KO93 Returns To Modesto On 93.1 (Sort Of...)

Re: The Whereabouts of Former KWG Employees

I can take a whack at a few of these!

Matt Dillon, alive and well.

Lance Ballance went to KOST in L.A. and was there for EVER. He just recently went to another station in L.A.

Pat Kelley was working at Modesto's Sunny 102 for what seemed like EVER. Haven't heard him for a while, but I haven't tuned in.

Tim Anthony is working at KRTY in the East Bay. Just talked to him a little over a month ago. All is well.

Ed Garcia bounced around a bit, and after his last firing from KSTN went East. Last I heard he was playing with talk radio, doing his far left schtick. He hangs out here on these boards as user- kestrel.

Rodney Bond. Hmmm.. How can you even call that guy a DJ? He had a horrible speech impediment and was really just keeping the chair warm. First opportunity, he was gone, replaced with someone who could form a sentence.

Tim Robinson was a super ncie guy! When he got canned, it was sad. He worked for a Salvation Army store for a while last I heard.

Bud Kress in still in Sacramento and last I heard was pulling weekends at Y92. His username was something like bud1230 or something along those lines.

Candy Stevens was working at Modesto's KATM as 'Candy West' until earlier this year. Don't know where she is now.

Chrys Frazier was at KJOY along with Dave Bowling and Mike McKnight, but haven't heard her in a while. She always had a weird sounding 'accent' to her delivery. She pronounced the 'S' sound as 'SHhh'. I thought after all these years, some PD would have broken that habbit of hers.

Jenny West is a tattle-tail. She did her best to get me fired in 1991. It worked. She told on me for cueing a CD on the (then) new Denon CD cart player. I cued past some crud to get to the meat of the intro to back-time to the network. She walked in on a weekend and heard the CD 'chirping' in the cue speaker as I cued. She screamed at me that I was breaking the new CD player, I told her 'If it will break it, why do they put the cue buttons right on the front panel then?'. She screamed to Bill that I was abusing equipment and that was all it took. Unreal! Bee-awtch.

Then, there's Bill Jeffries. Man, that guy taught me a lot. I love him for it. However, it wasn't until I went to the bay area and worked for a REAL PD that I learned what an idiot Bill was. Maybe it was my age, but if Bill hit me today like he did then, I would have owned the station. I understand he needed to get through to me, but to actually STRIKE a jock?

I also remember 'Big Al Bondi' and Paul Shinn and 'Christine' and who could forget Dirk Kooyman.

Last I heard, Big Al was managing a Radio Shack! What an awesome guy.

I have no clue what happened to Christine. I forget her last name, but it was something with a latin sound. Sanchez maybe? I drew her name for the Christmas party gift exchange. She had just moved into a new home in the country and was accepting house type things. I gave her live chickens! She LOVED them!

Working at KWG/B101 was the most fun I ever had in radio. Every radio job I had after was just 'chasing that high' so to speak. No radio station was ever as fun. Now, the KWG/B101 radio station as a whole doesn't even exist anymore. I miss it VERY much.

I quit 3 times and got fired twice. I only took they keys off my keyring once. Once, I was unemployed for a whole weekend, and asked back on Monday. That was the longest time I was ever gone. When I left for the bay area in the early 90's, I was only going there looking for a station like KWG/B101. I worked in the bay for 7 years, making KILLER money, but not having fun. Not like the fun I had at KWG/B101.

Nope, not Matt or Dirk. I thought my 'real name' was in my profile. Just looked, its not. PM me and I will discuss.

BTW, Dirk Kooyman is a stellar human being. Ultra good guy. Matt Foor was working as a P.R. guy for the Weberstown Mall in Stockton last time we talked.
Hi Tube Shortwave, When I have a chance, I'll PM you later. I have a lot of KWG memories, I remember when they used to be on Center Street, but i also remember when they were on Stratford Circle near Dave wong's on Pershing before that. KWG was Easy Listening/MOR until 1981 when they switched to DELTA COUNTRY 1230. they remained Country until 1982 when they switched to OLDIES (guessing it was on June 25, 1982). They remained OLDIES until around July of 1996 then they switched to SPANISH AC (LA BONITA).SILVERADO BROADCASTING really screwed up a legendary radio station. Hard to think of them as a CATHOLIC RADIO STATION today (yes I do know KWG was briefly owned by SUSAN CARSON from 1997-99). During the oldies era, I remember DJ's such as KEVIN MANNA (The original Morning Man before being replaced by BILL JEFFRIES), MATT FOOR, DIRK KOOYMAN, CANDY STEVENS, JENNY WEST, MAGIC MIKE DAVIS, ROBERT BERTANI, CHRYS FRAISER, LEE PITT, DAVE BOWLING and many others that escape my mind at the moment. I vividly remember the stunt that BILL JEFFRIES did back around either 1988 or 1989 where he supposedly lost a bet with CANDY STEVENS and had to broadcast in the nude. Boy those are cherished memories!!! ;D

Here are some more names:

MATT DILLON, PAT KELLEY, TIM ANTHONY, LANCE BALANCE, ED GARCIA, RODNEY BOND, TIM ROBINSON, BUD KRESS and some others. They were all there when the stations moved to Pacific Avenue.

