KMEL 106.1

Though I am not a fan of either Hip-Hop or Rap, I am curious what is the difference, music wise, between KMEL-106.1 and KYLD-94.9? I know that one is Urban and the other is CHR/Rhythmic, but is there an actual difference between those two formats?

A typical Urban station is targeted more to African Americans. It usually has more African American personalities on the air and its audience is usually more than 50% African Americans. The music mix is mostly hip-hop and rap but will include some current R&B.

A Rhythmic CHR is targeted more to Hispanics. They will take any African Americans, Asians and Whites that also want to listen but for the most part, it is going for the Hispanics. There is very little, if any, R&B on a Rhythmic CHR station. When not playing hip-hop, a Rhythmic CHR will throw in a dance-oriented pop song instead.

Well, I remember looking at the breakdown of KMEL's audience and it was said that blacks only make up 35% of their target with Hispanics being the majority with like 40% and Asians making up the rest like 25%. It's an unique urban since 2 of its full time on air personalities being Hispanics (Chuy Gomez and Sana G), 1 Asian (Drew Hef), and the rest are black. I believe it's the only urban in the US that blacks doesn't make up the majority of its targeted audience.

Rick Chase was let go by KMEL in 1999 as the result of multiple controversies arising out of his alleged bad behavior and the content of his show. He reappeared at a station in Sacramento for awhile. He was found in his Stockton home dead of a heart attack in 2002.

The last radio station that Rick Chase worked at was KWIN-97.7 in Stockton. They discovered his body when he didn't show up to work.

Rick worked at KZZO-100.5 Sacramento, then worked at a radio station in Reno, Nevada, then its owner at the time (Silverado Broadcasting) transferred him to KWIN. Definately a sad fall in grace, from working in San Francisco and end his career before his death in Stockton.

Speaking of KMEL, I'm surprised to see that K2 aka Kenard Karter, formerly of sister station WGCI, is now the midday host and moved Sana G to afternoons. I didn't ever think they were going to fill that 4th position for a full-timer on-air.

K2 is also MD / APD so the salary is justified.

Oh alright, I can see how he is APD, but according to Mediabase, Big Von is still listed as MD.

I understand. I do wish K2 would allow more R&B throwbacks to air during middays though because he seems to only focus on the hip-hop classics. Although KMEL has not direct competition they seem to do quite well in the market for balance and variety overall.
