KMCQ FM

I assume then 3-letter calls are only authorized on the FM side (and even TV), only if they are being used on the AM side (as the case with KJR, KHQ, KGW...etc...).

Correct...the ONLY exception I am aware of is KHJ/L.A. They switched calls at one point, and then wanted to go back, but FCC said "no". So they switched to K-KHJ. Then they filed a complaint with FCC asking for KHJ because KKHJ, as a spanish language station, would go on the air once an hour with a legal I.D. starting with "Ka-Ka". FCC granted their wish....and probably SHOULD have based on the creativity alone!!!

Otherwise you see examples such as 1300-KKOL/Seattle, etc. and marketed as "KOL" to pay homage to their grandfathered station.

I'm wondering how this will all work out?  I assume KMCQ, KAFE, and CHHR will be working with each other on a "switchover-date" once everything is worked out between the FCC and CRTC?  CHHR switching to 104.3, KAFE switching to 104.1, and then KMCQ powering up on Cougar Mountain, all within a minute of each other?  I think I wanna catch a recording of KAFE's switchover to 104.1 once they do it!  Wonder if KAFE is gonna have some kind of on-air switchover party??

Uh, when (once again), KMCQ isn't concerned about what listeners they attract, why would they care whether they coordinate with KAFE to switch over in a minute?

This item appeared on the Northwest Broadcasters site today:

10/16/09 - The upcoming frequency exchange between Shore CHHR-FM 104.1 Vancouver and KAFE-FM 104.3 Bellingham is expected in the next two to three months. Shore Media Group president and GM Roy Hennessy tells NORTHWEST BROADCASTERS that KAFE has to erect a temporary tower for a few days while a new directional antenna is installed. Shore's power will increase 25% while KAFE will reduce its northern signal power. So far there have been minimal complaints about interference between the two stations, much less than originally anticipated. KAFE's shift to 104.1 facilitates the move of KMCQ-FM 104.5 Covington to Cougar Mountain, near Seattle.

what is an adequate window of time to promote frequency switch to your audience? Keep in mind that when we are SICK of a "new" song ... that's about when a listener is just starting to "like" it. If I were the commerc stations making a change, I would want to insist that "appropriate" amount of time be the minimum for all clocks to coordinate on this deal. Radio doesn't have a "forward" option like the web does!

Since KMCQ 104.5 is upgrading from Class C-3 to Class C-2. Would it be possible for KMCQ to upgrade to Class C1?

Don't think so. That would cause some "interference" (In the FCC's books) with KFNK 104.9, KDUX 104.7, the soon-to-be KAFE 104.1, the soon to be CHHR 104.3, and even though it's over the mountains and would not cause interference, KKRV 104.7 in Wenatchee. (The FCC does not account for terrain, even if the Cascades blocked the signal). The move is real tight, like as though you're playing Tetris with radio signals. Hence, only 7,100 watts directional from Cougar Mountain. Just enough to cover Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, and Bremerton.