Where are a lot of the old KWG jocks? No idea where most of them are now. Where is Bill?
Let's see.. LANCE BALLANCE went to work at a radio station in Los Angeles. Don't know if he is still there? I think PAT KELLEY is working at Citadel's KESP-970 Modesto on a Golf Talk Show? Last I heard, BILL JEFFRIES is in Tucson Arizona. Out of the radio business of course. I believe CANDY STEVENS is in Oregon. Is she still in the business? ROBERT BERTANI got in the culinary arts business and is out of radio. JENNY WEST went south to Merced to cohost a morning oldies show at KABX-97.5. Is she still there? I know CHRYS FRASIER worked briefly at KJOY-99.3 doing the evening show. MATT FOOR worked at Weberstown Mall. KWG C.E. ALAN GRAFT passed away some time ago. How about the others?

Pat Kelley At KESP-970 Modesto!

I also checked out the KESP website and Pat is doing a Saturday Morning Show called THE GOLF GUYS from 7:AM-9:AM. Now Pat is a local legend working at stations like KJOY-1280 when it was a Top 40 Powerhouse in the 1970's as well as KWG-1230, KTRB-860, KJSN-102.3 and now KESP-970. He needs to write a book! I'd read it!

Whatever Became Of Former KWGer BLAS VALLEJO?

And there was a very nice guy by the name of BLAS VALLEJO. He was really into Oldies. He had a Sunday Night Oldies Show first on KHOP-104.1 Modesto called "BLAS VALLEJO'S GOLDEN GRAFFITI" from 6:pM-Midnight. It competed with an identical sounding Sunday Night Oldies Show at KOSO-93.1 which had host MIKE LEWIS. Blas Vallejo was at KHOP from 1980-83 then jumped ship to KWG-1230 in 1983 still doing the Sunday Night Oldies Show during the same time period. He left in 1985. Haven't heard from him since.

"Sunday Night Oldies Show at KOSO-93.1"-- I remember a pizza place as an advertiser on this show- the name of which was, so and so's "stuffaria". Right around 79.

Mike Lewis, who was also a very nice guy, had been doing his show on KOSO since '78 or '79 - occasionally I had to board op after my weekend shift. The station was a piece of crap at the time and didn't have much ratings, but Sunday nights Mike did alright, so KHOP, being a bigger station at the time, thought they could take Mike's audience and brought in Blas. He never did beat Mike.

Actually the name of the place was - and I'm not sure if I'm spelling it right - Laval's Stuffery. Later, due to legal reasons, Mike changed the name to just "The Stuffery".

As I mentioned before, Mike was a very nice man....not much broadcast "personality", but he really knew his 50's music. I think his audience really liked his extremely "average Joe" sound and the way he related his knowledge. As I remember, he and Blas had actually been friends, but when Blas started against him at KHOP, it caused friction.

Mike loved 50's music, but was an entrepeniur who owned and operated his sandwich shop. He obviously gave it his all. As I think back on those evenings board oping for Mike, I can't help but think of the memeory that initially pops in my mind...is that after working all day in a hot sandwich shop, Mike would come out to the station (in a house at Crows Landing and Carpenter Rd) to do his show and I'd have to slyly open windows and turn on the air conditioner to keep fresh air flowing through the building so I didn't die. Loved Mike, but I wished we had a shower at the station so he could freshen up for his shift.

Out of the west comes a ''voice '' from the past -- I'm the ''mundane '' voice of the # 1 show on Sunday nights at KOSO for 5 straight years ! I being Mike Lewis -- former owner of the Stuffery restaurants . Good to see someone remembers my name other than the IRS . Who could ever forget '' We just want to be YOUR radio station "

From 1979 until about 1998, KOSO-93.1 was known as "KO93" until it became "B-93". Well KO93 has returned, but only if you have an HD Radio. On KOSO's HD-2, The Classic Hits format is known as "KO93". However if anyone from the area knows, The Original KO93 started out as Top 40 in 1979, eventually evolved into CHR then became Adult Contemporary (The Light Rock Variety)around 1988. In 1997, they switched formats to "Hot AC" then became B-93 in 1998. The music played on its HD-2 really isn't what the Original KO93 was, but it is nice to hear the KO93 name again. Listening to them now online.

