KMPH - 840 Back in Modesto?

I too have heard the "s" crash. Being that the music is Mp3 format, it could be built into the file, but may also be in audio processing. Good observation. I will gently enquire about that.

Okay, I'm catching the distortion on the "esses" (or "eshes"), too. On the direct feed from the studio, it's bright, clean and perfect ... over the air, I'm hearing "eshes."

While driving around, I noticed a lot of hash and splash on 830 and 850 AM, and thought it may have contributed to the problem on 840.

Checking into it...

I noticed the "s" issue only on some songs. Al Wilson's " The Snake" was awful but Joe Turner's "Shake , Rattle and Roll was fine.

Or possibly it's a result of the problem? I've heard that type of sound on AM when the transmitter is band-limited and people try to compensate by increasing the high-end in the processing. The result is that the silibant portions of the audio get clipped. I don't get a good enough signal on 840 to be able to evaluate it (I'm up in Grass Valley/Nevada City now) but from the descriptions here that's my guess.

I remember KSTN had that problem when they signed on with the classic country too.

A noticeable difference in the high end on various titles surely would be in the EQ mix when the song was converted to Mp3. I've noticed that when recording from vinyl. Got to watch that high end for sure. When recording Beach Boys 78's to digital, it gave me a challenge. Those esses just wanted to crash. I believe the problem on KMPH is two fold, but the experts will work that out. In the meanwhile, the format is very welcome and great.

I agree the format is great. I hope ads will be comming so that it can be sustained. (Did I just say that?) I have heard some spots for Hot August Nights lately though. I also picked the signal up the other day on a trip to Santa Clara on a walkman.

I've always believed that this format would be hot in the valley and attracting advertisers shouldn't be a problem. As for the signal, it is fabulous. AM radio is for me. I've had enough of talk radio.

What Happened ?

Wanted to listen to KMPH going to Bay Area Thursday ( 8/15 ) AM ,it was off ?
Was back on later in day.

Today there is just a carrier ,Friday ( 8/16 ) AM . . . ?

An article in the Modesto Bee says the station was vandalized, causing $500 in damage.
There's way too much of that going on these days.
Sorry you have to go through that hassle, David.
On another note, I'm sure not looking forward to the site upgrade. What a mess since the new owners of Radiodiscussions have taken over.
Slow page loading, lots of flash trash; how come I suspect the "upgrade" is going to be even more of a debacle?

New member of RD board here, thanks to looking for info on KMPH. Glad to be here...

Great stuff KMPH! Particularly nice to have a consistently-strong signal (day and night) of this format that I can listen to on my antique radios at home in Pleasanton, as well as in my car all the way out to Newark every weekday! Been chasing the variety of stations that have come and gone broadcasting this type of programming the last several years. I see the web page is back online again too! http://www.graffitigoldradio.com/ Glad to have the streaming option for those "hard-to-reach places".

Cheers!

On August 15, before dawn, somebody cut through the back fence at the station, then sliced the wiring (phones, Internet, cable TV) going into the building. No other vandalism took place. The transmitter in Waterford kept running -- hence the open carrier -- although no signal was coming in from the STL.

The next morning, somebody got into the KMPH compound again and used a bolt cutter to bust the lock off the utility box and do some petty stuff.

And so it goes...

I find this new system to be difficult to use. It wouldn't accept my old password. Had to get a new one. Anyway, the pro gun PSA's are great. Probably the only station in the state running them. It's about time someone stood up for our Constitutional rights.

When I heard the three ( and only as of this writing ) spots on KMPH,Greek Festival,Olive Oil Company & gun control ,now I appreciate the station and I know you gotta pay the bills ,but I believe that the three only spots are from the original owners of KMPH,correct?
Did they pay money to run these spots?

Is there anybody trying to sell time on this station to advertisers?

So the transmitter stayed on the air even though control was lost? That's a violation of FCC rules. It should shut down automatically.
