KMPH - 840 Back in Modesto?

I've been listening in Elk Grove. Although the signal is marginal here, I like the oldies mix they are playing. I'm hearing "Cindy's Birthday" (Johnny Crawford) "High Heel Sneakers" ( Tommy Tucker) "Be Bop A Lula" (Gene Vincent) It's not the overplayed CCR and Elton John that a lot of stations go for. Are they giving 920 a run for their money?
When KMPH first went on the year, their format was Adult Standards which is what 920 is. Listening to KMPH today, they sound more like Traditional Rock And Roll Oldies. KVIN also plays what was then known as MOR and Easy Listening as well as the Pop Oldies. KMPH sounds more like Oldies than Classic Hits as most other Oldies stations refer to their music.

The rock and roll is playing more and more on 920. Listened today for a couple of hours and it was sounding very good with the mix of oldies!

Modesto has two stations with a fairly similar format. You think we could get one in Sacramento? Ohhh Nooo ain't gonna do it!

OK ,it looks like KMPH will settle into a RnR Oldie format, that is great ,I'll listen.

But I'm concerned,in all due respect to the people behind it ,it is sounding more and more like a poorly run college radio station.
Jingles overlap with songs,OK once in awhile but it is happening more and more, the constant station ID's K-M-P-H are getting old.
Some songs have "way too much" reverb on them, yet the same song afew days earlier sounded perfect with no or very little reverb.
The audio at first was pretty bad but it has gotten better.

I realize it'll take awhile to get things right but don't loose it in the process. Also there is no way this thing can run forever without commercials, jukebox radio is fun ( actually it gets old after awhile ) but commercials pay the bills.
Are there people on the street selling time ? Any plan to do some advertising to promote the station ?

I've cut back on the Disco and a bunch of the '70s hits that were being played on KMPH, and added a lot more of the late '50s and early '60s Gold (mostly deep cuts).

The imaging package was much bigger, but some of the stuff just wasn't working and is being re-done.

I agree with the "jukebox" comment, and especially about the commercial content (or lack thereof). But it's a work in progress -- especially in regard to the audio quality. There was a bit of experimentation with reverb, but I think just getting it to sound brighter is a better solution.

I agree. Brighter is better. As a teenager in my car I would slightly off tune a station to emphasize the high end a little better. And I always replaced the factory 6x9's with the ones that had the whizzer cones. AM hi-fi.

I haven't heard any disc jockeys yet. Are there any? And if not, will there any in the near future?

You are right. I just tuned KVIN-920 in. Are they still running Dial Global's Adult Standards service or did the change it?

Listening today from Fresno, I thought the audio was pretty decent. I've Harmon Kardon audio in my Mercedes and KMPH audio beat that of KYNO (at least to my ears). Still waiting for something of KFRC quality - that was good AM audio.

As to the mix, much better than the first days. Makes a good alternative on my way to/from work. Been decades since we could flip stations as we can now (at least during the day).

I'd hope they can retool the image package. The concept is sold.

Enjoying The Music off my iPhone KYA Windurradio app. What happened to Classic KYA as This new station KMPH is on Its App. Love It!!! Sincerely - Joe Goria

I'd back off on the amount of "audio density", unless the goal is to penetrate the fringes "come hell or high water". I'd probably listen longer if more dynamics in the music were salvaged in the process.

If the original content was compressed to death, like some 60's recordings were produced, good that was the intent. But 90% of the era doesn't need to be forced into that realm.

In a nut shell: KMPH sounds marginal on a "wide-band" receiver too much compression/peak clipping. (I think KYNO sounds "cleaner" in comparison.) But I will also compare on the good old GM radio that tends to trim and roll off around 3khz.

Is "Bob Oscar Johnson" the "imaging" voice?

So far, KMPH is the best offer in the central valley for oldies. It appears lots of fine tuning is being done to the play list, creating "Graffiti Gold." No disco, limited 70's, mostly 60's hits. Comparing KMPH to KVIN, KMPH plays from their studio library and KVIN is a satellite feed. That should allow for some listener input? Daytime signal into Stockton is listenable and night is a booming 20 over signal. I hope the loop will be stretched to where the same songs aren't heard every day. Keep guessing on the imaging voices. You're not even warm yet.

Listening in Elk Grove over the weekend and it did seem like there has been a signal upgrade of sorts. I don't hear the ignition noise with the music in the car anymore. Comes in good on a portable too.

Enjoying the booming signal into Stockton as well. Don't hold your breath though. There's bound to be a glitch that won't last.

Does the Delta breeze blow in a 50k watt transmitter so that grafitti gold can be heard from Redding to Bakersfield?

Even though KVIN is satellite, at least they have disc jockeys to add personality to the station. That is the only thing lacking with KMPH is personality. I can have more fun and variety with my iPod. KMPH definately needs to hire disc jockeys soon!

I'm sure personality will depend on budget. For now, the music is great and long over due. I believe time will prove positive. Remember, it's new and needs time to develop. Have patience. We should all be pleasantly surprised.

The audio still is not right on KMPH,I thought it improved but on songs like ,Wake Up Little Susie, you can her this "distortion" on S's.
Many other songs too ,on S's
What causes this ?

Heard on a number of radios I have.

KVIN has no DJ's at least when I listen ,they got somebody ( local ) that does do spots ,weather ,etc. But no real DJ's.
I think KVIN did away totaly with the old Music Of Your Life format they had,I'd say 90% of what they do now comes from KVIN,at least I think that is what is happening.
