KMPS Dropping Lia?

So according to All Access theres a job listing for a new night personality on KMPS does that mean that Lia is off KMPS?
What a suprise!

If ratings are the issue, they should drop their entire weekend staff and dump the morning show too. It seems to me like another panicked response from a station that doesn't know how to deal with competition.

I think the OVERRATED Becky Brenner and her bevy of talent finally realizes LIA is a med market talent at best. Any real competition LIA folds.

Overrated is right. now she needs to actually DO something. she's been riding the wave of success for too long and needs to lead or get the hell out of the way. dump the weekenders and morning show cause they suck

The "what a suprise" was sarcasim! KMPS is sucking it up and the Wolf is kicking some serious butt! Deffinatly agree should drop the morning show!

Good to see that KMPS and Brenner are on the right track. Nothing against Lia, but live and local is the way to go when the competition heats up. Hope they can find an actual "talent" to fill the shift and not just another liner-card reader.

By "on the right track" do you mean that KMPS is reacting to The Wolf almost a year later? I think the iceburg has struck that ship, and Becky and the rest of the crew are just starting to figure out that they need to put the lifeboats in the water.

In the next 12 monts, expect to see many more changes at KMPS.

New PD, with Becky getting "promoted" to station that has no competition. (We call that "failing up".)
A new "younger" sidekicked added to the Ick show. Wow. How will that play with Ick?
New "younger" midday jock, with Stubbs sent home to play with her dogs.

All sound like great ideas, sadly none will save the ship.

We should all remember that KMPS has been doing country and beating all of its competition since the 70's. We should also remember that KMPS has been Seattle's number 1 radio station more times than not over the past decade. Becky Brenner has attracted, developed and retained some of the brightest and most talented air personalities in the business.

All this is to caution anybody who thinks KMPS is "over". They haven't begun to show their teeth!

First off, when you're "King of the Hill", you don't react to a competitor until you know the competition is for real. Even acknowleging the competition during the first year is a dangerous move. KMPS has handled this challenge exactly right: wait one year and see what the landscape looks like and then react to what you see.

Now...a year later, the landscape is clear. The Wolf has taken a bite out of the market with an agressive and exciting new sound for Country Radio in Seattle. They've also completely revealed their programming strategy. With that information, now's the time for KMPS to make their move and the first one is to take evenings local. But remember, Lia lives in Seattle and, while she's syndicated nationwide, she gives KMPS evenings a very local feel. What will probably have to change is the music mix at night and and more interactive presentation. CBS Radio has the tools to make it happen, so be very careful about counting KMPS out just yet.

Longevity has always counted for a great deal to Seattle radio listeners. Seattle has some of the longest-running personalities (both radio and television) in the country. To toss this HUGE advantage aside is dangerous...and Becky her her people are anything but foolish!

As Shakespeare might say, "...stick around for the second act."

I hate to burst your all-knowing bubble, but this statement is not true. Brenner has merely maintained a staff she was given. She did hire Ichabod's wife. Is that what you mean by brightest and most talented in the business. I don't think so.

She's in over her head. She didn't react sooner because she didn't know how to. She's operating not out of strategy but out of panic.

Her brightest idea of the year so far has been "let's call it new country" and now she's dropped that. Proof she hasn't a clue.

Don't forget how KMPS bought Young Country and ultimately dismantled it. Becky was at the helm when they switched it to "Country First," taking a successful brand and morphing it into a weird clone of KMPS. That lasted maybe a year before they flipped the switch to The Point.
I bet KMPS is wishing they could buy the Wolf and put it in a kennel.

Brotha love, don't forget that Brenner was on the LOSING side of the Young Country equation. She was at that station, which was bought by KMPS and she had nothing to do with KMPS until PD Mark Richards left for a better job. Richards has more to do with KMPS's current success than Brenner does. She's dead weight.

Hey talkerdjdude!
I believe Brenner was with KMPS when they bought Young Country. She was named operations manager while Mark Richards was PD at KMPS. I think he felt pushed out when she and the consultants were given authority to program KMPS. What was left for him to do? I agree she's dead weight! If there's anything she's good at it's how to jump on a bandwagon and go along for the ride.

Okay...

KMPS bought Young Country in order to eliminate a competitor! It worked then...it won't work now. Still think we'd better wait for "act 2"...don't think we've seen nothin' yet!

KMPS sounds old- morning. noon and night! Hiring Ichabod's wife as a producer is desperate, unless she is the only one who can communicate with him.

As for Lia, she is definately "riding the wave". You go girl!!

KMPS fulfilled the needs of the core country listener in Seattle for a couple of decades. It'll continue to do that, I'm sure! The biggest mistake KMPS can do is forget who brought them to the dance--the core country listener who's made up of people who love KMPS and the way it sounds. It's like Shania said: "You gotta dance with the one who brought you." When you're certain the "dance" has changed, then change the "tune" and get in step...then lead the way to whatever's next.

Ichabod is a personality Seattle has loved for over 3-decades. If you seriously think people are going to throw him over for the first new thing that somes along--you might be surprised. Same for the other KMPS personalities.

KMPS has been acting like they have a format competitor all along--even though they haven't. They continue to do the research and respond to it...not an upstart radio station that could well have already had its day in the sunshine.

John, these would be great points, if they were based in fact. The simple truth is, the KMPS ship has sailed.

  • Trends show Ick is dying on the vine.
  • KMPS is fat and lazy in presentation and promotion.
  • The country core that loved KMPS is like a person who loved vanilla ice cream from DQ. Then BOOM, a Ben and Jerry's store showed up and those vanilla lovers discovered Cherry Garcia and Chunky Monkey. Plain old vanilla will never be the same.

What else can I say?

I can't disagree with your points, they are all well-taken. Frankly, I've never understood WHY the KMPS presentation worked...I just assumed that I'd been away from SEA for so many years that the country lifegroup was just different than what I remembered. Aparently not!

One thing I've always known though, is that KMPS is a well-researched station. Arbitron does monthlies that can be deceiving (Trends) and quarterlies that we all have to live with. A well-researched radio station happens all the time with weekly preceptuals, music callout, etc. I think you can expect KMPS to respond to it's research, not Arbitron. Having said that, one can assume that there are now significant changes in the tastes of the country lifegroup and that a response must be forthcoming.

The Wolf is a national "brand" that is pretty much "plug n' play" in many markets across the US and is being used by several of the big broadcast groups, including CBS Radio (KMPS' owners) in Denver and a few other cities.

As I said, I don't disagree with ANY of your points...I do, however, think those who've counted KMPS out as a "thing of the past" are going to be shocked when "act 2" begins. We'll see...

Thanks for your thoughtful and respectful reply to my posting. --j

John, if "act 2" begins with a new PD, then there is hope for KMPS. Brenner is OUT OF TOUCH, so out of touch that she'll never even see this so I don't have to fear that I'll hurt her oblivious feelings.

They have some strong core talent and Ichabod - though a bumbling self-inflated idiot in my opinion - still has some interest among the older listeners. His wife might be able to communicate with him, the problem is that neither of them communicate with a younger audience.

I think Act 2 has already begun. Did you see today's Trends? KMPS is up to a 4.6 and The Wolf is down to a 3.3. KMPS returns to #2 12+ while KWWF drops to #8. Somebody once told me--I think I was Pat O'Day--that one "shouldn't believe anything in ARB until you see it twice."

The battle for Seattle's Country Fans is nowhere close to being "over".
