Knoxville Trends

Jun-Jul-Aug is here. How do our favorite news/talk stations look?

12+ trends are on this site, so no use repeating them, but I will attempt to extrapolate using the same method I did last month on post#1 of this thread.

Again, this is just more or less an educated guess and I'm assuming a number of variables, such as my numbers last month were correct, and the June numbers matched the Spring book (since the switch didn't happen until July, this is a reasonable assumption.)

Ok ready?

For August I have WNOX at 4.1 and WOKI at 8.1

Quite a turnaround. August was the first full month of programming for both. I think WNOX is sounding better than it did in the beginning, but WOKI still has the big name personalities in all dayparts. ote]

Had to re-do this in order to credit Marino for his/her post.

My question remains, isn't 4.1 a fairly monstrous first-month number for a launch?

So what you're saying is that WNOX climbed from a 0.0 in late July to a 4.1 in August? And WOKI went from a 8.3 to a 4.8?

Hmmm not sure where you're getting those numbers. My estimates for July-August were WNOX down from 4.7 to 4.1 and WOKI up from 2.4 to 8.1.

To answer Big Bopper's question, I've certainly seen stranger things. Don't forget, for new stations, there's always a "honeymoon" period. People will check out a new station to see what it's like. For example, I guarantee every one of us on this board sampled WNOX last month. Now the question is, how many are still listening?

Your numbers don't jibe with the actual trends or the fact that one of those stations (WNOX) had no actual programming for almost an entire month. There are not 12 points available to news/talk in Knoxville. Never has been, never will be.

Since WNOX had no actual programming it's pretty safe to say they had no actual listeners, therefore a 0.0 share. WOKI however had an 8.3 in the Spring book, and a 3.4 in the M/J/J trend. They shook out in the J/J/A trend with a 4.8 which is an increase of 1.4.

Meanwhile WNOX has climbed from no listeners to a 5.6.

And, is it just me or are their more "news/talk" listeners in the market now? WNOX was pulling an 8.3 all by themselves in the Spring book and now the combined WNOX/WOKI numbers total 10.4.

Reality check: June - July - August trends

WNOX 8.0 - 6.1 - 2.7
WOKI 4.0 - 2.9 - 7.5

Saw a Citadel ratings 'guidebook' today. Looks like they're trying to claim the 100kw news/talk numbers. Spent several pages referring to 100.3 using words like Caveat emptor and intellectual property. They did a pretty nice job of laying it out so you can't see WIVK's continued slide. They must've hired one of Mike Ragsdale's bean counters to put it together.

Arbitron may be the bible of the industry, but too many people still try to make that bible say what they want it to say. If the group with the #1 station has to spread it thick and smelly, I wonder what kind of crap the rest of the market is saying.

Did you come up with those numbers using an inflatable dart board?

Where have you been? This kind of *stuff* has gone on in radio salesrooms since day one of ratings. Citadel Knoxville just didn't invent it over the summer. Every station/cluster develops its own spin on the ratings for sales purposes.

By the way, I noticed that some of the confusion related to ratings numbers in this thread has to do with mixing numbers from the 12+ (publicly available) results and the 25-54 results. For the sake of clarity among some, it might be a good idea to tag numbers with the source of the results.

Where have I been? I've been working the afternoon greeter shift at the Oliver Springs WalMart. I get a pay raise at age 70 when Social Security kicks in fully. Also, everything I say is a lie. Everything. I'm lying to you right now.

When the formerly dominant #1 station has to use misdirection, it discredits itself. When a formerly dominant group spends several pages talking about the other guy, it exposes its fear. A novice advertiser will be impressed with stuff like this because they think it's educational. An experienced advertiser knows where to sniff.

That's a lie, too. The sales piece is awesome and I'm sure it's going to make you bajillions of dollars by its pure number-crunching brilliance. And your sales babes will be able to present it logically and flawlessly at all times.

Did corporate tell you guys what to print or is the numbers cruncher afraid for his job?

Never wrestle with a pig. You'll get all muddy. And the pig will have a good time.

Reality check: June - July - August trends

WNOX 8.0 - 6.1 - 2.7
WOKI 4.0 - 2.9 - 7.5

12+ only and the dartboard is called Arbitron. It's always been a dartboard.

The only problem with your numbers is that the 98.7 signal can't reach 7.5 of the 12+ metro.

This post is getting framed:

Wild had a 7.1 12+ on that signal... so it's been done before.

Let's re-read the original post.

Anyone in the Citadel building have a calculator? Please let Primer borrow it.

So you're saying a signal that can TREND at 7.1 can't hit a 7.5 in a single MONTH?

While I'm using the calculator... you may want to line up to be fed with a spoon you f#*king retard.

I'm saying that 98.7's signal is unable to reach a 7.5 share of the listening audience.

Do you even know the difference between a share and a rating point?

7.1 is a looooooong way from 7.5.

Spoon feed me, baby. I like it easy.

We need more on both sides of this issue to come off the porch. Then we can invite Jerry Springer.

And, jetfli, no matter what you may have been told, the retired old-timers at Old Kingston pike never passed gas in your chair or picked our noses and wiped them under your desk. Or the arms of your guest chairs, for that matter.

And nobody there late at night ever found a way into your office to look at internet porn. Not at all. Even with a window with a view of anyone coming to the station where they'd never be caught.

When they could afford it, Citadel changed out your office chair every few years didn't they?

Ok, back to topic: When you dominate, you don't need to mislead. And trends may show who's being sampled, but it'll take a long time before a listening pattern emerges from these changes.

Also, since cats are self-cleaning, jetfli probably never smelled pee after a party at his place.

Radio is still the dominant thee-AAY-ter of the mind.

Not a lot of posts, but there's been a HitloadTM of page views this weekend, huh?
