"Funny you should ask at this time. The station transmits with 3.6 kw from a rooftop tower at Green & Leavenworth Streets in San Francisco. Just a few days ago, the FCC accepted an application to move the transmitter to the Sutro Tower and reduce power to 510 watts. In FM, it's all location, location, location!"
As I've stated before, I'm ignorant about the technical science of FM radio transmission, and I'm unclear as to how the 92.7 signal has changed over the last decade. But I was a fan of the old KJAZ on that frequency, and would listen at home and in the car often. Yes - the signal was somewhat spotty, and didn't come in at all in Marin County where I worked at the time. But in San Francisco, the northern Peninsula and the East Bay (west of the Caldecott, anyway), it came in just fine.
As far as FM reception in the car in those days (80s, 90s), I remember having the most problems with 93.3 and 105.3, which both had more frequent static and signal drop-out (if that's the correct term), than 92.7 did.
