Yeah that's what research and all you consultant types have been screaming decade after decade. Fact is most times a station goes jockless up against a personality driven station the jockless station loses. same with morning shows. More music mornings shows almost never work. BTW...i said COMPELLING jocks not obnoxious jocks.
Most formats do not work with no talent, and most do not work voice tracked. But there are exceptions, and in those cases the absence of jocks is a critical and valueable part of the format. The error is to do a "cheap" format where jocks are dispensed with to save money or because the PD can't deal with talent.
But there is a significant segment that rejects all jocks and just wants to hear music... a group that is burnt out on DJs and the "patter" that they think is banal and mindless. It is not a huge segment, but one that can not be served with any personality or jock-based approach. It is not about good or bad jocks... it´s about a dislike for all jocks.
Similarly, in different situations, a station may have a morning show that is not a show as much as a bit more open approach to the format. The #1 station in LA has a top-rated morning show where they play only one song per hour less in mornings than in mid-days. Yes, there is a bit more in the way of service elements and such, but a full-fledged morning show it is not. And it works.
If all staitons had the same jock and morning aproach, it would sure be boring.
