KMYZ flipping to CHR?

My mom was a "victim" of the Birthday Wake Up Call in '93 or so. I still have that on tape somewhere.

I suck with HTML, etc., but I too would love to see a place to have a tribute to the Z. Give me a buzz sometime @ [email protected]. Maybe we could put something together. That would be just too cool!

I'll see what I can do with a website over the holiday. Still can't find my tapes, but I do know that most of what I have was recorded in October '92 or '93. I know this, because I remember one of Wavy Davy's great ID's: "Puttin' the Oom-pah-pah in Oktoberfest...Hot Rockin' Z104.5!"

I have no clue where Banana Bradley is today. Mel Myers is still doing mornings at Classic Rock/KJSR Star 103.3 in Tulsa. I believe Wavy Davy is still doing nights at Star 103.3, and I've heard Elvis Polo on Saturday mornings on Talk Radio KFAQ. I believe former Z-104.5 evening jock Hondo is now deceased.

Who else?

Oh yeah, Randy Young works for Shamrock, doing imaging for Z-104.5 and afternoons on KTSO.

I thought Mel was let go awhile back from Star 103. He should be on the air somewhere.
 
Yeah, Mel and Cox parted ways earlier this year or late last year sometime, I believe.

I haven't heard ANYTHING about what he's doing. I'd be curious to know.

I hear he's simply expanded his hobby of photography. Not sure if anyone has offered him a gig, or even if he's interested in one.

Yes. Hondo passed away about 10 years ago. He went to Kansas City from Tulsa and, later, to Phoenix. I heard him in Kansas City when I lived there in '98, and I gave him a call. He was rather surprised to hear from a former KMYZ listener.
 
I think, sadly, that he's pretty well had it with corporate radio. That's not to say that NOBODY could woo him back, but at last report he wasn't actively looking. I think he's pretty fed up with the voicetracking, the liner cards, and the office politics... although that may be putting words in his mouth.

I know he's worked on his photography some, but I think his main income source right now is his production company: jingles, commercial voiceovers, songs for movie / TV, etc.

It's a crying shame he's not on the air somewhere... it's a CRIME that nobody's using his extensive successful programming experience to put their station on top.

The two years early in my career that I spent working under Mel, he taught me more than I've learned from all of the other stations I've worked for... no offense, previous employers!

Many PDs are just swamped with way too much on their plate these days to dream of airchecking an overnight part-timer EVERY WEEK, but Mel did it back then, and showed me a million small & big ways to improve my on-air sound. I've seriously thought if I ever had the money, I'd like to hire him as a personal coach for me, to continue the "education" started so many years ago.

My "dream team" would have Mel & Dave Michaels in total control of a big FM signal with a promotional budget and any research tools they wanted to support them. I'm convince they'd kick tail and take names, whatever direction they decided to take the station.

At the very least, it would be great to hear Mel on 94.1. He seems like he'd been an excellent fit, and at least there he'd be with a company that allows their local programmers SOME freedom in making decisions. Paul does a heckova job with that signal, regardless of what the ratings may or may not reflect.

I think...and let me stress, this is just me thinking out loud...that some of the Shamrock higher-ups might be hesitant to bring Mel in. There's no disputing that he did an AMAZING job with KMYZ back in the early 90's, but the way he handled the 94.1 LMA then wasn't ideal. And him leaving mornings at 104.5 to do mornings at 94.1 didn't work as hoped. Maybe enough years have passed that any bad taste has left some people's mouths.

Let me stress that I'm not saying any of the above is Mel's fault at all...just thinking out loud.

I have a couple of airchecks from the late 80s/early 90s. I think one of the jocks was Jim "Hollywood" Harris? I would have to look at the exact dates. I would be glad to donate those if nobody else has them.

I remember Elvis Polo would do his Tulsa's Top 15 each night. Good times. Not only do I miss the original Z 104.5, but I miss the Rock/40 format as a whole. Too bad there aren't many of those stations around these days.

Rock/40 these days would be very awkward. Going from a Buckcherry song to a Taio Cruz song would be a very uncomfortable transition.

But I miss also miss the format. Hot Rockin' Z-104.5 and KOFM 104 were the stations of my youth, and they instilled in me a love for radio that continues to this day, even though radio today isn't anywhere close to the radio I fell in love with.
