No idea. Don't bother searching for info by call letters, since
the only paper trail is accessible by "DKOFY," and that leads to a
deadend. It's like the station never existed.

Considering Russell's current financial and legal woes, what's next,
KZEY?

DOWN GOES RUSSELL!!! DOWN GOES RUSSELL!!! His corrupted little kingdom is showing a decline of a once powerful (cough-cough) station!!! Looks like the fire and brimstone of his company is about to be set ablaze! Oh, I'm loving this right now!!

BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HAAAAAA!

But seriously......anyone want to take on the 10,000 watt station and make it even better?

Just a note. When Sunburst was acquiring KYKX/KFRO-AM/KFRO-FM, at least some initial thought was given to acquiring the 1060 frequncy and putting its 10KW signal into the mix and dumping KFRO-AM's 1KW signal. It seemed to be a good idea with them on Monday but not so good an idea on Tuesday.

I do! If possible, I'd like to call a meeting one weekend...in the Tyler-Longview area...and seriously discuss our group purchasing...and completely rebuilding...KWRD and KOFY and turn them into the LOCAL powerhouses they could be. If anyone is interested in putting a group together, or at least talking about putting one together, please E-mail me. Maybe if we put our heads together, we can come up with a plan. I can be reached at: [email protected]

I look forward to hearing from you!

The problem with this station is it is a daytime only license. Many owners have tried to change that, with no luck. And, I don't think it has broadcast at 10,000 watts in awhile. Everytime I have tuned it in over the past 10 years or so, the signal has been quite weak.

I think I'd rather have KFRO-AM and try to file for a power upgrade.

I wished I could say I feel sorry for Russell, but it just goes to show you can only crap on people for so long, before it comes back to get you, too. You gotta love karma.
______________

When I worked there when it was KHYM in Gilmer (1989) it had an 50's-early 60's vintage RCA transmitter that was a monster. When it worked right, it could go from Paris to Nacodoches. It even got reception reports from florida during the summer. Ate expensive tubes on a regular basis, and when it got hot during the summer it always popped the breaker. No way to get nightime coverage because we had to protect WLNO (formerly WNOE) in New Orleans.

Then when they moved the station to Kilgore in 1993-4 (the tower site is about a mile north of the Country Tavern off Highway 31) they bought ANOTHER RCA 10K of the same vintage with the same problems. They had a cheap Marti compressor/limiter for processing. Around 1996 they got a newer 70's vintage transmitter but its never been set up right. Audio's off a phoneline and the tower is shorter (around 200 ft) than the Gilmer site.

I wonder if you could get a 5-10 kw upgrade for KFRO-AM? Would be nice if Access one would shell out for a new transmitter, towers etc.

The strange thing is that KOFY's still on the air with mexican programing. I'm listening to it right now, but for how long? This is bizzare, could the station moving to a new frequency? new town?

Could not access the links for some reason.

Also, the new tower near Kilgore, is kind of sitting at the bottom of a hill, in amongst a bunch of trees. I went out to the site, when I worked for them in the mid '90's. The calls had just changed from KHYM to KBNB (before it was KOFY). I thought it was a stupid move. There is not much of a difference between Kilgore and Gilmer with a 10K AM station. You could still pick it up in both Tyler and Longview.
______________

That is a possibility. Note that these are both just applications at this point. A Construction Permit hasn't been granted. Perhaps taking KOFY off the air would clear the boards to get two new stations on the air, but my gut feeling is there is enough separation for all three stations to coexist.

I didn't check the application date, but I'll bet these are leftovers from the last AM filing window that opened up a little over three years ago. There was also an application during that same window for a 250 watt daytimer in Longview. I believe a CP was issued, but it was never built. I understand that the CP has been cancelled. Once a CP (or license for that matter) lapses, I believe you have to wait until the next filing window to make an application for it. I don't think you can get the Commission to just re-issue it in a different name.

Some really good (and expensive)Washington communications attorneys might have a different opinion.

Re: Hmmmm......

I suspect we may see that. I check the Daily Digest every day to see what is going on in the East Texas area that might have a direct effect on our station. As you know, all Texas radio stations were up for license renewal this August. You had to file the renewal this spring. It was not that hard to do, and there was plenty of time to do it.

I have to admit I was not keeping score, but this summer I saw renewals posted for almost every local station, except KZEY, KWRD and KOFY.

I may have missed something, and until yesterday's shocker, I thought I had. Now I'm not so sure. Is it possible that they "forgot" to renew? I know that mistakes do happen, but any licensed broadcaster who did not know it was time to renew would have to live in a cave. The FCC notifies you by mail, posts it all over the Internet, sends you emails, etc. Further, TAB had tons of mailings, seminars and other information about the process. If you didn't see that, it was mentioned in some major trade publications. Failing that, your current license says (on the front page): "This License expires 3:00 a.m. local time, August 01, 2005."

I think I'd be more likely to miss my wife's birthday or our anniversary, than miss a renewal date. In 33+ years of marriage, I've also learned not to miss those, either.

Considering the fact that AM1060 is still on the air, I'm lead to think a.)Can you read your mail?; b.)Do you care?

Sad state of affairs. There's somebody around here that would've/could've taken those stations to higher places than they were before.

The Sunburst people looked at the daytime restriction first of all but still mulled over 1060 for yet a little while longer. Even with the possibility of a power upgrade for KFRO-AM, Borders and his folks for some reason just didn't care for KFRO-AM. The directional night pattern and some other considerations seemed to sully their outlook on KFRO-AM.

Do a search just for Tyler TX - leave the frequency empty

Heres a picture I took of the KOFY site last year taken near sundown on a rainy day: http://tinypic.com/dlhze9.jpg

One story I heard about why the station moved, was a Gilmer bank forclosed on the owners of KHYM and sold all the equipment off - so when the new owner (Hightower) in 1993-4 got the licence they didnt have a radio station, just a licence.

So they thought it would be better and more convienent to move the studios into downtown Kilgore since its close to where most of the East Texas radio audiance is, with the tower placed between Tyler-Longview for a stronger signal in both cities.

I thought it was a mistake too - even with a folded dipole antenna it doesnt cover as much ground as the old Gilmer site did. It was up on a hill about 4 miles east of Gilmer (next door to a cementary!) It could have been also built for a FM licence..

Its really a shame - KOFY is now basically a pirate, and I bet the staff wont know they dont have a licence until the FCC knocks on the door and shuts them down for good. BTW where are KOFY's studios located now?

If I were a guessing man, they'd probably be in the same place as KZEY. Since leaving downtown Kilgore, which was a dump by the way, they've been several places. Most of them around Tyler.
______________

Now that's ridiculous. You don't file for renewal, your license
expires and you keep on going like everything's fine. It reminds
me of what happened with KFCC (once known as KIOX) in Bay City.
The owner picked up the station and moved it to suburban Houston
without approval then lied about the details. They ordered him back
to Bay City and he fought it, again using questionable tactics.
The license revocation proceedings went on for years, and the owner
took every opportunity to fight the FCC. He and Russell sound pretty
similar.
