KMAS. If I want current and up to date news, the big boys in Seattle boom their signal out to Mason County for all to hear.

Seems the local radio station is no more. They will run a local morning show highlighting local events and discussion before switching to Washington DC for a nationally syndicated show. Even the local news is canned, generated down in the southern states.

KMAS had a good thing going before being bought by Olympic Broadcast and Media. A morning show filled with music, news, local discussion and entertainment. Various local talent and shows during the balance of the broadcast hours. A change in music format soon followed, which I personally didn’t care to see happen. Now a Newsradio format.

In my opinion, Newradio is not what Shelton needs. A huge loss to see the local talent let go, the music disappearing and regional formatting changed to a national news broadcast. Realizing I am just a RadioDope, don’t know nothin’ about nothin’, but I know what I like and what I don’t. Changing a multi -genre music, local entertainment, local information AM radio into a news radio in a small community just doesn’t seem to work for a listener like myself.

The Voice of Mason County has been silenced. We now have the Voice of the Nation booming out over the 1030 and 104.1 airwaves.

radiodope brings up a lot of good points. Except one.

To do local radio the way it should be done takes money. LOTS of money. Money that's just not there in small markets. And that's the BIG reason why you have what you have today on KMAS.

It's not just unique to Shelton, In Aberdeen, Mr. Wolfenbarger runs syndicated and network talk/music programming on his "locally owned & totally involved" radio stations. Would he like to have live & local around the clock? I bet he would. Reality says otherwise.

To be sure, small market radio is tough and getting tougher. National advertisers ignore us, thinking they cover the market with their metro buys. I won't second-guess what someone must do in another small market to stay alive.

Sad that an oldies/classic hits station serving residents all over Mason County goes to news/talk stuff that you can hear on a gazillion other AMs. Randy, I hope you find a good job somewhere! Maybe you can join someone in Olympia (KGY 96.9 maybe?)

There's also Mixx 96.1, and also don't forget about Bill, who has plans to move 93.7 as a rimshot into the Puget Sound area!  (as long as some other translators don't try to set up shop on that wavelength).  And 96.9 does get some coverage into the Puget Sound area as well.  Also 94.5 KRXY (which here in Bremerton, usually has conflicts with the KMIH translator from Downtown Seattle, but comes in Federal Way/Des Moines south pretty well though).  As far as KMAS goes...what a waste of an FM translator for their AM station!  It looked like for a bit they were advertising it very well locally in Shelton with it's stereo signal.  Now looks like that's all gone to waste.

KRXY mixes with the KMIH translator in Auburn. Driving in a car it's unlistenable, flip flopping from K233BU to KRXY and back to K233BU. KGY and KXXO are good in Auburn, the latter good in Bellevue but KGY is quite weak where I live at the moment. Bill in my opinion moving 93.7 into South Puget Sound would SHATTER the coverage of CJJR in Vancouver, as I get that when I am in Marysville with relatives. KXXO and CHKG flip flop back and forth there, causing an unlistenable mess.

Personally I am glad for the change. Not that I like the outsourced programming, but because it leaves a huge void in the Shelton market. The time when KMAS was most popular and accepted was when Harold and Marion Greenberg ran it folowed by the solid gold format. Now you can't get local programming closer than KGY in Olympia. Why do I like that? because it opens up an audience for a part 15 station. With enough relays Shelton can be covered without interferring with anyone, and having worked at both the above mentioned stations and having respect for bhoth of them, I have seen what works for Shelton and what doesn't. Long story short, an LPAM station on 930KHz is up and running and streaming online and filling the void.

Will, this deserves a thread of its own. You are doing what half the guys on this site have never done. Started up your own station. It maybe micro-power but programming philosophy remains the same whether it's 100 milliwatts or 50,000. Good job! Hope you land some sponsors and some relay hosts. Keep an ear to the ground when the FCC opens the door soon to more LPFM stations. Do your homework now and you may land a spot on FM. Of course it'll have to be non-com!