Thank's Hunter for the info! As I can now recall, I believe the show was called LAVAL'S OLDIES. Makes sense, since his restaurant was called LAVAL'S STUFFERY.

I am almost sure, Mike's oldies show started around September of 1979. Mike would probably can help with the timeline, but I believe LAVAL'S OLDIES replaced the syndicated THE DR. DEMENTO SHOW that aired from 7:pM-9:pM on Sunday Nights. Eventually, the show expanded from 2 hours to I believe 6 hours. And I agree with you Hunter that Mike did a better show than Blas. Blas only lasted at KHOP for about 3 years before going to KWG. Pappas replaced Blas Vallejo's show on KHOP with the syndicated WOLFMAN JACK SHOW and still later with the syndicated DICK CLARK'S ROCK, ROLL, AND REMEMBER before new owner, FULLER JEFFREY eliminated Sunday Night Oldies entirely by 1987.

Welcome to Radio-Info Mike!!! great to know you are still alive!!! ;D Perhaps you can give us a timeline on your association with KOSO aka KO93 and the LAVAL'S OLDIES SHOW. I believe it started in September of 1979, replacing the syndicated DR. DEMENTO SHOW? And your show lasted, I think until 1991? I can almost guarantee you that it was the popularity of your Sunday Night Show that inspired KWG-1230 to go All Oldies in 1982 (as well as for KHOP to start a competing show with Blas Vallejo).

Mike, hi it's Mark. (I use "Hunter" to avoid the IRS). And as I remember, the "aroma" varied...probably depending on the special of the day. I do remember that you were on a very tight schedule to get the store closed and make the drive out to the studio before your show started. Either way, I apologize and didn't mean to offend you...just adding some humor to some very fond memories from the early days of my career.

I believe Walter Koschnitzke, who was the first programmer when the station switched from MOR, brought you in to do the oldies. Later, Rob Sherwood, I think, expanded your show and dropped Dr. Demento. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Rob had high regard for the dedicated audience you created....and even had Gary DeMaroney doing Oldies during the 12 noon lunch for awhile. At the time, oldies was becomming very popular, and the appeal of your show solidified that in the valley at the time. Not only did KWG change, but KABX wisely went on the air with Oldies and has had a great run.

I think you are right about Walter changing the format from MOR to Top 40 as well as branding KOSO as KO93. For some reason, I think Mike Lewis's LAVAL'S OLDIES SHOW replaced the syndicated DR. DEMENTO SHOW rather than expand into that slot. I know that during the course of the show, it did expand its hours. But I thought Mike Lewis initially did a 2 hour show on Sunday Nights from 7:pM-9:pM (replacing Dr. Demento), then expanded later. And I keep thinking it all happened around September of 1979? (Again, Mike can correct me?) As for KSBX-97.5 Merced, It didn't go on the air as Oldies, They were originally an Easy Listening Station as KMYT but switched its calls and format to Oldies in 1989. Also Modesto had an All Oldies Station, KOOK-970 (1988-92), however they had Oldies via Satellite (SMN?) and wasn't as good as KWG.

Good memory on KOOK. I forgot about that one. Also thought KABX was earlier, but perhaps not. As far as Walt's contribution to the station, he changed the format from MOR to a very soft AC...not Top 40. When I first started there, I was doing middays and while we did play Devil Woman by Cliff Richards, mostly there was Streisand, Diamond, Bobby Vinton, etc.

K093 came into being after the sale to Spacecom and Bill Johnson was GM. Rob was PD and doing mornings with me as newsman and cohost.

Good morning all -- here's a little update from the one Rob Sherwood called " The doctor of discs " -- I actually started my show in 1978 from 7-8 pm on monday' then the GM asked me to go to Sundays from 7 - 9pm ( hope this is acturate ). The ratings were good -- and I worked for ads and trades -- so they made my show 6-12mid . I had a great time from -- these dates are guesses -- until 1985 or so , when I had moved to Concord, Ca .I do miss my old -- now VERY old -- friends . I never was angry with Blas Vallejo -- and recently spoke with him on the telephone . I'll be back in Modesto as a guest at an oldies affair -- sounds ominous ! - next Father's Day -- You can now find me at V Sattui Winery in St Helena , Ca full time -- no more Stuffery / bbq beef / or Modesto Fog ! !
